This is a well-written biography of King Louis XIV of France. The book opens with a summary of his parents, Louis XIII and Anne of Austria. Louis XIII was a mere teenager at his wedding; Anne just eleven. It was common place for nobles to marry this young during the 1600s, which seems inconceivable from a twenty-first century perspective.Louis XIII died when his son was seven, leaving Anne to rule France as regent. Louis XIV was crowned king of France at the age of thirteen. It seems incredible that one so young should be given so much power. This perhaps was the first contributing factor to turning him into a man who instigated many cruelties to his subjects. What Louis did to Frenchmen of the Protestant faith competes with what Hitler did to the Jews. He wanted France to be populated by Catholics only. Any Protestant who refused to convert would be assaulted by soldiers without mercy or even killed. This extended to young children, though many children were torn from the homes and forced to live with adult Catholics, who'd force them to adapt to their faith.Louis was power-obsessed. At one point he declared war on the Dutch with no apparent reason. Many of his actions shocked the rest of Europe in the latter half of the 1600s and the early 1700s.Louis was also fickle regarding women. He would flirt with his favourite mistresses without a thought for the queen. When a new young beauty caught his eye he'd focus his attentions on her, not caring how he mentally tortured his previous 'favourite'. Again and again his treatment of women proved heartless. As John Abbott - the author of this fine work - points out in the brief intro, Louis XIV's actions and cruelties to his subjects sewed the seeds of the French Revolution. Many of the poor starved so Louis could live in luxury and spend endless amounts of the treasury on creating new buildings.Despite all Louis XIV's faults, he was an interesting - and at times fascinating - character. I recommend this work to anyone interested in French or European history, or to those interested in historical figures who made a huge impact on the world, be it good or bad.

Abraham Lincoln raved that this series of historical biographies gave him "just that knowledge of past men and events which I need. I have read them with the greatest interest. To them I am indebted for about all the historical knowledge I have." Considered what we would now call "young adult" literature, this collection, first published between 1848 and 1871, was designed to present a clear, distinct, connected narrative of the lives of the great figures of world history, those people who have been most influential, at least as American pastor and historian JOHN STEVENS CABOT ABBOTT (1805-1877) saw it from his 19th-century perspective. Wildly popular and republished many times under different collected names, this replica set mimics the 1904 reprint known as the "Makers of History" series. It will delight students of history as well as show the scholar how history telling has changed over the last few centuries. More than 30 other volumes in the series are also available from Cosimo Classics. This volume, dating from 1870, covers French king Louis XIV (1638-1715), from his birth and childhood and his rule as "the boy-king" to festivities at the court, the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, intrigues and wars, and more.

Excerpt from History of Louis XIV WE all live a double life: the external life. Which the world sees, and the internal life of hopes and fears, joys and griefs, temptations and sins, which the world sees not, and of which it knows but little. None lead this double life more emphatically than those who are seated upon thrones. Though this historic sketch contains allu sions to all the most important events in the reign of Louis XIV., it has been the main ob jcet of the writer to develop the inner life of the palace; to lead the reader into the interior of the Louvre, the Tuileries, Versailles, and Marly, and to exhibit the monarch as a man, in the details of domestic privacy. This can more easily be done in reference to Louis XIV. Than any other king. Very many of the prominent members of his house hold left their autobiographies, filled with the minutest incidents of every-day life. King Louis XIV He was born on September 5th, 1638 in the French lap of luxury otherwise known as the "Chateau de Saint-Germain-en-Laye." This extravagant palace of French excess is located about 12 miles west of Paris. His birth name, "Louis-Dieudonne," is French for, literally, "Gift for God." This belief of divine right, initially inspired by his mother Queen Anne, would be a powerful theme throughout Louis XIV's life. Inside you will read about... ✓ The Conflict of Kings ✓ War and Marriage ✓ The Noose Tightens ✓ The Scorched Earth of Louis XIV ✓ The Balance of Power ✓ Louis's Last Stand ✓ The Death of the King And much more!Although he didn't create absolutism in France, King Louis XIV seemed to embody the "divine right of kings" better than anyone had before him. Louis XIV directly correlated his own private good with that of the public good. There was really no concept of private property under Louis. The French King viewed all of France as his personal estate, with all who lived and toiled in his domain doing so only under his express permission; even so, not everyone in France had the same sentiment. The ones who most notably resisted the notion of the King's absolutism were the French nobles and aristocrats that Louis depended upon to raise armies and defend the country. Despite his theory of absolutism, this dependence on French nobility to bear arms, gave them increasing autonomy and independence from the King. It was this independence that would one day come to a head, and send Louis, the so-called "Sun King" of divine inheritance, into a full-blown conflict with his own subjects - and the world at large.

Louis Xiv And The Greatness Of France written by Maurice Ashley and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1965 with History categories.

Maurice Ashley evaluates how a determined, conscientious King Louis XIV was able to raise France to its greatest glory while plunging its people into deep misery. Maurice Ashley presents the life of Louis XIV, both as a man and a ruler, with attention on the explanation for a splendid age that nevertheless harbored the earliest roots of the French Revolution. From his ill-considered foreign policies, his refusal to tolerate the slightest compromise of his royal absolutism, and his total suppression of every deviation from strictly Roman Catholic orthodoxy, Ashley presents a complete review of Louis’ impact on France and its people.
