Excerpt from History of Serbia The most westerly of the jugo-slav lands, as well as the most civilised, is Croatia, a long narrow duchy stretching from the upper reaches of the Drave down to Fiume and the Adriatic in the south. A great range of limestone mountains begins near Fiume and runs all along the Adriatic coast to Montenegro. Unlike all other Jugo Slav lands, Croatia is not cut off by mountains or rivers from access to her neighbours. The fact has been most important in her history, for Latin and Teutonic influences have penetrated deep into her fibres. Fiume is a fine harbour which has nurtured a hardy race of Croatian sailors or pirates since the early Middle Ages. The Croats were subdued by the Magyars from the north, and are still subjects of the Hungarian Crown. But they have always claimed autonomy, and have had a precarious kind of Home Rule since 1868. Their most serious difficulty, however, has not been the oppression of the Magyars, but the religious divisions of their own race. Two-thirds of the Croats Of Croatia are Catholics and one-third Orthodox Greeks, and it is only within recent times that Magyar oppression has welded the two fragments of the race into one. The result has been a great impulse towards realising the unity of the Jugo Slav race, for Zagreb (agram) Is not only the capital of Croatia but the cultural centre of Southern Slavdom. This home of literature and art has nurtured the educating influences which have produced the thought and expression of unity. If Serbia is the steel which struck thought into flame, Croatia is the flint enclosing the spiritual fire. Excerpt from Serbia and the Serbs Un'hl the outbreak of the war Serbia was perhaps to most Englishmen little more than a name, and not a very acceptable name. For it was the worst pages of her history which chiefly clung to people's memory. It is not surprising, therefore, that, when Europe was suddenly threatened with a great conflagration of which Serbia was supposed to be the cause, Englishmen were inclined to visit upon her their horror and indignation. Gradually, as proofs accumulated that, whatever the demerits of Serbia, she had been used on this occasion merely as a stalking-horse for vast ambitions bent on war, a reaction set in and grew with every fresh report of her splendid gallantry in the field. It is preposed in these pages to tell as brieflv as possible the story of Serbia and of the part her people have played throughout the course of events that have been leading up for many years past to the present catastrophe - a part that has been neither unimportant nor discreditable. Excerpt from Heroic Serbia Switzerland, a road and railway centre where the travellers of half Europe meet. Switzerland has been called the shunting pivot of the railway engines and tourists of the West. The Serbia of 1912 remained what she had been for five or six centuries past - the battlefield on which the ambitions and diplomatic intrigues of the East met. Already neighbouring armies were marking it out as the rendez-vous for the battles of the morrow. For five or six centuries Serbia had never known complete independence. During the close of the Middle Ages, before the arrival of the Turks in Europe, she had been a great and prosperous state stretching from the Save to the Adriatic. Peopled entirely by Jugoslavs (Southern Slavs), she was Christian and highly civilised. Thanks to her Adriatic ports, where the fleets of Venice touched, she could preserve contact with the West and especially with the Latin nations. She had intimate relations with the Italian cities and with the Kings of France and Spain. Western influence introduced to her our ideas, fashions and arts, and Serbia still has churches erected by the ancient master-builders and decorated by the fresco painters of the West. But in the middle of the fourteenth century the Turks of Asia Minor invaded the European provinces of the Byzantine Empire. Excerpt from On Great Serbia Italy's entry into the European conflict seriously affects the successful and satisfactory adjustment of territorial rights among the Balkan Slavs, especially of these within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. If Italy's ambitions materalize, this war, professed to be waged on the behalf of "liberty and justice," will be but a cruel mockery, when applied to Southern Slavs, especially to the Croats and Slovenes, that inhabit the eastern littoral of the Adriatic, for instead of "liberty and justice" they will feel the bonds of oppression and wrong. Italy and, seemingly the whole world considers, Istria, Dalmatia and the adjacent islands a part of "unredeemed Italy" (Italia irredenta), Italy's lawful heritage, whose moral title to those countries is not to be questioned. Historically and ethnografically, those are purely Croatian countries, which were occupied and held by them since the middle of seventh century.* The Italians in Dalmatia and its islands constitute only three per centum of the total population, and in Istria less than one-third. Does this practically insignificant number of Italians justify Italy's desire and right of making these countries a part of its own body? It is the historic past that actuates Italy's ambition in this direction, and it points to this fact in a vague manner as a justification for its selfish schemes. The salient historical points that have a bearing on this question are here briefly mentioned. Dalmatia was a part of the Byzantine empire for six centuries (530-1102). Byzantine rule over Dalmatia was practically nominal, especially towards its close. Constantine Porphhyrogenete, states in his book "De Administrando Imperio," the Dalmatian in 887 completely destrowed a fleet dispatched against them by Venice, and for more than a century exacted tribute from the "Queen of Adriatic." In 998 they were finally subjugated by Doge Peter Orseolo II., who assumed the title of Duke of Dalamatia. Later on the Croats dominated there. In 1389 the whole Adriatic littoral from Rijeka (Fiume)to Kotor (Cattaro), except Zadar (Zara) and Dubrovnik (Ragusa) was annexed to the Bosnian kingdom by its founder, Stephen Tvrdko. Subsequent Turkish invasions shook the foundation of the Bosnian realm, and this rendered the Venetian conquest over Dalmatia easy. After 1463 Turkish advance continued, and in 1540 Dalmatia became a Turkish province. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Story of a Red Cross Unit in Serbia This book has been written at the request of many friends who wished to have some permanent record of the work done by our Mission, the "Anglo-Serbian Hospital," or the "Royal Free Hospital" Unit as it is also called, during our year in Serbia. It may also be of some interest to the general public as a plain story of one of the many subsidiary enterprises undertaken by the British peoples during the Great War. We hope that the details of the sanitary precautions adopted to prevent the occurrence and spread of typhus and other diseases may perhaps be of use to others who may be called upon in the future to set up hospitals under similar conditions in foreign countries. Our intimate association in war time both with the Serbs and with our Austro-Hungarian enemies gave us an insight into the character of both these nations which was of extreme interest to ourselves and which we have endeavoured to portray in the following pages. Indeed the whole of our year's stay in Serbia was a strange mixture of tragedy, comedy and pathos. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Balkans: A History of Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, Rumania, Turkey The authors Of this volume have not worked in conjunc tion. Widely separated, engaged on other duties, and pressed for time, we have had no opportunity for interchange of views. Each must be held responsible, therefore, for his own section alone. If there be any discrepancies in our writings (it is not unlikely in so disputed a field of history) we can only regret an unfortunate result of the circum stances. Owing to rapid change in the relations Of our country to the several Balkan peoples, the tone of a section written earlier may differ from that Of another written later. It may be well to state that the sections on Serbia and Bulgaria were finished before the decisive Balkan develop ments of the past two months. Those on Greece and Rumania represent only a little later stage of the evolution. That on Turkey, compiled between one mission abroad and another, was the latest to be finished. If our sympathies are not all the same, nor given equally to friends and foes, none of us would find it possible to indite a Hymn of Hate about any Balkan people. Every one of these peoples, on whatever side he be fighting to-day, has a past worthy of more than our respect and interwoven in some intimate way with our history. That any one of them is arrayed against us to-day is not to be laid entirely or chiefly at its own door. They are all fine peoples who have not obtained their proper places in the sun. The best of the Osmanli nation, the Anatolian peasantry, has yet to make its physical and moral qualities felt under civilized conditions. As for the rest - the Serbs and the Bulgars, who have enjoyed brief moments of barbaric glory in their past.
