Known by the Greeks as ‘Megalónisos,’ or the ‘Great Island,’ the island of Crete has a long and varied history. Steeped in historical and cultural heritage, Crete is the most visited of the Greek islands. It has also been of paramount strategic importance for thousands of years, thanks to its location close to the junction of three continents and at the heart of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. For much of its long history, the island has been ruled by foreign invaders. Under the rule of the Mycenaeans, Dorians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Venetians, Ottoman Turks and, briefly, the Third Reich, Cretans, who are fierce lovers of freedom, have adapted to living with their conquerors and to the influence of foreign rule on their culture. In a dazzling contrast to these three thousand years of domination, we see two periods of the island’s independence: the vibrant apogee of the Minoan civilization and the brief period of autonomy before union with Greece at the beginning of the twentieth century. To guide us through this spectacular history, Chris Moorey, who has lived in Crete for over twenty years, provides an engaging and lively account of the island spanning from the Stone Age to the present day. A History of Crete steps in to fill a gap in scholarship on this fascinating island, providing the first complete history of Crete to be published for over twenty years, and the first ever that is written with a wide readership in mind.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1897 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VI. CRETAN SONGS AND LEGENDS. The popular songs of Greece, in which the Greek nationality through many centuries of oppression has still preserved itself, may be divided into several classes. I. Historical. Some of these go back as far as the tenth century, and deal with the heroic deeds of the Akrita, or frontier-soldiers of the Byzantine Empire: the scene is usually laid in Asia Minor, or Mount Taurus. It is not, however, until the second half of the eighteenth century that they become numerous. The Cretan Revolution of 1770, brought about by the ambition of the Empress Catherine of Russia, was the origin of a number of songs, which are practically the only historical documents extant concerning the heroic struggles of that period on the island. Amongst them are The Entry of the Turks into Sphakia, and Daskaloyiannes (Master John) of Sphakia. II. Religions. These comprise songs relating to the Church festivals, the Virgin Mary, the angels and saints, and, amongst the latter, St. George in particular, one of the most venerated saints in the Greek Church; songs relating to various events connected with the life of Christ. III. Romantic. These deal with the exploits of the Klephts (brigands), and romantic adventures generally. IV. Myrologia, or funeral songs, of which there is a very large nnmber. V. Love Songs and Erotic distichs, the latter almost exclusively confined to celebrating the charms of the lady. She is sometimes a rose, a pink, a pomegranate, an apple-tree loaded with fruit. When she passes along the street, it is filled with roses; she is as white as the snow on the mountains, her head is a vessel of silver, her hair threads of silk, her eyes blue as sapphires or black as the Athenian olive, her mouth a half-open...

*Includes pictures *Includes a bibliography for further reading Nearly 2,500 years after the Golden Age of Athens, people across the world today continue to be fascinated by the ancient Greeks, but who did the Ancient Greeks look up to? The answer to that question can be found in Homer's The Odyssey, in which Odysseus makes note of "a great town there, Cnossus, where Minos reigned." It was perhaps the earliest reference to the Minoan civilization, a mysterious ancient civilization that historians and archaeologists still puzzle over, but a civilization that renowned historian Will Durant described as "the first link in the European chain." Nearly 2,000 years before Homer wrote his epic poems, the Minoan civilization was centered on the island of Crete, a location that required the Minoans to be a regional sea power. And indeed they were, stretching across the Aegean Sea from about 2700-1500 BCE with trade routes extending all the way to Egypt. Modern perceptions of Classical Greece are almost invariably based on Athens and Sparta, but there are perhaps few areas as consistently undervalued as the island of Rhodes. Although solidly part of the Greek world for as long as there has been one, Rhodes, located just off the coast of Asia Minor, was also from its earliest times a port opening to the civilizations of the Eastern Mediterranean, and Rhodes was involved in every significant moment in ancient Greek history. The island often played a key role in world events which far surpassed its small size, and at one point even stood side-by-side with much larger kingdoms as one of the main powers in the Greek world. In the Archaic and Classical periods, Rhodes often stood as a prime exemplar of the highs and lows of its fellow Greek cities, and as the largest island of the Dodecanese, Rhodes' history is largely in line with that of the rest of those islands. Rhodes would reach the zenith of its power in the Hellenistic period following the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BCE. Even as the rest of the city-states waned compared to the much larger kingdoms of Alexander's successors in Egypt and Asia, Rhodes would come to the forefront as a main power in the Greek world, standing toe-to-toe with these Hellenistic kingdoms. Rhodes was for a time the foremost naval power in the Eastern Mediterranean, and one of the most powerful and richest cities in the world. It was during this time that the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was built on the island to celebrate Rhodes' equally monumental triumph over the armies of Demetrius the Besieger. It is hard to find an island on the map more central than Sicily. Located at the crossroads between Europe and Africa, and between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, Sicily has rarely been governed as an independent, unified state. Nonetheless, the island has always occupied a front-row seat to some of the most important events in history, and nowhere is this more obvious than during antiquity. It was during the Classical era that, especially under the tyrants (dictators) of the Greek city of Syracuse, Sicily came the closest to being governed as a single, unified, and independent state. In time, it came to challenge the powerful trade empire of Carthage, a former Phoenician colony in North Africa, and it vied with the cities and kingdoms of mainland Greece for primacy in the Greek world. Later on, Sicily would be both a prize and a battlefield during the First Punic War (263-241 BCE) and, to a lesser degree, also during the Second Punic War (218-201 BCE). These were massive, protracted conflicts between Carthage and the rising Roman Republic, and Rome would subsequently become the main power in the Mediterranean on its way to ruling much of the known world. Sicily would go on to become the Roman Republic's first territory outside of Italy and its first province.

Cretan Courage: The Milatos Cave and Beyond is a dramatic family history, beginning in Crete, Greece, which comes alive through the fascinating, multi-generational journey of Greek Cretans. The lively narrative includes eyewitness descriptions of Crete’s history, including massacres and attempted genocide by Turkish soldiers, death marches to slave markets, child kidnappings, mass murders, and systemic abuse of innocent women. Despite enduring unimaginable brutality, the actual events paint a vivid picture of Cretan courage and fortitude. After rebellions, revolution, and the ultimate liberation their island, the Cretans emerge with their extraordinary vitality, like a phoenix from the ashes. The family members’ paths diverge as some gamble their lives to emigrate to the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century. As immigrants in the U.S., they endure punishing factory work and frontline injuries in wars they fight for their new country. Despite hardships, many joys and accomplishments dominate their lives. As the third generation of Greek Americans come of age in the U.S., they learn their ancestral roots, and bond with prior generations that struggled to provide them with a better life. On the cusp of the 200-year anniversary of the historic Milatos Cave massacre, in which the author’s great-great-great-great grandfather was murdered, this book is a powerful account of the actual events and people that shaped history.
