Excerpt from History of Art in the British Isles This little book makes no pretence to add to the knowledge of the student, or to throw any new light on any single subject. It is addressed to those who, having made little or no study of art and its history, may be glad to know, not with any idea of practising art, or even of devoting much time to its study, the part it has played in the history of their country, and to form, as part of the equipment of a good citizen, some estimate of the place it ought to take in any civilisation worthy the name. The kind of information given in the book is dictated in part by the writer's experience of what University Extension and other audiences, fresh to the consideration of art, find interesting and readily assimilate. To arouse an interest in art generally, and in our own art in particular, is the aim, then, of the following pages; an those who, after reading them, may desire more detailed and extended knowledge, will find what they require in such books as those named at the end of the volume. Excerpt from The Early Norman Castles of the British Isles The chapters on Saxon and Danish earthworks in the present volume were written before the appearance of his book, though the results arrived at are only slightly different. In Chapter V. An effort is made to trace the first appearance of the private castle in European history. The private castle is an institution which is often care lessly supposed to have existed from time immemorial. The writer contends that it only appears after the establishment of the feudal system. The favourable reception given by archaeologists to the paper read before the Scottish Society led the writer to follow up this interesting subject, and to make a closer study of the motte-castles of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. The book now offered is the fruit of eleven years of further research. The result of the inquiry is to establish the theory advanced in that earlier paper, that these castles, in the British Islands, are in every case of Norman origin. Excerpt from Chapters in the History of the Insane in the British Isles I think it was Pascal who said that the last thing an author does in making a book is to discover what to put at the beginning. This discovery is easily made in the present instance. I wish to state that the range of this book, as its title implies, is mainly restricted to the salient points of the historical sketch it attempts to pourtray. To have written a complete History of the Insane in the British Isles would have necessitated the narration of details uninteresting to the general reader. Hence, as the periods and the institutions of greatest importance have alone been brought into prominence, others have been inevitably thrown into the shade. Excerpt from The Building of the British Isles: Being a History of the Construction and Geographical Evolution of the British Region Geographical Evolution - The Object of this volume is to treat the geological history Of the British Islands from a geotectonic and geographic point Of view, that is to say, to deal with the physical conditions under which the successive rock-groups were formed; the rocks themselves being described only so far as is necessary for ascertaining whence their component materials were derived, in order to form some conception of the relative position Of land and water during each Of the successive periods of geological time. The existing geographical and physical contours of the British Islands are the outcome of the long and varied geological history pertaining to this particular part of the world. There are few other regions of the earth's surface which in so small an area exhibit so many different systems of rocks as are to be found in the British Islands. England alone includes portions of nearly all the rock-systems which are found on the continent of Europe. Each Of these rock-groups was formed during the maintenance of certain physical and geographical conditions which were different from the conditions both Of the preceding and of the subsequent periods. When, therefore, we are able to form some definite conception of the geography of the British region during one particular period Of past time, we are restoring one phase in the geographical evolution of our islands. Excerpt from A Short History of England, for School Use Situation.-the British Isles lie just off the west coast Of Europe. They look on the map like cakes of ice crumbling away from a huge glacier. There are about five thousand islands in all. Some of them are mere ledges of rock that can serve only as nest ing-places for sea-birds. Some of them, like the Shetlands and the Orkneys, the Hebrides, Skye, Mull, the Isle of Man, and the Isle of Wight, are large enough to furnish food and Shelter to human beings, and have been inhabited from time immemorial. Two only, however, Great Britain and Ireland, are of sufficient importance to figure in the world's history. Excerpt from New Medieval and Modern History The continent of Europe is divided into three distinct parts. (i) The southern portion comprises the great peninsulas of Greece, Italy, and Spain. It is cut off from the central mass by an almost unbroken mountain chain, formed by the Pyrenees, the Alps, and their eastern continuations. (2) North of this lies a central land mass, stretching east and west across the con tinent, which broadens out in the east to form the great plain of Russia. (3) Beyond this lie the British Isles and the Scan dinavian peninsula. These lands are separated from the central portion by the English Channel, the North Sea, and the Baltic Sea, which is a sort of secondary Mediterranean.
