Williams (b. 1847?) was a writer in Liverpool, but apparently not a very successful one. This history, published in 1897 by William Heinemann in London and Edward Howell in Liverpool, seems to be his only published book. The slave trade at the port in western England had been abolished nearly a century before he wrote, but the privateering continued and had recently surged during the US Civil War. Covering first the former then the latter, he recounts the histories of the trades through particular people and periods. Several fold-out pages reproduce original documents. David Eltis (history, Emory U.) provides an introduction. Distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).

Excerpt from History of the Liverpool Privateers and Letters of Marque: With an Account of the Liverpool Slave Trade In dealing with the delicate subject of the Liverpool Slave Trade - a subject which, for reasons that may be guessed, has been lightly touched upon by most local writers - the author has endeavoured to confine himself to a plain statement of facts - facts which need no comment or exposition. He has directed his indignation against the system, or national sin, rather than against individuals, for many of the slave merchants and slave-captains of old Liverpool claim our regard as patriots and worthies of no common order. Though we are on the threshold of the Twentieth Century, with its tremendous possibilities, there are indications that white men still exist who would gladly revert to the iniquitous system of a bygone age, and enslave the African in his own land. If anything in this book should help to awaken the public conscience to jealously watch that under no specious pretext shall the bodies and souls of African labourers be again handed over to the tender mercies of greedy and unscrupulous adventurers, the author will rejoice. Exploring notions of history, collective memory, cultural memory, public memory, official memory, and public history, Slavery in the Age of Memory: Engaging the Past explains how ordinary citizens, social groups, governments and institutions engage with the past of slavery and the Atlantic slave trade. It illuminates how and why over the last five decades the debates about slavery have become so relevant in the societies where slavery existed and which participated in the Atlantic slave trade. The book draws on a variety of case studies to investigate its central questions. How have social actors and groups in Europe, Africa and the Americas engaged with the slave past of their societies? Are there are any relations between the demands to rename streets of Liverpool in England and the protests to take down Confederate monuments in the United States? How have black and white social actors and scholars influenced the ways slavery is represented in George Washington's Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson's Monticello in the United States? How do slave cemeteries in Brazil and the United States and the walls of names of Whitney Plantation speak to other initiatives honoring enslaved people in England and South Africa? What shared problems and goals have led to the creation of the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool and the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC? Why have artists used their works to confront the debates about slavery and its legacies? The important debates addressed in this book resonate in the present day. Arguing that memory of slavery is racialized and gendered, the book shows that more than just attempts to come to terms with the past, debates about slavery are associated with the persistent racial inequalities, racism, and white supremacy which still shape societies where slavery existed. Slavery in the Age of Memory: Engaging the Past is thus a vital resource for students and scholars of the Atlantic world, the history of slavery and public history.

The Persistence Of Memory written by Jessica Moody and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with History categories.

The Persistence of Memory is a history of the public memory of transatlantic slavery in the largest slave-trading port city in Europe, from the end of the 18th century into the 21st century; from history to memory. Mapping this public memory over more than two centuries reveals the ways in which dissonant pasts, rather than being 'forgotten histories', persist over time as a contested public debate. This public memory, intimately intertwined with constructions of 'place' and 'identity', has been shaped by legacies of transatlantic slavery itself, as well as other events, contexts and phenomena along its trajectory, revealing the ways in which current narratives and debate around difficult histories have histories of their own. By the 21st century, Liverpool, once the 'slaving capital of the world', had more permanent and long-lasting memory work relating to transatlantic slavery than any other British city. The long history of how Liverpool, home to Britain's oldest continuous black presence, has publicly 'remembered' its own slaving past, how this has changed over time and why, is of central significance and relevance to current and ongoing efforts to face contested histories, particularly those surrounding race, slavery and empire.
