Excerpt from History of the Cross of Christ The idea of this little book was suggested to the author by perusing cruciana, an interesting work, by John Holland, published in England in 1835. Some of the quotations, and some of the facts embodied in the followmg sketch, were derived from that source. But the plan, execution, uses of the present essay are, in most respects, so different from those of Mr. Hol land's volume, that no further acknowledgment or refer ence to his work seems to be required. The hope of the author in presenting this humble production to the public, is that it may awaken Christian feelings in those who read it, by showing how the Crossof Christ justly appeals to the reason, - t_he imagination, and the heart of a living'believer. Graciana is a collection of miscel laneous information and literature concerning the Cross. J usti Lipsi De Cruce, - a Latin book printed in 1598 is a literal account, with engravings, of the Cross, its various shapes, and its use as an instrument of torture in different countries and times. The present work gives the symbolic history of that now hallowed object - thelessons taught by its fortunes and uses. This field the writer believes to have been hitherto unoccupied; and it seemed to him so capable, that he trusts a sufficient apology will be found in what he has written, for pub lishing it. Excerpt from The Cross of Christ: Studies in the History of Religion and the Inner Life of the Church The cross as "the emblem of Christianity universally," as the symbolic "representation of the one great truth, out of which a multitude of truths may be developed," is only apparently on a level with a number of other religious emblems, the study of which can call forth no interest beyond that of an art-historical or liturgical examination. It may be that a false externalising, specially in the Church of the Middle Ages, has attached itself to the reverence manifested towards the cross. An exact and critical detailing of these superstitious extravagances and mystical playings of the imagination may more than once run the risk of producing a wearying or even repelling effect. Nevertheless there is inherent in this particular sign a stronger power of attraction than in any of the other symbols of Christianity. The externalising and corrupting influence upon the essence and life of our religion proceeding from it, from the time of Constantine and Helena, was followed in the period of the Reformation by a purifying and spiritualising process, which, equally with that process of degeneration, took its point of departure in the original expression of believing and enthusiastic attachment to the symbol of redemption. The Catholic devotion to the Cross, and the Evangelical preaching of the Cross, have their roots in the same soil. Excerpt from The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ: A Complete Critical Examination of the Origin, Contents, and Connection of the Gospels It had been determined in the counsel of God that an honourable burial should be prepared for the deceased Prince of men; and in order to realize this decree, the motives and feelings which actuated the Jews were made to co-operate in the most remarkable manner with the inmost wishes of believers. The Jews could not but feel an urgent desire to have the bodies of the crucified taken down and buried before evening, at which time the Sabbath commenced. It was against the law, in its general terms, to let bodies remain all night upon the tree (Deut. xxi. 22, 23); and in this case there was also the special consideration, that the next day was the Sabbath, and that Sabbath-day was a high day (John xix. 31). They could not bear the thought that the bodies should remain hanging upon the cross during the greatest day of the feast.
