In its early days, Washington County was a diverse area that attracted many settlers who were eager to set up homesteads and farm the land. When Arkansas became a state in 1836, the county led the way in education and was a prosperous place to live and work. This volume explores the lives of several generations of early residents and the ways in which they survived in some of the most rugged country west of the Mississippi. The photographs in this collection, many of which date back to the late 1880s, serve as priceless reminders of the real-life stories of early Ozark homesteaders. Enhanced by an informative and entertaining text, these vintage snapshots also provide the reader with views of early organizations such as the Young Americans and the Home Demonstration Clubs, and political groups such as the local "petticoat government," which was touted as the first of its kind. In Washington County, Arkansas, you will discover the area's plentiful apple orchards and strawberry fields, its sawmills and gristmills, and its canneries and prosperous businesses along the railroad line. Rare scenes of local reunions, river baptisms, singing schools, parties, and county fairs are also brought to life within these pages.

Washington County Arkansas Sheriff S Census For 1865 written by Nancy Maxwell and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with History categories.

"The 1865 sheriff's census of Washington County, Arkansas, is the only county census known to exist from this enumeration. Its importance lies in having been taken just nine months after the end of the Civil War when the county was still recovering from major loss of life and property." Destruction of homes, schools, farms, and businesses, and confiscation of livestock and crops was wrought by both Union and Confederate forces. Washington County's 442 claims for personal property reimbursement filed with the Southern Claims Commission after the war were by far the greatest number of any Arkansas county. The war took a heavy toll on the county population which was down by 9,000 from the 1860 federal census. The census contains names, age groupings, and groupings by gender for white persons; free persons of color are identified only by name and gender. The census is arranged chronologically and includes names of several (but not all) townships: Clear Creek, Elm Spring, Mars Hill, Illinois, Vineyard, Cove Creek, Mountain, West Fork, White River, Richland, Prairie, and the city of Fayetteville. Cane Hill and Brush Creek Townships are not named, even though they existed when the census was taken. This book may enable researchers with roots in northwest Arkansas to identify their ancestors who first appeared or who had remained in Washington County during the difficult years of 1861 through 1865. Agricultural statistics are on the microfilm from which this information was copied, but are not included in this book.

From the 1890s through the 1920s, the postcard was an extraordinarily popular means of communication, and many of the postcards produced during this "golden age" can today be considered works of art. At the turn of the century, the northwest corner of Arkansas was a remote region of small towns and farms. Today, Washington and Benton Counties are among the nation's most rapidly growing metropolitan areas. This book captures sixty years of that evolution (1900-1960) in more than two hundred carefully selected postcard images. The postcards, enhanced by the actual words penned by the senders, are accompanied by extensively researched facts that bring to life both the images and the history of the region.

471 pages with 110 total maps Locating original landowners in maps has never been an easy task-until now. This volume in the Family Maps series contains newly created maps of original landowners (patent maps) in what is now Washington County, Arkansas, gleaned from the indexes of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. But it offers much more than that. For each township in the county, there are two additional maps accompanying the patent map: a road map and a map showing waterways, railroads, and both modern and many historical city-centers and cemeteries. Included are indexes to help you locate what you are looking for, whether you know a person's name, a last name, a place-name, or a cemetery. The combination of maps and indexes are designed to aid researchers of American history or genealogy to explore frontier neighborhoods, examine family migrations, locate hard-to-find cemeteries and towns, as well as locate land based on legal descriptions found in old documents or deeds. The patent-maps are essentially plat maps but instead of depicting owners for a particular year, these maps show original landowners, no matter when the transfer from the federal government was completed. Dates of patents typically begin near the time of statehood and run into the early 1900s. What's Mapped in this book (that you'll not likely find elsewhere) . . . 10022 Parcels of Land (with original landowner names and patent-dates labeled in the relevant map) 100 Cemeteries plus . . . Roads, and existing Rivers, Creeks, Streams, Railroads, and Small-towns (including some historical), etc. What YEARS are these maps for?
