This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1904 edition. Excerpt: ... INTRODUCTION. It is well known that for twenty years I have resisted urgent appeals of surviving comrades to write a history of the First Alabama Regiment. Even now I yield my consent to undertake this sketch only after fully realizing that unless I write it, the regiment will be left without any record, and that it will be better for the regiment to have a poorly written record than none whatever. I am fully aware of my incompetence to do the subject justice; and the insistence of Col. I. G. W. Steedman, the distinguished commander of the regiment during the war, and of Thomas M. Owen, the able and active Director of the Department of Archives and History, are to a large degree responsible for the final appearance of the work. The following personal allusions are necessary in order to gratify the natural desire of readers to know the opportunities I have had by experience and observation for ascertaining the facts and incidents here recorded. I was an original member of the "Perote Guards," organized at Perote, Bullock (then Pike) county, in 1859, and composed mostly of students of the Perote Institute and of young business men of the town; left Perote with the company Feb. 12, 1861, and the next day was mustered into the service of Alabama at Girard by a Captain Thom; was organized with the company into the First Regiment Alabama Volunteers at Barrancas, Fla., about a month later, which regiment, by consent of men and officers, was transferred to the Confederate service about April 1, 1861; remained with the regiment until its surrender with the Army of Tennessee, April 27, 1865, at Greensboro, N. C.; participated in every battle and campaign of the regiment except the march from Lovejoy Station, Ga., to Tuscumbia, Ala., in the fall of...

From inception to the final roll call, this regimental history traces the 11th Regiment of Alabama Volunteers from its 1861 creation to the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. The work follows the 11th Alabama through various battles including Manassas, Fredericksburg, Salem Church and Gettysburg. Drawing on personal correspondence such as letters and diaries, it presents the soldiers as individuals and contributes to the dialogue on why the typical Southern soldier fought in the war. The geographical movement of the regiment throughout the war, its key leaders and the organization of its companies are also discussed in detail. There are 81 period photographs that add to the story of this remarkable unit.

The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Vold Forde, Author What questions would you like to ask your grandmothers, great grandmothers or tenth great grandmothers? In this work, the authors of the "grandmother stories"(Dr. Forde and cousins) imaginatively ask their grandmothers questions about the source of their indomitable spirit; and as you read, you will appreciate the choice. The centerpiece of the book consists of interpretative essays featuring our grandmothers in times of trial and times of joy. The essays are accompanied by descriptive chronologies, with the reader appropriately instructed by maps from each period, photographs, sketches, portraits and recipes. An encyclopedic Appendix in CD-ROM form offers further documentation, extensive genealogies, and even more maps, photographs, and archival materials; all of which will eventually be published as Volume II. The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Vold Forde's valiant work of genealogy presented herein is encyclopedic, intelligible and thoroughly entertaining. Lineages of our scattered kindred so lovingly compiled by her, are a "collection for remembrance" inspired by the faithful lives of ten generations of Southern ancestors. Impressive archival research and background materials on the Bankston, Brooks, Cobb, Hamlin, Henderson, Ivey, Jarrett, Lea, McDonald, Miller, Rambo, and Sappingtons of Georgia lines are included. Within the pages of this book, you will find adventure, love, war, peace, depression, and prosperity in the lives of our valiant colonial, pioneer, antebellum and postbellum ancestors. You may correlate traits of these brave and steadfast women with those in your own mothers, grandmothers, sisters, and daughters. If you seek a greater understanding of your Southern ancestry and of yourself, you will surely find it here.
