Excerpt from History of American Journalism, 1917 Frederic Hudson, for many years the managing director of The New York Herald, issued in 1873 his Journalism in the United States. This book, which aimed to cover the period from 1690 to 1872, contains many interesting sketches of editors and their papers, but is so full of errors, and is so biased in its point of view, that it cannot be accepted as an authority even for the period with which Mr. Hudson was most familiar. The United States Government in 1880 issued, in connection with its publications of the census for that year, a History and Present Conditions of the Newspaper and Periodical Press of the United States. For the historical part, the book was based upon the works already mentioned and perpetuated their errors. Its statistical matter, being compiled from data furnished to the census, makes it a valuable contribution to journalism history. In 1881 Charles Dudley Warner, a member of the editorial staff of The Courant, of Hartford, Connecticut, published an essay, The American Newspaper, which he had read before the Social Science Association at Saratoga Springs, New York, on September 6 of that year. Brief as was this booklet, it was a most comprehensive summary of journalism as it then existed. Nothing else of general scope, except scattering magazine articles and biographies of individual editors, has appeared to record the developments of American journalism. The author of this book, while acknowledging his indebtedness to the works already enumerated, has sought in every instance to verify facts as original sources: in his attempt to do so he has been greatly assisted by secretaries of state historical societies to whom acknowledgment for courtesies rendered must first be made. To acknowledge in print others who have helped in the preparation of the manuscript is obviously impossible, except in a few cases. Excerpt from American Journalists in Europe, 1919 It was an afterthought which prompted the attempt to make a permanent, record of the visit of the industrial journalists to England and France as guests of the British Ministry of Information. If we had fully appreciated the great opportunity afforded us, a detailed plan for making this record would have been inaugurated at the start. As it is, many important happenings have not received the attention they deserve. No apology is offered, however, for the lack of literary merit, as the effort has been solely directed to plain statement of facts. Plagiarism is frankly admitted, as the writer has used without stint abstracts from the various writings which have appeared in the numerous publications represented by the party, and elsewhere. Our chief apology is offered to the British Ministry of Information for whatever omissions may have occurred, and, further, for so weak an attempt to cover so important a matter. Apologies arc further extended to the various members of the party - many of whom would have given this narrative the literary distinction which it so richly deserves. Taking Journalism Seriously: News and the Academy argues that scholars have remained too entrenched within their own disciplinary areas resulting in isolated bodies of scholarship. This is the first book to critically survey journalism scholarship in one volume and organize it by disparate fields. The book reviews existing journalism research in such diverse fields as sociology, history, language studies, political science, and cultural analysis and dissects the most prevalent and understated research in each discipline.

Excerpt from The Story of Harper's Magazine, 1850-1917 In London, not long ago, I met an English lady who introduced the subject of magazines. She spoke with bristling pride of those of her own country and asked if I did not agree with her that they were the finest in the world. Somewhat wondering at her enthusiasm, I asked which magazine it was that she had particularly in mind, whereupon, never having noticed that the magazine that she had learned to prize was the English edition of the American monthly, she answered, with a glow of fervor in her voice Harper's! And have you any better? No, I said, we have not. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It has generally been assumed that the political and social ideas of early Upper Canadians rested firmly on veneration of eighteenth-century British conservative values and unequivocal rejection of all things American. Jane Errington's examination of the attitudes and beliefs of the Upper Canadian elite between 1784 and 1828, as seen through their private papers, public records, and the newspapers of the time, suggests that this view is far too simplistic. Errington argues that in order to appreciate the evolution of Upper Canadian beliefs, particularly the development of political ideology, it is necessary to understand the various and changing perceptions of the United States and of Great Britain held by different groups of colonial leaders. Colonial ideology inevitably evolved in response to changing domestic circumstances and to the colonists' knowledge of altering world affairs. It is clear, however, that from the arrival of the first loyalists in 1748 to the passage of the Naturalization Bill in 1828, the attitudes and beliefs of the Upper Canadian elite reflect the fact that the colony was a British-American community. Errington reveals that Upper Canada was never as anti-American as popular lore suggests, even in the midst of the War of 1812. By the mid 1820s, largely due to their conflicting views of Great Britain and the United States, Upper Canadians were divided. The Tory administration argued that only by decreasing the influence of the United States, enforcing a conservative British mould on colonial society, and maintaining strong ties with the Empire could Upper Canada hope to survive. The forces of reform, on the other hand, asserted that Upper Canada was not and could not become a re-creation of Great Britain and that to deny its position in North America could only lead to internal dissent and eventual amalgamation with the United States. Errington's description of these early attempts to establish a unique Upper Canadian identity reveals the historical background of a dilemma which has yet to be resolved. This edition of the book is updated with a new introduction by the author.

American Journalism And International Relations written by Giovanna Dell'Orto and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-29 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

American Journalism and International Relations argues that the American press' disengagement from world affairs has critical repercussions for American foreign policy. Giovanna Dell'Orto shows that discourses created, circulated, and maintained through the media mold opinions about the world and shape foreign policy parameters. This book is a history of U.S. foreign correspondence from the 1840s to the present, relying on more than 2,000 news articles and twenty major world events, from the 1848 European revolutions to the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. Americans' perceptions of other nations, combined with pervasive and enduring understandings of the United States' role in global politics, act as constraints on policies. Dell'Orto finds that reductive media discourse (as seen during the 1967 War in the Middle East or Afghanistan in the 1980s) has a negative effect on policy, whereas correspondence grounded in events (such as during the Japanese attack on Shanghai in the 1930s or the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991) fosters effective leadership and realistic assessments.
