Excerpt from History of King Charles the First of England Charles the first, of England, ascended the throne with very high ideas of the heredi tary rights of his family, and the chief point Of interest in the history Of his reign is the contest in which he engaged with the English people to maintain them. For twenty -four years the struggle was maintained, and then came the day when the king stepped through a window Of his banqueting hall in Whitehall Palace to a scaffold especially erected outside. When the head Of the Tyrant, traitor and murderer, Charles Stuart was held up to general view amid a death-like stillness, men said kingship had been killed, and the people were to rule. The narratives are not tales founded upon history, but history itself, without any embellishment, or any deviations from the strict truth so far as it can now be discovered by an attentive examination of the annals writ ten at the time when the events themselves cc curred. Excerpt from Commentaries on the Life and Reign of Charles the First, King of England Two centuries have elapsed - a short period in the history of national revolutions - since Charles the First ascended the throne of Eng land, and the name of this monarch still awakens the most conflicting opinions. Yet a right understanding of the character and conduct of one who involuntarily became a most eminent actor in a mighty revolution can never be a matter of indifference to the philosopher and the politician; nor should sachan exhibition of human nature, where the ennobling and the degrading passions are at the same time called forth, fail to interest our common sympathies. Excerpt from History of King Richard the Third of England King richard the third, known com mouly in history as Richard the Usurper, was perhaps as bad a man as the principle of hered itary sovereignty ever raised to the throne, or perhaps it should rather be said, as the principle of hereditary sovereignty ever made. There is no evidence that his natural disposition was marked with any peculiar depravity. He was made reckless, unscrupulous, and cruel by the influences which surrounded him, and the cir cumstances in which he lived, and by being habituated to believe, from his earliest child hood, that the family to which he belonged were born to live in luxury and splendor, and to reign, while the millions that formed the great mass of the community were created only to toil and to obey. The manner in which the principles of pride, ambition, and desperate love of power, which were instilled into his mind in his earliest years, brought forth in the end their. Excerpt from History of King Richard the Second of England King richard the second lived in the days when the chivalry of feudal times was in all its glory. His father, the Black Prince; his uncles, the sons of Edward the Third, and his ancestors in a long line, extending back to the days of Richard the First, were among the most illustrious knights of Europe in those days, and their history abounds in the wonderful exploits, the narrow escapes, and the romantic adven tures, for which the knights errant of the Mid dle Ages were so renowned. This volume takes up the story of English history at the death of Richard the First, and continues it to the time of the deposition and death of Richard the Sec ond, with a View of presenting as complete a picture as is possible, within such limits, of the ideas and principles, the manners and customs, and the extraordinary military undertakings and exploits of that wonderful age. Excerpt from The Manner of the Coronation of King Charles the First of England: At Westminister, 2 Feb, 1626 When the learned editor of Monumenta Ritualia was engaged in making a comparison of the various Orders of Coronation used in the case of successive Kings and Queens of England, he was unable to bring forward any satisfactory authority for the form used at Candlemas, 1626, when Charles I. was crowned. Mr. Maskell therefore was forced to refer his readers to "the very obscure and confused account in Prynne, Signal loyalty (pp. 90, 270)." Thanks to the liberality of His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury, and to the great kindness of the authorities of St. John's College, Cambridge, we are now able to print (1) The collation of an order contemplated, and (2) The form actually used upon the memorable occasion above-mentioned. (3) Notes written by Dr. William Laud (then Bishop of St. David's), some immediately before, and others subsequently to the Coronation. The second of these documents (transcribed for the Henry Bradshaw Society, by Mr. Alfred Rogers, from the little volume which the King is said, by an excellent authority, to have held in his hand at the ceremony) forms the basis of our text. The first and third contribute the majority of our annotations. Reference has been made occasionally to a fourth MS. authority, viz., Sancroft's draft made by him for the Coronation of James II., for which purpose he had recourse to the Coronation Service of Charles I. Negotiations for Prince Charles's marriage with the Princess Henrietta Maria of France had been concluded shortly before the death of K. James I., but the nuptial ceremony had not as yet been performed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. At the very beginning of the world-encircling history of the anglo-saxon race looms his majestic figure.
