Excerpt from The Relations of Geography History Every reader of history is aware that he must learn some geography, if he would understand what he reads. Comparatively few however, if one may judge from experience, seem to realize how much light geography throws on history. Geographical influences account for much that happens or has happened. Geographical knowledge affords valuable data for solving historical problems. At the same time human action alters the aspect of those things of which geography takes coghi zance: man cuts canals and tunnels mountains, drains marshes and constructs artificial harbours, though it must be admitted that these things are trifles compared to the steady operation of geographical causes all history through. I have attempted to point out systematically how these causes work, first in general, and then in reference to the various countries of Europe. Obviously this can only be done in specimens: to do it fully would be to write all history afresh. The specimens given may however, I hope, suffice to call the attention of students of history to the modes in which geography operates, so that they may be ready to perceive its influence on whatever period or country they may be dealing with. Excerpt from Home Geography and World Relations The purpose has been to show the relation of the individual pupil to all parts of his own country, and thereby to emphasize the interdependence of people commercially and industrially. Any treatment of Home Geography must be general in order to make it true for all children in all localities. In the suggestive questions, however, an effort has been made to localize the Home Geography for the individual pupil. He is asked to study his own environment and to explain its geography by the universal facts presented in the text. Excerpt from Geography in Its Relation to History: A Lecture Delivered at the Birkbeck Institution I will not affirm that the relationship which geography bears to the records of human action in past ages offers the most attractive of the many aspects under which the subject may be regarded, though it would not be difficult, I think, to make out a strong case in support of such an assertion. Nor am I by any means sure that the historical relationships of geography are those that find most favour with professed cultivators of geographical science in the present day. There is a tendency, in some quarters, to speak of physical geography as the only geography worthy to be ranked as a science, and to regard other branches of the study as of inferior value, and as consequently entitled to little esteem. I hold this tendency to be founded upon an erroneous conception of what geography really is. And to involve an imperfect estimate of the place which physical geo graphy occupies (or rather should occupy) in the general scheme of geographical study. The truth is, that all geo graphy, if it be worth the name, is physical, or natural that is to say, is based upon a correct description of the earth's natural features and aspects, climates and productions. Physical geography is neither a new subject nor a separate subject, although the vastly increased and still increasing body of facts bearing upon the natural aspects and pheno mena of the globe, which have been accumulated within modern times, have formed the material from which ex tended generalizations, unknown to former ages, have been derived, and the relationships between geography and other branches of natural science more clearly established. Excerpt from The Association of History and Geography But the relationship, in teaching, cannot be dismissed as simply one even between pupil, subject, and teacher. There is the further relationship between the subject and its fellows. The formal object lesson, though valuable from the aspect of sense training, often proved in practice barren and unstimulating. In the presentation and examination of the object there was often an isolation which, even when it did not lead to real distortion, did not at any rate generate' intelligent mental associations. It was with some relief, therefore, that teachers welcomed the wider conceptions involved in Nature Study, a subject which arded as favourable a field as the object lesson for the training of the senses, but which, at the same time, presented things in their natural setting. Excerpt from The Earth and Man: Lectures on Comparative Physical Geography, in Its Relation to the History of Mankind This little work is not, then, a treatise on the subject indicated by its title. The author would wish to consider this unforeseen publication only as the forerunner of a more complete work, the materials of which, gradually collected during long years of study, and still daily accumulating, he hopes to arrange, and work out more at leisure, if not in the same form, at least in the same spirit. However, he is confident that the man of science will find, in this first sketch, the traces of serious and matured studies. Numerous quotations and references were incompatible with the form of these discourses. The facts, properly so called, are drawn from the common domain of science and as to the results that have been deduced from their combination, the author wil lingly leaves to men versed in the subject the task of distinguish ing those which may be regarded as constituting a progress in knowledge of the creation, and of its relations to man. The specimens given may however, I hope, suffice to call the attention of students of history to the modes in which geography operates, so that they may be ready to perceive its influence on whatever period or country they may be dealing with. It is plainly impossible to supply maps enough to exhibit in detail every geographical fact to which I refer, and every historical fact connected with them. I have therefore taken for granted that readers will consult their own atlases. The only exception made is in favour of two maps of Europe, so placed that they may be easily compared. Excerpt from The Historical Geography of Europe, Vol. 1 of 2 It is now several years since this book was begun. It has been delayed by a crowd of causes, by a temporary loss of strength, by enforced absence from England, by other occupations and interruptions of various kinds. I mention this only because of the effect which I fear it has had on the book itself. It has been impossible to make it, what a book should, if possible, be, the result of one continuous effort. The mere fact that the kindness of the publishers allowed the early part to be printed some years back has, I fear, led to some repetition and even contradiction. A certain change of plan was found unavoidable. It proved impossible to go through the whole volume according to the method of the earlier chapters. Instead of treating Europe as a whole, I found it needful to divide it into several large geographical groups. The result is that each of the later chapters has had to go over again some small amount of ground which had been already gone over in the earlier chapters. In some cases later lights have led to some changes of view or expression. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Better International Relationships Through the Teaching of Geography: A Thesis Ever since the World War the United States has become more engrossed in its relations with other nations of the world. The citizens themselves are realizing this more and more, and as a result an increasing interest is being manifested in all movements with an international aspect. This is clearly evident, for never in the history of the press have so many articles or books appeared stating opinions on world-mindedness.
