The History and Traditions of the Isle of Skye is a rare insight into the history of Scotland's most magical isles. Written by historian Alexander Cameron about his native island this volume offers a front row seat to the poetry, drama and turmoil of Skye and the surrounding isles' history. Cameron takes a voyage through time from the original Neolithic inhabitants and the profound markers they left on the landscape to the state of the region in the 19th Century. The ancient inhabitants and their struggles with Norsemen and the elements are documented within this book but nearer history is far from neglected. Whilst the isles around and including Skye are remote, this has not kept them from being powerful playing pieces, used in games between the great leaders of Clans and English houses. Raids, royal entreaties and questionable romance have touched these islands and this book renders those events tangible for the reader through the judicious use of traditional poetry and legend highlighted alongside historical detail. Cameron starts from the Poems of Ossian in the third century and discusses all the major events that touched the island up until the 1800s. It is a twisting tale worthy of any drama, from the druids and Danes to the daring rescue of Bonnie Prince Charlie by Flora MacDonald, and other less famous but equally fascinating episodes. The work is written in a period style, and the modern reader will be drawn in by its engaging character and the accuracy with which the author expresses the human stories caught up in Skye's political winds. Of particular interest to genealogists, the final section of the book notes the names, families and brief biographies of a number of military men from Skye who had distinguished service records. Skye has been the home of brave people of all kinds for many generations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The History and Traditions of the Isle of Skye It is somewhat remarkable that though nearly a century has elapsed since the writing of a history of the Isle of Skye was proposed by no less literary authority than Dr Samuel Johnson, who promised to revise the proposed work, no person has hitherto undertaken the task. This circumstance, coupled with the frequently expressed desire for such a history, and the fact that many of the interesting traditions of the island were fast passing into oblivion, induced me to devote brief intervals of leisure to collecting historical notes and traditions delating to Skye, and arranging them in the piesent form, which is published at the solicitation of several friends, and as a tribute to my nativa island I only regret that the performance of the task I undertook, though laborious on account of the scattered and scanty sources of information, is not more worthy of the subject. It may be here stated that some of the earlier chapters of the volume were contributed by me about two years since to the columns of the Inverness Advertiser, and that since their publication in that newspaper they have been considerably altered and extended. In this book William Mackenzie records a world of local legend, folklore and superstition, and charts the changes he saw in his lifetime in agriculture, education, the Church and, of course, emigration. He recounts the history of the leading families of Skye and also the lives and experiences of the crofters, for whose rights he actively campaigned in the 1880s. Old Skye Tales is a unique and valuable record, written by a man of intelligence and sensitivity, whose life spanned both the traditional and the modern world. As well as containing a large amount of information of the geography of the island (particularly the north), there are also important sections on crofting, the Church, as well as local superstitions, sayings, second sight and even local characters of his time. An entertaining and witty book, Old Skye Tales is a marvellous resource for the historian, as well as a fascinating compendium for all those who love one of Scotland's most famous islands. It is one of the most important sources for the history of the island.
