This book, Prof. H.C. Raychaudhuri as a Historian, is a milestone in the field of Indian historiography. Prof. H.C. Raychaudhuri was a distinguished scholar and academician. His Political History of Ancient India has deserved commendation from the students and scholars of India and abroad. He had reconstructed the history of ancient India through his thorough research. He had given a toe challenge to the colonial historiography. The most neglected aspect of Indian History was the historical geography which Prof. Raychaudhuri analysed vividly and opened new horizons for the scholars of the land to pursue further research in this field. His critical analysis on Indian religion, particularly on Vaishnavism, has earned him immortal fame. For his erudition, he became the member of many learned societies of India including Indian History Congress and served in various capacities contributing in his own way to the growth of knowledge. This book, revealing the contributions of Prof. H.C. Raychaudhuri to the historiography of India, will be indispensable for the students and teachers of Indian historiography. Salient Features (i) Objectivity is the forte of the book. This objective analysis is however done in an intimitably lucid style that makes this book irresistably readable. (ii) Welcome light has been thrown on the virgin topics which had been taken up by Prof. Raychaudhuri for analysis. (iii) It is a treasure-house for any student or teacher of Historiography and Indology. (iv) The works of a 'first class mind' have been evaluated with a critical and analytical manner. (v) A clear picture of India' s rich cultural heritage of the past has been projected through the analysis of the works of Prof. Raychaudhuri. (Vi) A peep into the pages of the book will acquaint the readers with the profound scholarship of Prof. H.C. Raychaudhuri as a historian.

Tamil Brahmans written by C. J. Fuller and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-03 with History categories.

The Tamil Brahmans were a traditional, mainly rural, high-caste elite who have been transformed into a modern, urban, middle-class community since the late nineteenth century. Many Tamil Brahmans today are in professional and managerial occupations, such as engineering and information technology; most of them live in Chennai and other Tamilnadu towns, but others have migrated to the rest of India and overseas. This book, which is mainly based on the authors ethnographic research, describes and analyses this transformation. It is also a study of how and why the Tamil Brahmans privileged status within a hierarchical society has been perpetuated in the face of both a strong anti-Brahman movement in Tamilnadu, and a series of wider social, cultural, economic, political, and ideological changes that might have been expected to undermine their position completely. The major topics discussed include Brahman rural society, urban migration and urban ways of life, education and employment, the position of women, and religion and culture. The Tamil Brahmans class position, including the internal division into the upper- and lower-middle classes, and the process of class reproduction, are examined closely to analyze the congruence between Tamil Brahmanhood and middle classness, which as comparison with other Brahman and non-Brahman groups shows is highly unusual in contemporary India."

Conversion To Modernities written by Peter van der Veer and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-14 with Social Science categories.

Peter van der Veer has gathered together a groundbreaking collection of essays that suggests that conversion to forms of Christianity in the modern period is not only a conversion to modern forms of these religions, but also to religious forms of modernity. Religious perceptions of the self, of community, and of the state are transformed when Western discourses of modernity become dominant in the modern world. This volume seeks to relate Europe and its Others by exploring conversion both in modern Europe and in the colonized world.

British Columbia is Canada’s most ethnically diverse province. Yet in general we need to know more about the diversity of religions that accompanied immigrants to the province and how they are practised today. This book offers intimate portraits of local religious groups, including Hindus and Sikhs from South Asia; Buddhist organizations from Southeast Asia; and Tibetan, Japanese, and Chinese religions from East and Central Asia. The first comprehensive, comparative examination of Asian religions in British Columbia, this book is mandatory reading for teachers, policy makers, scholars of local history and culture and of Asian Canadian studies.
