Excerpt from High School Geography: Physical, Economic and Regional The most important thing about the earth is the fact that it is a human planet, that men not only live upon it, but make. Somehow, a living out of it. The earth as a planet, a machine which goes and works, an organism which has grown and developed in the past and will continue to do so in the future, has never been so thoroughly studied and understood as it is to - day. The main result of such study, under the name of physical geography, has been a favorite subject in secondary schools. Some special phases of human activity, more or less closely related to the earth, such as products, manufactures, trade, races, customs, language, religion, and government, are everywhere taught under the names of commercial and political geography. But these different kinds of geography are seldom brought closely together, and the crowning relationship of all geographic science, the relation of the human species to its natural environment, is generally missed or but dim seen. Excerpt from Home Geography and World Relations The purpose has been to show the relation of the individual pupil to all parts of his own country, and thereby to emphasize the interdependence of people commercially and industrially. Any treatment of Home Geography must be general in order to make it true for all children in all localities. In the suggestive questions, however, an effort has been made to localize the Home Geography for the individual pupil. He is asked to study his own environment and to explain its geography by the universal facts presented in the text. Excerpt from Geography in Its Relation to History: A Lecture Delivered at the Birkbeck Institution I will not affirm that the relationship which geography bears to the records of human action in past ages offers the most attractive of the many aspects under which the subject may be regarded, though it would not be difficult, I think, to make out a strong case in support of such an assertion. Nor am I by any means sure that the historical relationships of geography are those that find most favour with professed cultivators of geographical science in the present day. There is a tendency, in some quarters, to speak of physical geography as the only geography worthy to be ranked as a science, and to regard other branches of the study as of inferior value, and as consequently entitled to little esteem. I hold this tendency to be founded upon an erroneous conception of what geography really is. And to involve an imperfect estimate of the place which physical geo graphy occupies (or rather should occupy) in the general scheme of geographical study. The truth is, that all geo graphy, if it be worth the name, is physical, or natural that is to say, is based upon a correct description of the earth's natural features and aspects, climates and productions. Physical geography is neither a new subject nor a separate subject, although the vastly increased and still increasing body of facts bearing upon the natural aspects and pheno mena of the globe, which have been accumulated within modern times, have formed the material from which ex tended generalizations, unknown to former ages, have been derived, and the relationships between geography and other branches of natural science more clearly established. Excerpt from High School Geography Of late years the study of Physical Geography has made rapid advances; it forms part of the course of study in higher schools, and has its lectureships and professorships in various universities of the United States and Europe. It is recognized not only as an important study in itself, cultivating the habit of observation and of associating cause and effect, but also as an introduction, or rather an incitement, to the study of various sciences. Physical Geography, a description of Nature in What pertains to the Earth, is eclectic in character. Resting mainly on Geology, and only to a less degree upon Meteor ology, it reaches out to Astronomy, to Mineralogy, to Chemistry, to Biology, and even to History and Political Economy. Excerpt from The Relations of Geography History Every reader of history is aware that he must learn some geography, if he would understand what he reads. Comparatively few however, if one may judge from experience, seem to realize how much light geography throws on history. Geographical influences account for much that happens or has happened. Geographical knowledge affords valuable data for solving historical problems. At the same time human action alters the aspect of those things of which geography takes coghi zance: man cuts canals and tunnels mountains, drains marshes and constructs artificial harbours, though it must be admitted that these things are trifles compared to the steady operation of geographical causes all history through. I have attempted to point out systematically how these causes work, first in general, and then in reference to the various countries of Europe. Obviously this can only be done in specimens: to do it fully would be to write all history afresh. The specimens given may however, I hope, suffice to call the attention of students of history to the modes in which geography operates, so that they may be ready to perceive its influence on whatever period or country they may be dealing with. Excerpt from Physical Geography Physical geography is the history of the Earth, its past and present, interpreted by the light of Astronomy, Geology, and Biology. It is not a mere description of the features of sea and land, for these, as we now see them, are only one phase in a series Of events Of which we do not know the beginning, nor can we foretell the end. The enumeration, however accurate and exhaustive, of the movements of Ocean and Atmosphere is comparatively useless, unless we can arrive at some general principle to which these are subordinated. Nor is it enough to know the plants and animals which occupy the various regions of land and water we must seek for the explanation of their diversity, and ascertain if the distribution of organised beings in the past throws any light on their relations in the present. Excerpt from The Inductive Geography The aim in geography teaching should be to give the pupil knowledge of the earth as it ministers to human life. Geography is not a distinct science; in its three great divisions, mathematical, physical, and political, it draws from the sciences of astronomy, geology, biology, and history. There seems to be no limit to its field; it may include much or little from these great departments of knowledge, according to the tastes and preferences of instructors. The problems confronting the author of a text-book in geography are mainly three: first, the matter to be included; second, the order of arrangement; third, the method of treatment. In the preparation of The Inductive Geography, these problems have been carefully considered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Business Geography Modern geography has become a definite science. Its principles are so well defined that a knowledge of the physical conditions under which a race has lived and now lives gives a reasonably reliable indi cation as to the capacity, activity, Occupations, and business relap tions of that race. In studying this growing science the first step is to understand the main principles. That is the reason for Part I of this book. A second step is to apply the principles to concrete prob lems as is done in Part II. There the community engaged in a particular line of activity is taken as the unit in Order that the geographical relationships may first be studied in relatively simple forms before going on to the more complex regional studies of Parts III and IV. In the regional chapters the aim is to give a clear conception of the way in which geographic conditions influence the products of a region, the capacity of the people, the direction in which their activities are turned, and the nature and extent of their business relations with other regions.
