Excerpt from The Settlement of the Jews: In North America More than twenty years have now elapsed since Judge Daly's work was first presented to the public, yet I feel that no excuse or apology is necessary for its re-publication to-day. Mr. Daly, then Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas of this city, originally prepared the work in the form of an address delivered at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Hebrew Benevolent Society of New York, on April 11, 1872, and then enlarged it for publication in The Jewish Times of that year. Subsequently, the accomplished and erudite author utilized a portion of the same data in an address delivered at the laying of the corner-stone of the new Hebrew Orphau Asylum, New York, May 17, 1883. It seems to me that the work has not lost the smallest element of interest since that time, but, on the contrary, appeals to-day to a much larger public than then, and, as, unfortunately, it did not appear in durable form, will seem to be new to the large majority of its readers of to-day. Excerpt from The Jews in America: A Short Story of Their Part in the Building of the Republic, Commemorating the Two Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of Their Settlement Oliver Wendell Holmens in his "Over The Teacups," says: "If the creeds of mankind would try to understand each other before attempting mutual extermination, they would be sure to find a meaning in beliefs which are different from their own." Christians have many things in common with the Jews. We can readily agree with Lessing, when he makes the Christian monk say to the Jewish Nathan: Heaven bless us! That which makes me to you a Christian Makes you to me a Jew. It was said of Sydney Smith that he would not read a book which he was to review, - reading it might prejudice his judgement. When Charles Lamb was berating an enemy, some one said to him, "Why, you don't know him." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of the Jews, Vol. 6 With the Index Volume, the yewis/z Pa /z'mfz'on Society ofamw/z'ca brings to a close the American edition of the History of the Jews by Professor H. Graetz. A glance at the title-page and the table of contents will show, that the celebrated historian cannot be held directly responsible for anything this volume contains. The History proper, as abridged under the direction of the author and translated into English from the eleven volume German edition, is complete in five volumes. In compiling this additional volume, the Publication Committee was prompted by the desire to render the work readily available for pedagogical purposes. To be of value to the general reader as well as to the scholar, a work containing upwards of three thousand pages needs to be equipped with indexes, tables, and helps of various kinds. The student, or reader, will easily be able to discover the mode of Israel's adventure during the sublimest epoch in the world's history and, subsequently, will readily discern the enigmatic tangles which are creating Jewish problems upon every continent. Besides, the general public will find in this work useful facts about a misunderstood class which seems to be struggling upon the waves of Time without interruption, and a mutual benefit is, therefore, inevitable. This work is divided into three parts, treating practically three different subjects, but without knowing the first two the main object in view, in issuing this work, would have been futile. Excerpt from Four Years of Relief and War Work by the Jews of America, 1914-1918: A Chronological Review Many other phases of this great work are not recorded here, not because they are unknown, but because the details have not yet reached me. This is an explanation of the omissions of many facts and portraits which are not included in this book. This is not a history, but only a record of the facts that have come under my personal knowledge and in which I had the honor to participate.
