Excerpt from The History of British India, Vol. 6 of 6 The particular change which his opponents con templated, the removal of the government of India from the hands of a commercial corporation, would, he said, produce the following effects; It would retard the payment of the Company's debts; it would check the growing commerce between the two countries; and it would endanger the allegiance of India. He asked, if it would be wise to incur so much danger for a theory With regard to the first two of these hare, unsuppo assu mptions, which ought to have passed for nothing, experience has provided the answer. The government has remained as Mr. Dundas desired, and the Company, so far from paying its debts, has enormously encreased them; it has remained as Mr. Dundas desired, and the commerce, instead of increasing, has dwindled to a trifle. Excerpt from The History of the British Empire in India, Vol. 1 It is not possible to show any similar ground of security against errors of prejudice and on this point the work must be left to furnish its own vindication. No professions of impartiality would gain belief, if unsup ported by evidence of its existence, and none will be requisite if, as is confidently hoped, it shall appear that no transaction is related but under the influence of a desire to render neither more nor less than justice to all parties connected with it. Excerpt from The Cambridge History of India, Vol. 5 of 6: British India, 1497-1858 The spelling of proper names is generally that of the Imperial Gazetteer; all diacritical marks have been omitted. The reader will find that in this and the following volume the scale of treatment has had to be materially reduced. The period covered by them is much shorter, but it is also incomparably fuller, and the allocation of space has offered many difficult problems. In the circumstances it seemed to me desirable to economise as much as possible in the space given to political history in order to provide room for an outline of the development of the administrative system, a subject on which easily accessible information is scanty and in adequate. I have thus been able to make room not only for the chapters dealing with this topic in the present volume but for a longer series of chapters in the next.
