Why was Hitler able to obtain and hold the dictatorship in Germany? What are the real thoughts of this German people which has puzzled the world so frequently? In answer to these vital questions, Leonhard Guenther (pseud.), a native-born German doctor of philosophy and jurisprudence who emigrated to America for permanent residence, presents in A German Ace Tells Why. It contains the authentic diary entries (May 22, 1915 - September 3, 1939) of a high-ranking officer of the German Luftwaffe, who, at the time of first publication in 1942 was still in Germany. The original diary has been condensed and the author’s own experiences have been added. The picture thus obtained shows both the articulate and subconscious sentiments of the typical German of the better class. “This brief but eloquent chronicle of the development of political thinking in the mind of a typical educated German during the period between the First World War and the attack by Germany upon Poland seems to me of great value to every thoughtful American. [...] The author, an ardent lover of American democracy, gives us a picture of Germany that should become a significant element in American thinking about the new order which must follow the victory of the democracies.”—FREDERICK MAY ELIOT, Foreword

Originally published in 1941, the blurb read: "The aim of this work is to state and understand the psychological dynamics of the present conflict. The author is a medical psychologist who has had unusual opportunities for studying German mentality. He characterizes the condition of Germany as one of dæmonic possession and Hitler as the primitive medicine-man who gained a magical ascendency by playing the role of medium to the German unconscious. He analyses the fundamental instability of the collective German psychology and relates this to the dæmonic outbreak. The ambiguous personality of the Führer is seen as the indispensable symbol of a deeply divided nation striving for unity. Whereas the pagan-Christian conflict in the soul of Christendom is urging individual consciousness to a new statement of human values, it has produced in the soul of Germany a state of collective intoxication which is the negation of individuality. This book is the first serious attempt to depict the invisible underground causes of the European catastrophe and to state the issue in terms of epochal transition. It was German violence which started the conflagration, but the fires of anti-Christian revolt have long been smouldering in the general unconscious. Material of a varied kind, gathered from German myth and legend and from a number of contemporary witnesses has been pieced together into a comprehensive psychological survey, embracing both the personal and the impersonal aspects of the German scene. Hitler is discussed as personality, as symbol, and as a disease. The influence of the Wagnerian German myth upon Hitler’s inflammable imagination is discussed and the basic ideas of Hitlerism are traced to their source. This is the attempt of psychology to elucidate the irrational and unintelligible elements in the present chaos."

First published in 1999, what the confrontation between democracies and Hitlerism tells us about democracy is the subject of this book. It examines the response of political democracies to the phenomenon of Hitlerism, beginning with democracy in Germany itself in the ’20’s and ’30’s, and ending up with Britain and the U.S. in the ’40’s. Contrary to mythology, this response was far more a failure than a success. An iconoclastic treatment, it anticipates the crises of the future..

HITLER AND I by OTTO STRASSER CONTENTS: INTRODUCTION PREFACE TO THE ENGLISH EDITION MY FIRST MEETING WITH HITLER THE GERMAN CAULDRON THE CONSPIRATORS OF THE BURGERBRAU HITLER WRITES MM KAMPF THE MAN HITLER HITLERISM VERSUS STRASSERISM OPEN COMBAT THROUGH TREASON TO POWER THE GESTAPO ON MY HEELS THE GERMAN BLOODBATH HITLER, MASTER OF EUROPE THE FUTURE AGAINST HITLER PREFACE TO THE ENGLISH EDITION IN the early morning of November 9th, 1939, the world was startled by the report of an attempt on Hitlers life, the occasion being the traditional reunion in the Burger braukeller of Munich. Responsibility was laid by the Nazi propagandists at my door, as Leader of the Black Front, and at that of the British Secret Service. Such accusations are not worth answering. The incident had quite another significance: it was the signal for the opening of the second phase of Hitlers war. The first phase was the Polish campaign, which Hitler and his General Staff regarded as a mere police action, to be accompanied by a peace offensive against the Western powers. It was the unexpected failure of this offensive that determined Hitler to end the war in the West by a lightning victory. In this war he has one objective: to destroy the power of Britain. France is a secondary consideration, like Belgium important only as a jumpingoff ground. But to bring Britain to her knees there must be an effective blockade, to be followed by the landing of troops and crowned by a peace dictated from Buckingham Palace. Peace with France would follow as a natural consequence, and Hitler, as Emperor of Europe, would have reached the first stage towards world domination. To secure the submarine and air bases essential for this twofold military and economic attack upon Britain, Hitler decided upon the invasion of Holland. He reckoned on no great military outlay, and was confident that Belgium would remain neutral, thus preventing effective Allied assistance. The invasion was planned for November 12th, 1939, and the Munich explosion was arranged a day or two earlier for the purpose of arousing public opinion against perfidious Albion. It was thanks to the diplomacy of the Western powers, and to an even greater extent to her own enlightened selfinterest, that on November nth and isth Belgium announced that in the event of an invasion she would fight at the side of Holland, thus opening the way for Allied assistance to the Low Countries. The plan for a minor war therefore had to be abandoned. Instead a major war had to be undertaken, and this neces sarily demanded several months preparation. The first step was the invasion of Denmark and Norway, to secure the eastern seaboard of the North Sea and to protect northern Germany from a British counteroffensive.
