Since 1850, when the second edition was issued, an English translation of which has been Widely used in Britain and America, Dr. Kurtz has given great attention to the improvement Of his book. The in crease of size has not been caused by wordy amplification, but by an urgent necessity felt by the author as he used the vast materials that recent years have spread out before the historical student. In 1870 Dr. Kurtz retired from his professorship, and has conscientiously *devoted himself to bring up each successive edition of his text-book to the point reached by the very latest scholarship of his own and other lands. In his Preface to the ninth edition of 1885 he claims to have made very special improvements on the presentation of the history of the first three centuries, where ample use is made of the brilliant researches of Harnack and other distinguished scholars of the day. Excerpt from A History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Vol. 3 Armed with the panoply thus furnished them, the Wesleyan missionaries who first visited our shores were prepared to promulgate and defend the doctrines and to enforce the discipline of their founder. As before said, however, they mainly insisted on experimental and practical godliness, urging upon all, high and low, rich and poor, the necessity of a change of heart, such a change as should be productive of a reformation of life and conduct, in order to insure everlasting salvation. Instead of exhausting their strength in controversial preaching on those debatable points about which they dif fered from Calvinists, Unitarians, Arians, and Universal iste, they generally contented themselves with a plain and unvarnished statement of their doctrinal views, with urging upon the people experimental and practical reli gion, and with defending themselves when assailed by others. This defence, however, often became necessa ry, more especially in the northern and eastern states, where the people were more accustomed to a critical ex amination of doctrinal points, and questions of doubtful disputation. A few passages have been added, chiefly in the notes; a few slightly enlarged. In general, I have not found much, after a period of above twenty years, which I should wish to retract or to modify. Some objection was raised, on the first publication of the work, against the commencement of the History of Christianity with the Life of Christ. I thought then, and still think, that life to be an integral and inseparable part of the History. It appeared to me necessary to the completeness of the History to trace it to its primal origin; to show that the Gospels, our only documentary authorities, offer a clear and distinct relation of that life, with no greater variation than might reasonably be expected from four separate and independent narratives, drawn up by different writers, at different times and places, and by one at least from a different point of view; that this relation accords in every respect with all that we know of the events, circumstances, manners, usages, opinions, of the age and country; that its religious signification, and, in part, supernatural character, in no way conflict, but are, rather, in full and perfect harmony, with its simple truth and reality.
