The Short family is of Scotch-Irish descent, supposedly coming from southwest Scotland. The Shorts lived in Virginia for nearly 200 years (1639-1829). They first settled in the Rappahannock River valley and then in the Shenandoah River valley. In 1834 the first Short family moved to central Illinois. William Shorte is first mentioned in 1639 in Surry County, Virginia. He had a son, Thomas, who married a widow, Ann R. Landrum. Descendants and relatives lived in Virginia, Illinois, Ohio, Florida, and elsewhere.
