Excerpt from History of Geography This is not a history of geographical exploration, though the leading episodes in the advance of our knowledge of the face of the Earth are necessarily referred to in tracing the evolution of geography as a department of science. That is the object of this volume as one of a series dealing succinctly with the history of the various sciences. We are not con cerned to discuss whether Geography is entitled to be con sidered as a science or not. It is hoped that in the attempt to tell the story of its evolution up to the present day it will be evident that it is as amenable to scientific methods as any other department of human knowledge, and that it: performs important functions which are untouched by any other lines of research. I use the first person plural because I am greatly indebted to Mr. O. J. R. Howarth in coming to my help after I had accumulated much of the material, but was seriously delayed owing to a great increase in my official duties. The greater share of whatever merits the book may possess ought to be awarded to Mr. Howarth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Association of History and Geography But the relationship, in teaching, cannot be dismissed as simply one even between pupil, subject, and teacher. There is the further relationship between the subject and its fellows. The formal object lesson, though valuable from the aspect of sense training, often proved in practice barren and unstimulating. In the presentation and examination of the object there was often an isolation which, even when it did not lead to real distortion, did not at any rate generate' intelligent mental associations. It was with some relief, therefore, that teachers welcomed the wider conceptions involved in Nature Study, a subject which arded as favourable a field as the object lesson for the training of the senses, but which, at the same time, presented things in their natural setting. Excerpt from The Historical Geography of Europe, Vol. 1 of 2 It is now several years since this book was begun. It has been delayed by a crowd of causes, by a temporary loss of strength, by enforced absence from England, by other occupations and interruptions of various kinds. I mention this only because of the effect which I fear it has had on the book itself. It has been impossible to make it, what a book should, if possible, be, the result of one continuous effort. The mere fact that the kindness of the publishers allowed the early part to be printed some years back has, I fear, led to some repetition and even contradiction. A certain change of plan was found unavoidable. It proved impossible to go through the whole volume according to the method of the earlier chapters. Instead of treating Europe as a whole, I found it needful to divide it into several large geographical groups. The result is that each of the later chapters has had to go over again some small amount of ground which had been already gone over in the earlier chapters. In some cases later lights have led to some changes of view or expression. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Relations of Geography History Every reader of history is aware that he must learn some geography, if he would understand what he reads. Comparatively few however, if one may judge from experience, seem to realize how much light geography throws on history. Geographical influences account for much that happens or has happened. Geographical knowledge affords valuable data for solving historical problems. At the same time human action alters the aspect of those things of which geography takes coghi zance: man cuts canals and tunnels mountains, drains marshes and constructs artificial harbours, though it must be admitted that these things are trifles compared to the steady operation of geographical causes all history through. I have attempted to point out systematically how these causes work, first in general, and then in reference to the various countries of Europe. Obviously this can only be done in specimens: to do it fully would be to write all history afresh. The specimens given may however, I hope, suffice to call the attention of students of history to the modes in which geography operates, so that they may be ready to perceive its influence on whatever period or country they may be dealing with. Excerpt from A Sketch of Historical Geography We shall perhaps gain the best idea of the gradual expansion of knowledge if we go back nearly to the earliest times of which we have any definite historical accounts, and from that as a starting-point, picture to ourselves the world as known to the more civilised nations, at intervals up to the present time. Excerpt from An Historical Geography The most observable difference between one work and the other is this, that in my Geography of the Old Testament I have found it requisite to have frequent recourse to the Hebrew language, and to make use of some terms of the Hebrew Gramma rians; Which-because it is likely some readers may not be acquainted with, I judged this the most pro per place to explain them in. Excerpt from Physical Geography Physical geography is the history of the Earth, its past and present, interpreted by the light of Astronomy, Geology, and Biology. It is not a mere description of the features of sea and land, for these, as we now see them, are only one phase in a series Of events Of which we do not know the beginning, nor can we foretell the end. The enumeration, however accurate and exhaustive, of the movements of Ocean and Atmosphere is comparatively useless, unless we can arrive at some general principle to which these are subordinated. Nor is it enough to know the plants and animals which occupy the various regions of land and water we must seek for the explanation of their diversity, and ascertain if the distribution of organised beings in the past throws any light on their relations in the present. Words And Places written by Isaac Taylor and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-02 with Family & Relationships categories.

Excerpt from Words and Places: Illustrations of History, Ethnology, and Geography In the lately published collection of Essays and Studies by Members of the English Association, Dr. Henry Bradley begins his essay on English place names by remarking that of the many thousand names on the Ordnance Map of England, some, like Newcastle and Blackwater, have an obvious meaning, and some, like Thames and Helvellyn, have not. "It is natural," he continues, "that curiosity with regard to these enigmatical names should be very widely felt, and the writers who have attempted to satisfy this curiosity are innumerable. Unfortunately nearly everything that has been written on the subject is worthless." But he excepts from this condemnation Canon Isaac Taylor's Names and their Histories, a companion volume to the present book. A yet later and yet more cautious scholar may even class these books as fiction, but whether as fiction or not he must applaud it. In all ages place names have been favourite beasts of the chase. They are noble game, and they have given marvellous sport. They continue to do so, and generation after generation they survive to fascinate and to elude us. Take, for example, the name of Icknield Street. It has long been connected with the tribe of the Iceni who held the land round about its north-eastern terminus, and not many years ago Dr. Edwin Guest, in his Origines Celticae, translated the ancient Icenhilde Weg as "the highway (or military way) of the Iceni." Archaeologists sprang up to show that the Iceni had given their name to several places upon its course. Ickleton was supposed to be Icenton; Icklingham was Iceningham; Ickleford was Icenford. But then appeared Professor Haverfield and Dr. Bradley. Professor Haverfield showed that the Icknield Way could not be satisfactorily traced in Norfolk and Suffolk, the country of the Iceni, and that there were places just as probably named after that tribe in Middlesex, Sussex, and Yorkshire. These places, he affirms, owe their names to English personal names like Icel and Icca. Finally he says: "Nor could either the real name Icenhilde, or the supposed names Iceningham and the like, have grown out of the name Iceni.
