In the summer of 1900, bands of peasant youths from the villages of north China streamed into Beijing to besiege the foreign legations, attracting the attention of the entire world. Joseph Esherick reconstructs the early history of the Boxers, challenging the traditional view that they grew from earlier anti-dynastic sects, and stressing instead the impact of social ecology and popular culture.

"Paul Cohen shows us again how a master historian works."--Timothy Brook, Professor of History, University of Oxford "An important work for understanding modern China's desire to shake off its 'century of shame.' It takes us to a deeper level of understanding China's sometimes fragile national psyche."--Ian Johnson, The Wall Street Journal "Like all of Cohen's work, this is a stunningly insightful analysis. It is, without exaggeration, a tour de force, opening up a new world for understanding Chinese political culture. The book is extraordinarily important."--Keith Schoppa, author of Blood Road: The Mystery of Shen Dingyi in Revolutionary China

Change or Die. What if you were given that choice? If you didn't, your time would end soon—a lot sooner than it had to. Could you change when change matters most? This is the question Alan Deutschman poses in Change or Die, which began as a sensational cover story by the same title for Fast Company. Deutschman concludes that although we all have the ability to change our behavior, we rarely ever do. From patients suffering from heart disease to repeat offenders in the criminal justice system to companies trapped in the mold of unsuccessful business practices, many of us could prevent ominous outcomes by simply changing our mindset. A powerful book with universal appeal, Change or Die deconstructs and debunks age-old myths about change and empowers us with three critical keys—relate, repeat, and reframe—to help us make important positive changes in our lives. Explaining breakthrough research and progressive ideas from a wide selection of leaders in medicine, science, and business (including Dr. Dean Ornish, Mimi Silbert of the Delancey Street Foundation, Bill Gates, Daniel Boulud, and many others), Deutschman demonstrates how anyone can achieve lasting, revolutionary changes that are positive, attainable, and absolutely vital.

The theme of this unique book is that the three main qualities necessary to achieve success are Judgment, Industry, and Health. A person may have two of these attributes and go far. But unless he has all three, he will not go all the way. The bitterest thing in life is failure. And the pity is that it is almost always the result of some avoidable error. There need be no such thing. Everyone can achieve his own success. The trouble in so many cases is that it takes time and opportunity for someone to discover in what direction his own natural bent lies. Hence the misfits. A young man may choose the wrong trade or profession, or he may be in the right business but the wrong department. The employer, nevertheless, votes him of little or no use. Much worse, the employee himself admits his failure. And by that very act of admission he has failed. Anyone who has strayed in youth to the wrong profession and failed may yet, however, prove himself an immense success in another field. To take a practical instance: salesmanship requires, above all, the spirit of optimism. Yet that same spirit in the finance department might ruin a firm. Thus the quality that brought failure in finance might mean sure success in the sales department. Hence no young man should be judged a failure on his initial try. He may yet succeed in another venture. Like all human affairs, success is partly a result of predestination and partly of free will. You cannot create genius, but you can either improve or destroy it. What are the qualities that make for your success? I repeat: They are three: Judgment, Industry, and Health. And the greatest of these is Judgment. This book will show you how to use these three keys to attain success in your own life.

In this memoir, Paul A. Cohen, one of the West’s preeminent historians of China, traces the development of his work from its inception in the early 1960s to the present, offering fresh perspectives that consistently challenge us to think more deeply about China and the historical craft in general. A memoir, of course, is itself a form of history. But for a historian, writing a memoir on one’s career is quite different from the creation of that career in the first place. This is what Cohen alludes to in the title A Path Twice Traveled. The title highlights the important disparity between the past as originally experienced and the past as later reconstructed, by which point both the historian and the world have undergone extensive change. This distinction, which conveys nicely the double meaning of the word history, is very much on Cohen’s mind throughout the book. He returns to it explicitly in the memoir’s final chapter, appropriately titled “Then and Now: The Two Histories.”

This sweeping survey is the first complete account of nearly 150 years of Protestant missions in Shanxi Province, China. Beginning with the arrival of the Protestant missionaries during the 1878 North China Famine and the fiery test of the 1900 Boxer Uprising and subsequent martyrdom of hundreds of Shanxi Christians, this important book brings together the historical accounts of the spread of Christianity in the province all the way up to the present. From the personal papers and contemporary records of the missionaries, Kaiser draws a vivid picture of the women and men who devoted their lives to advancing the cause of the gospel in Shanxi. He weaves the stories of bold local Christians like Pastor Hsi and such notable missionaries as Gladys Aylward, Timothy Richard, Hudson Taylor, and the Cambridge Seven into the broader tapestry of China missions, tracing the birth and development of a thriving and dynamic Shanxi church. Drawing on mission archives, academic studies, and firsthand knowledge, this fusion of scholarly inquiry with missionary biography aims to both inspire and inform, making the lessons of the missionary past available to a new generation of readers.
