Das Interesse für die Anwendung der Valenztheorie auf die deutsche Sprachgeschichte besteht seit etwa fünfzig Jahren. Hierdurch lassen sich Grundlagen für ein besseres Verständnis der historischen deutschen Texte schaffen: Wenn die historischen Texte der Valenzanalyse unterzogen werden, fördert Die Beobachtung der semantischen und morphosyntaktischen Umgebung von Verben Erkenntnisse zutage, die in lexikalische Verzeichnisse Eingang finden. Damit stehen syntaktisch untersuchte Verben aller Sprachperioden bereit und bieten sich zum historischen Vergleich an. Aus diesem spezifischen Blickwinkel wird der Sprachwandel erfasst und erklärt. Diese Einführung gibt einen Überblick über die Forschungsaktivitäten im Bereich der deutschen Sprachgeschichte, die auf valenztheoretischer Grundlage ausgeübt werden, z.B. in den Bereichen Syntax, Phraseologie, lexikalische Semantik und Lexikografie.

In recent years, research on valency has led to important insights into the nature of language. Some of these findings are published in this volume for the first time with up-to-date accounts of language description and new reflections on language, above all for English and German. The volume also presents examples of contrastive analysis, which are of use for all those who deal professionally with these two languages. Furthermore, the articles in the psycholinguistic and computational linguistics section demonstrate the applicability and value of valency theory for these approaches and shed light on a fruitful cooperation between theoretical and descriptive linguistics and applied disciplines. The papers cover the following aspects of valency analysis: (i) theoretical aspects of the valency approach in relation to related theories of complementation (dependency syntax, FrameNet, case roles), (ii) descriptive aspects of valency and complementation, (iii) valency as a concept for the description of cognitive processes in syntactic processing, (iv) contrastive aspects of valency, above all for English and German, and (v) possible computational applications of the valency concept in fields such as automatic syntactic recognition or language processing. The volume combines papers of representatives from different linguistic schools on the topic of complementation. One of the aims is to show how concepts developed for the analysis of one language, in the case of valency often German, can be applied to other languages such as English.

Over the past decade and a half, Germany has experienced a period of political and cultural turbulence which many have attributed to the combined challenges of unification and globalisation. In response to growing exposure to global markets, politics and migration debates about identity have increasingly been renationalised. At the same time, there has been a notable reappraisal in Germany (and in German Studies) of the regional and global as spaces for the construction of identity. This volume sets out to explore these complex and at times contradictory trends, focusing in particular on developments in Germany since the 1970s, although chapters treating earlier periods are also included. The volume brings together British, Irish, German, Canadian and American scholars working in the field, and resulted from a conference organised by Women in German Studies at the University of Bath. The first section is primarily concerned with the specifically German concept of locality known as Heimat and its changing relationship with the global. Included are explorations of the writings of Kafka, Bachmann, Johnson, Sell, Wolf, Brinkmann and Jelinek amongst others as well as films by Schlöndorff and Steyerl. The second section focuses on the impact of the global on institutions and rituals such as commemoration, memorialisation, and architecture, which have traditionally been influential in shaping national self-images. Overall, this volume concludes that the nature of the relationship to the local has fundamentally changed under the impact of globalisation.

Im zweiten Abschnitt werden in ausführlicher Weise Vorbetrachtungen zur anstehenden Valenzanalyse angestellt, wobei neben allgemeinen Fragen der historischen Valenzforschung und ihrer Methodik auch das Korpus besprochen wird. In diesem Abschnitt werden dann auch sowohl die Modalverben des Mittelhochdeutschen und des Gegenwartsdeutschen allgemein wie auch das Untersuchungsobjektdürfenbeider Sprachstufen speziell erörtert. Die Valenzanalyse ist dem dritten Kapitel zugeordnet. Schließlich hält das Fazit das Ergebnis der Valenzanalyse bereit und fasst überdies die in der Arbeit aufgeworfenen Fragestellungen und ihre mögliche Antworten zusammen.
