Excerpt from Ninth Cavalry: One Hundred and Twenty-First Regiment, Indiana Volunteers The paper by A. Brown, corporal Co. L, on Sulphur Branch Trestle, appears as written by him, without a verbal change. The other paper upon the same subject is made up of accounts furnished by Col. Lilly and Capt. B. Harrod, Co. 13. While the writer assisted in making up the detail sent upon that unfortunate expedition, it was not his fortune to go with it. Excerpt from History of the Thirty-Seventh Regiment of Indiana Infantry Volunteers: Its Organization, Campaigns, and Battles Sept;, '61 Oct;, '64 Comrades of the Thirty-seventh Indiana Regiment, and all friends of that Regiment into whose hands this little volume may fall, permit me to assure you that I know full well that this little work which I dignify with the name "history" does not do you or that grand old Regiment even partial justice. A complete history of all that you did, dared, endured and sacrificed in crushing the rebellion, and preserving for posterity the Government, purchased with the blood of Revolutionary fathers, will never be written. Mo man or number of men now living can do that. I am also confident that many of my comrades could have written a better history than this, but that duty was not imposed upon them. No doubt this history should contain many things which it does not; but I trust that it contains nothing that it should not. I have tried to write a history of the Thirty-seventh Regiment, and to exclude from it every word that might be offensive to any comrade. The effort throughout has been to state, without ornamentation or exaggeration, as many plain and important facts as possible without partiality to any Company or person.
