Excerpt from History of the Fourteenth Regiment Alabama Vols: With a List of the Names of Every Man That Ever Belonged to the Regiment In presenting this work to the public, I deem it unnecessary to at tempt an explanation of the causes of the war. Suffice it to say, 't'nat the thunder concealed in the cloud which, for over fifty years, dark ened our political horizon, burst forth on Fort Sumter, on the 11th day of April, 1661. This victory w the rebels hastened preparations in all the seceded States to meet the Union army on the border. When the first demand Was made for volunteers, (so eager was the South to show to the North and to the world, that they intended to be free, ) that it was a race to Montgomery, then-the Confederate Capitol, to be received first. About the let of August, 1861, the 14th Alabama Regi ment rendezvoused at Auburn, Alabama, and organized as follows. History of the Fourteenth Regiment Alabama Volunteers is unique among regimental histories as it was written and published during the Civil War.Here are the names of those who fought so gallantly that but a few remained to surrender their flag at Appomatox. Dogged by measles, smallpox, hunger, and fatigue they valiantly fought the major battles of Virginia and Maryland. Their heroics once again live on these pages.

Defend This Old Town is a riveting war epic of local scale and human dimensions. Taking its title from the cry raised in Williamsburg as the Federal army approached in 1862, Carol Dubbs's narrative sweeps us into the lives of residents of this small historic city from the secession of Virginia in 1861 to Lee's surrender four years later. Williamsburg's Civil War ordeal has never before been told in such depth. Located midway on the only land route between Richmond and the Union-held Fort Monroe, on the tip of the Virginia Peninsula, Williamsburg hosted Confederate troops for the first year of war while defensive earthworks were built across the area. After the Battle of Williamsburg on May 5, 1862 -- a bloody clash neither side sought but each claimed as victor -- Union forces began an occupation of the town that lasted with only short interruptions until the end of the war. Those residents who had not fled remained to stubbornly defend their homes. Dubbs scripts a compelling chronicle of these events, interweaving quotes from diaries, letters, memoirs, and military memoranda to bring immediacy to her subject. Balancing the grim experiences of combat, shortages, tending the dead and wounded, the college's burning, restive servants, typhoid breakout, and isolation from the rest of the Confederacy are some lighter interludes: the Union marshal who arrived with his saddlebags packed with shoes and dresses to win the good opinion of the town's females; the first taste of freedom for blacks; and the issuance of travel passes -- including one to an especially sharp-tongued matron, with the order never to return. Maps, period photographs, order of battle, and a bibliography complete this substantial, comprehensive, and entertaining work. Defend This Old Town is certain to engage anyone who enjoys good history.

Extraordinary Circumstances written by Brian K. Burton and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-09-05 with History categories.

A detailed history of the American Civil War’s first campaign in Virginia in 1862. The first campaign in the Civil War in which Robert E. Lee led the Army of Northern Virginia, the Seven Days Battles were fought southeast of the Confederate capital of Richmond in the summer of 1862. Lee and his fellow officers, including “Stonewall” Jackson, James Longstreet, A. P. Hill, and D. H. Hill, pushed George B. McClellan’s Army of the Potomac from the gates of Richmond to the James River, where the Union forces reached safety. Along the way, Lee lost several opportunities to harm McClellan. The Seven Days have been the subject of numerous historical treatments, but none more detailed and engaging than Brian K. Burton’s retelling of the campaign that lifted Southern spirits, began Lee’s ascent to fame, and almost prompted European recognition of the Confederacy. “A thoroughly researched and well-written volume that will surely be the starting point for those interested in this particular campaign.” —Journal of American History “A welcome addition to scholarship that should be the standard work on its subject for some time to come.” —Journal of Military History “Plenty of good maps . . . help the reader follow the course of the campaign. . . . Burton does not neglect the role of the common soldiers . . . [and]provides thorough and reasonable analyses of the commanders on both sides.” —Georgia Historical Quarterly “A full and measured account marked by a clear narrative and an interesting strategy of alternating the testimony of generals with their grand plans and the foot soldiers who had to move, shoot, and communicate in the smokey underbrush.” —The Virginia Magazine
