A deep history of storytelling as a civic agency, recalibrating literature’s political role for the twenty-first century Why did short narrative forms like the novella, fable, and fairy tale suddenly emerge around 1800 as genres symptomatic of literature’s role in life and society? In order to explain their rapid ascent to such importance, Florian Fuchs identifies an essential role of literature, a role traditionally performed within classical civic discourse of storytelling, by looking at new or updated forms of this civic practice in modernity. Fuchs's focus in this groundbreaking book is on the fate of topical speech, on what is exchanged between participants in argument or conversation as opposed to rhetorical speech, which emanates from and ensures political authority. He shows how after the decline of the Ars topica in the eighteenth century, various forms of literary speech took up the role of topical speech that Aristotle had originally identified. Thus, his book outlines a genealogy of various literary short forms—from fable, fairy tale, and novella to twenty-first century video storytelling—that attempted on both "high" and "low" levels of culture to exercise again the social function of topical speech. Some of the specific texts analyzed include the novellas of Theodor Storm and the novella-like lettre de cachet, proverbial fictions of Gustave Flaubert and Gottfried Keller, the fairy tale as rediscovered by Vladimir Propp and Walter Benjamin, the epiphanies of James Joyce, and the video narratives of Hito Steyerl.

Focusing on moments of continuity and rupture, as well as the thin lines of fracture in Critical philosophy itself, Metaphysics of Nature and Failure in Kant's Opus postumum navigates the rough terrain of Kant's final thoughts. Terrence Thomson argues that Opus postumum constitutes Kant's last attempt to deliver on the promise of a system of speculative reason in a work called 'metaphysics of nature'. He journeys through the drafts left on Kant's desk when he died to encounter their failure to establish this work rather than their projected success. Far from this signaling that we give up on serious study of the Opus postumum, however, Thomson shows how failure is not something Kant shied away from but rather embraced as fuel for his continued thinking. Indeed, it is this failure that opens the door to a greater understanding of the dissonances at the core of Critical philosophy itself. Moreover, it indicates what it means to be in the process of philosophizing and that Kant was well-aware that to think often means to repeatedly fail. Suggesting how the very call for a metaphysics to be established upon the Critical philosophy can only ever fail to abide by the threshold it sets up, this book offers a new perspective on the central bind Kant repeatedly confronts in Opus postumum within the modern European tradition of philosophy. To deliver the system of metaphysics Kant calls for means to transgress the bounds of Critical philosophy, but to attempt to deliver it is nonetheless an unavoidable part of Critical philosophy itself.

This book reinvents aspects of the rhetorical tradition as part of a philosophical pluralism oriented to “All-in-Allness”. Its chapters unfold some of the ethical and intellectual responsibilities philosophy and rhetoric share, their commitments toward literature broadly conceived, the limited authority of their interpretations, and the kinds of judgments they issue in. This volume revisits one of the great challenges of our time - the global circulation of technology and the resulting technicisation. Together, the introductory essay and six case studies argue that while circulation inevitably leads to the global standardisation of some forms, successful technicisation depends on local appropriation that takes place in the interstitial zones of translation. These zones, characterised by their asymmetrical power relations, need to be constantly renegotiated, recreated, and maintained in order to sustain decolonial translations. In times of entrenched social upheaval and multiple crises, we need the kind of social theory that is prepared to look at the big picture, analyze the broad developmental features of modern societies, their structural conditions and dynamics, and point to possible ways out of the crises we face. Over the last couple of decades, two German sociologists, Andreas Reckwitz and Hartmut Rosa, have sought to provide wide-ranging social theories of this kind. While their theories are very different, they share in common the view that the analysis of modernity as a social formation must be kept at the heart of sociology, and that the theory of society should ultimately serve to diagnose the crises of the present. In this book, Andreas Reckwitz and Hartmut Rosa join forces to examine the value and the limits of a theory of society today. They provide clear and concise accounts of their own theories of society, explicate their key concepts – including "singularization" in the case of Reckwitz, "acceleration" and “resonance” in the case of Rosa – and draw out the implications of their theories for understanding the multiple crises we face today.
