Excerpt from History of Fifty Years' Progress That our secretary be advanced in wages five shillings weekly, with the following proviso: That he try to write his correspondence so that it may be easily read, or allow one of the clerks to write the correspondence and secretary sign the same. But all's well that ends well. Without recording any names, I tender my most sincere thanks to all who have willingly assisted me. It has been a labour of love to the members of the Historic Sub-committee, who have been ever ready to come to my aid. I have been helped more than anything by their patience and good fellow ship. Excerpt from The Renaissance of Girls Education in England: A Record of Fifty Years Progress To all whom it may interest I dedicate this brief summary of the events which have wrought a peace ful revolution among us during the last fifty years. Among the many changes of the half-century, the great transformation in the education of women surely deserves a record. The workers have been many, the help given of various kinds, yet no event is isolated, for all are links in one chain of progress. Fifty years ago a few far-sighted men and women gave the impetus; we who harvest where they sowed may like to be reminded, in this season of retrospects, of the great debt we owe them. What has touched the lives of so many women is the concern of all, and though I shall be proud indeed if my book prove welcome to teachers, I should wish most of all to address myself to that Old and long-tried friend of literature, the general reader. If he, or she, can be persuaded to spend an hour or two, learning the past and present of the education of our girls, my purpose will have been accomplished. Excerpt from The Negro's Progress in Fifty Years Will the ten million Negroes now in the United States continue to increase at the 100 per cent rate of the last 50 years? How long will they remain 75 per cent rural? Is the cityward tide affecting them equally with the white population? To what extent are they leaving the South and moving into the North? A moment's reflection will show that these are among the most vital questions confronting the serious minded people of our land. Increase of Negro Population According to the United States Census Bureau the increase of the Negro population was 120 per cent in the 50 years between 1860 and 1910. This population in 1860 was four and a half million (4,441,830). In 1910 the number had increased to practically ten million (9,827,763). It is interesting to note by way of comparison that the foreign-born population of the country was about two million in 1860 and thirteen and a third million in 1910. These two groups form a total of about 23 million people, or a fourth of our total population. In view of the many serious problems of social adjustment presented by each of these groups, it is quite significant that they should form such a large proportion of our population. Much interest has been aroused by the fact that the 1910 census showed an increase for the Negro population of only 11.2 per cent as against 18 per cent for 1900. This fact has strengthened the belief of those who have been giving periodic expression to their claim that the Negro is "dying out." Even a casual study of the question, however, shows that such a conclusion is not well founded. In the first place, an increase of 11.2 per cent is about equal to the natural increase of any of the European people. The 1911 census of the English people, for example, reported an increase by excess of births over deaths of 12.4 per cent. This rate for 1910 was only 11.6 per cent. Excerpt from Fifty Years of American Education: A Sketch of the Progress of Education in the United States But progress in mechanical inventions is but one phase of the development of science. Per haps the most significant changes of all have taken place in medicine. Forty years ago, says Sir William Osler, the world did not know the cause Of any of the great infections. Of all the great camp diseases plague, cholera, malaria, yellow fever, typhoid fever, typhus, and dysentery we know the mode of transmission, and of all but yellow fever, the germs. Man has now control of the most malign of Nature's forces in a way never dreamt of by our fathers. Half a century has done more than a hundred centuries to solve the problem of the first importance in his progress. Such are a few of the revolutionary changes which science has ushered in in the brief period of the half century which will, it seems, be known in history as the scientific age. Darwin's epochal discovery had been given to the world in I 8 59. Huxley, Spencer, Pasteur, Berthelot, Joule, Clerk Maxwell, Tait, and Kelvin were at work and Faraday was still alive when the period we are studying began. The creation of the sciences, always a slow process, had reached a period of intensification. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of the Great and Little Bolton Co-Operative Society Limited: Showing Fifty Years Progress The main purpose of this book is to mark out the Jubilee of the Great and Little Bolton Co-operative Society, and to set forth for the encouragement of others how a few working men, with plenty of determination and good sense, founded and set going in our town one of the greatest factors for good that has ever been accomplished in the annals of local history. Its issue is to provide each member with a Jubilee History of the Society, and it forms one of the events decided upon as part of the celebrations inaugurated in connection therewith. To all those who have joined the originators, and have been their successors in carrying the movement forward, high credit is due. The organisation and successful working of a large Society like ours year by year, and the surprising operations which have culminated in such a huge success, are equally entitled to the repute which belongs to all great enterprises. My acknowledgments and thanks are due first of all to Mr. William Bentley (the Society's Secretary), whose ability, kindness, and readiness to help in all the little details which he alone had access to have been of the greatest possible service to me. Excerpt from The Huddersfield Industrial Society Limited: History of Fifty Years' Progress, L860-1910 Having myself, for over thirty-two years, taken a somewhat active part in the affairs of the Society, I trust that I have written the following pages in an impartial spirit, and, as Shakespeare says, Nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice. The first and second chapters, although not directly relating to our Society, will, I hope, be found interesting and useful as affording a glimpse of the social and indus trial conditions which formerly o'btained in this district, and the efforts our forefathers made to propagate the principles of Co-operation. I wish to thankfully.acknowledge the valuable and cordial assistance I have received from Mr. J. T. Pren'tis (the Secretary of our Society) in my work of compilation.
