Excerpt from History of the Gems Found in North Carolina North Carolina, with its magnificent mountains and its swiftly running rivers and streams, has now for some years come to possess almost as great a charm for the Northern as it long before had for the Southern tourist. The land of the Sky has become a favorite resort for the traveler, the invalid, the sportsman, the lover of nature, and the seeker for rest, from almost every part of the country. For the mineralogist, too, it has peculiar interest, so great, indeed, that its scenic attractions have, for such as he, been almost overmatched, not to say overlooked, in the search for the beautiful crystals that are found in its mountains, and the variety of rare, minute, and interesting minerals that occur in the brooks and streams associated with gold. Among these crystals and sands occur many minerals that have yielded true gems, and North Carolina has hence become one of the most notable States for gem pro duction in the American Union. The finding of these minerals, however, has been in most cases a secondary or incidental result in the search for and mining of substances more immediately desired for practical use on a larger scale. These last have been essentially three, which have developed in succession, and mark several stages in the mineral production of North Carolina. Excerpt from Gems and Precious Stones of North America: A Popular Description of Their Occurrence, Value, History, Archaeology, and of the Collections in Which They Exist, Also a Chapter on Pearls and on Remarkable Foreign Gems Owned in the United States The daily yield from the coal and iron mines, or from the South African diamond mines, or a week's yield of the granite quarries, would exceed in value the entire output of precious stones found in the United States during a year. Systematic search for gems and precious stones has been carried on in only two States Maine and North Carolina. Otherwise, the gems are found accidentally, in connection with other substances that are being mined, or in small veins which are only occasionally met with, as the turquoise in Mexico. They are often gathered on the surface, as is the case with garnet or olivine from Arizona and New Mexico; or in sluicing for gold, as the sapphires from Montana; or in connection with mica mining, as the beryl from Connecticut and North Carolina; or from the beds of streams and decomposing rocks, as the moss-agate from Wyoming; or on the beaches, as the agate, chlorastrolite, and thomsonite from the shores of Lake Superior. Excerpt from History of North Carolina, Vol. 1: With Maps and IllustrationsIn entering upon his work, the writer avails himself of the opportunity briefly to explain his proposed plan, as in some of its features, it departs from established historical models. A mere chronologically accurate narrative of important public events does not in his view constitute history; though of it, such a narrative properly forms a part. He has supposed that the real history of a State is to be read in the gradual progress of its peo ple in intelligence, refinement, industry, wealth, taste, civilization, &c. The public events that transpire are but the exponents of the condition of the inhabitants, in these and other particulars.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Search for the Cittie of Ralegh: Archeological Excavations at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, North Carolina In 1583, Sir Humphrey Gilbert, half-brother of Sir Walter Raleigh, staked all that he had in an attempt to found a colony in the northern part of North America. But the venture was not successful, and he himself was drowned on the return voyage to England. The next year, Sir Walter Raleigh, favorite of Queen Elizabeth, received from the Queen a charter for western discovery and colonization. Imbued with a desire to realize his brother's dream of an English Empire in America, Raleigh sent Captains Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to America in 1584 to select a site for a colony. They explored the North Carolina coast, including Roanoke Island, and returned with a favorable report on the latter-named place, which they described as a most pleasant and fertile ground. In honor of Queen Elizabeth, the Virgin Queen, the whole country was named Virginia. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
