Excerpt from History of the Four Conquests of England, Vol. 1 of 2 Though the British people may not, perhaps, be ad mitted by its neighbours to be the greatest of modern nations, it will certainly be allowed to be among the greatest, and the height of power and civilisation to which it has attained must be traced to the circumstances by which its youth was surrounded and disciplined. It is the story of this youth that I have endeavoured to tell in these volumes - to show under what influences it arose and waxed in strength - with what storms of ad versity it had to contend - how with the patience of greatness it braved them all - and how, though beaten down and bent, it was never broken, but rising again gradually, recovered its erect attitude, towering higher and higher after every fall, until, at length, it came to constitute the acme of political communities, the model and exemplar after which other free states have been proud to fashion themselves. Excerpt from History of the Four Conquest of England, Vol. 2 of 2 Over Ethelred's amatory achievements the Chroniclers have, in many instances, drawn a veil, though not so thick as entirely to conceal their character. He now, in A.D. 1002, conceived the idea of strengthening himself against his enemies by contracting an alliance with a Norman princess. All the steps he had previously taken might have been retrieved - he might have listened to wiser counsellors -superior armies and fleets might have been organised and equipped the nation might have roused itself from its lethargy, and shaken off the northern incubus; but, by intermarrying with a daughter of the Vikings recently established in France, he enlarged the range of pretensions to the English throne, and prepared the way for the Battle of Hastings. It may doubtless be said for him that he was at his wits end - no great way to travel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The History of the Norman Conquest of England, Vol. 4: Its Causes and Its Results The present volume contains the reign of Wil liam. I regret that the bulk to which the text has swelled has caused me to leave out several notes which were designed to have a place in the Appendix; but I believe that their substance will find a place as least as fitting among the more general disquisitions which I hope to give in the fifth volume. Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England, Vol. 4 of 6: From the Norman Conquest James received the Danish ambassadors who brought this civil offer at Dunfermline, but advised them instantly to depart from St. Andrew's, as the plague was raging in the palace: he said he would send his own horses to carry them thither. An unfortunate misunderstanding oc curred, for the Danish ambassadors, having sent on their own horses and baggage, and finding the promised escort did not arrive, actually left Dunfermline on foot. James was in consternation when he found the neglect that his perverse and disobedient people had put Upon the envoys of his courteous ally. This was the more tobe regretted, since king Frederic had ordered the Danish embassy, in case king James was not eager for the marriage, to demand restitution of the Orkney and Shet land isles, which were the rightful property of Denmark. J ames's mar riage was at this juncture an object of interest and contention between his mother, the captive Mary queen of Scots, and his godmother queen Elizabeth. The views of these queens were, of course, in direct contra diction to each other. Mary wished her son to offer his hand to one of the daughters of Philip king of Spain, by Elizabeth of France, her early friend. The queen of England insisted on his marriage with the princess of Sweden, grand-daughter of Gustavus Vasa, and a Protestant; if he accepted this offer, Elizabeth declared she would be at the whole expense of the wedding. The Scottish government were more inclined to the Danish alliance than any other; but Mary queen of Scots, who hoped to see her son marry a Roman catholic of her recommendation, opposed his marriage with either of the northern princesses, under the plea that their fathers, being but elected to their dignities, were not of equal rank with hereditary monarchs.l The Scotch government, however, did not relish the idea of a naval war with the powerful king of Denmark for the possession of the Orkneys: they had, as well, a shrewd idea that his daughter would have a rich tocher, and therefore sent Peter Young, the king's old schoolmaster, to inquire all needful particulars in Denmark. Excerpt from A New History of Great Britain: From the Roman Conquest to the Outbreak of the Great War Green, like every one else who tries to compress the story of England into one volume, had to take a selective view; for instance, he emphasized, in some centuries, literary history, in others, social. There are many gaps in his narrative, 'due to the imperative need of compres sion; and to these gaps we owe his singularly full treat ment of other parts of our history. The Short History was not a complete statement it was not meant to be such; but it is the account of what struck a man who possessed both knowledge and genius, as being the most important aspects of English History. Excerpt from England Before the Norman Conquest: Being a History of the Celtic, Roman and Anglo-Saxon Periods Down to the Year A. D. 1066 HE main purpose of this short preface is to express my deep Obligation to many friends who have given me their assistance in revising and correcting Various parts of this volume. Three must be specially named. Mr. T. Rice Holmes, the author of Caesar's Conquest of Gaul, and of Ancient Britain and Caesar's Invasions, was good enough to look through the first four chapters, forming the prehistoric and early Celtic section, to make most valuable criticisms thereon, and to give me many fruitful suggestions. This part of my volume, indeed, may be said to be founded in a large measure on his researches, for his two books above mentioned were invaluable to me.
