How many hours did Dr. Starr, the student, spend inside the Barnes Medical College, St. Louis (cover background)? Working from dusk to dawn refining the art of healing for a people he loved, only to realize later he was primed and able to gather his people's history and lineages that unknowingly would be sought after for decades after he left this mortal coil. From first addition copies of both, the, History of the Cherokee Indians and Their Legends and Folklore (1921) and Early History of the Cherokees (1917). This compilation has been fully scanned or transcribed when needed with an added combined full name index all in one volume. This work of two-century-old books contains condensed family histories, hundreds of Cherokee relations with important lineages, tribal offices, Cherokee culture and history with pictures; plus a RARE signature of Emmet Starr.

Cherokee people like all other Native American Indian tribes possess a huge oral history. Before the time of written words, the history, customs and skills of a tribe were passed down through word-of-mouth and storytelling. Today, it is still an important part of Cherokee life. Elder tribe members use stories to teach morals and culture to children and others while keeping a rich history alive. Storytelling also allows people to get to know one another. The stories of the Cherokee people make us unique, but stories will be known only as long as they are told. When someone ceases to tell a story, part of our cultural knowledge is gone. Under old traditional law, these tales or stories were only told to fellow Cherokee or other Indian People. Many of these stories contained within this book were recorded by James Mooney who lived with the Cherokee in the 1800's. These include animal stories, creation myths, legends, and ghost stories, as well as, historical events such as the Trail of Tears. These stories have been passed from generation to generation and as with tradition, and have been left as much intact as possible. I learned many of these stories from my grandfather as a child, just as other Cherokee children did. As with tradition, these stories are now shared with you, to go forward and share with a future generation. In this collection, you will find such stories as Origin of the Pleiades and the Pine, What Became Of the Rabbit, The Rabbit Dines the Bear, The Rabbit Escapes from the Wolves, The Rattlesnake's Vengeance, The Red Man and the Uktena, The Eagle's Revenge, Agan-uni'tsi's Search for the Uktena, The Hunter and Selu, The Snake Boy, The First Fire, The Lost Cherokee and many, many more.

The Cherokee Nation written by Robert J. Conley and has been published by UNM Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-09-06 with History categories.

The Cherokee Nation is one of the largest and most important of all the American Indian tribes. The first history of the Cherokees to appear in over four decades, this is also the first to be endorsed by the tribe and the first to be written by a Cherokee. Robert Conley begins his survey with Cherokee origin myths and legends. He then explores their relations with neighboring Indian groups and European missionaries and settlers. He traces their forced migrations west, relates their participations on both sides of the Civil War and the wars of the twentieth century, and concludes with an examination of Cherokee life today. Conley provides analyses for general readers of all ages to learn the significance of tribal lore and Cherokee tribal law. Following the history is a listing of the Principal Chiefs of the Cherokees with a brief biography of each and separate listings of the chiefs of the Eastern Cherokees and the Western Cherokees. For those who want to know more about Cherokee heritage and history, Conley offers additional reading lists at the end of each chapter.
