Overfishing written by Ray Hilborn and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-04-06 with Science categories.

Over the past twenty years considerable public attention has been focused on the decline of marine fisheries, the sustainability of world fish production, and the impacts of fishing on marine ecosystems. Many have voiced their concerns about marine conservation, as well as the sustainable and ethical consumption of fish. But are fisheries in danger of collapse? Will we soon need to find ways to replace this food system? Should we be worried that we could be fishing certain species to extinction? Can commercial fishing be carried out in a sustainable way? While overblown prognoses concerning the dire state of fisheries are plentiful, clear scientific explanations of the basic issues surrounding overfishing are less so - and there remains great confusion about the actual amount of overfishing and its ecological impact. Overfishing: What Everyone Needs to Know® will provide a balanced explanation of the broad issues associated with overfishing. Guiding readers through the scientific, political, economic, and ethical issues associated with harvesting fish from the ocean, it will provide answers to questions about which fisheries are sustainably managed and which are not. Ray and Ulrike Hilborn address topics including historical overfishing, high seas fisheries, recreational fisheries, illegal fishing, climate and fisheries, trawling, economic and biological overfishing, and marine protected areas. In order to illustrate the effects of each of these issues, they will incorporate case studies of different species of fish. Overall, the authors present a hopeful view of the future of fisheries. Most of the world's fisheries are not overfished, and many once overfished stocks are now rebuilding. In fact, we can learn from the management failures and successes to ensure that fisheries are sustainable and contribute to national wealth and food security. Concise and clear, this book presents a compelling "big picture" of the state of oceans and the solutions to ending overfishing. Conservation On The High Seas written by Simone Borg and has been published by Edward Elgar Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-01 with Nature categories.

ïThis book from Simone Borg is a much needed and highly recommended study on conservation on the high seas and harmonizing international regimes for the sustainable use of living resources. This publication is very topical considering the continuous over-exploitation of the living resources. It is a very exhaustive study of many international instruments, the most importantly the 1982 The United Nations Law of the Sea Convention. The author in an admirable manner linked the issue of the conservation of living resources on the high seas to the fundamental principles underlying modern environmental law such as the precautionary principle. The unique feature which sets this book apart from the other similar publications is that it is firmly entrenched in general international law, i.e. deals in a very erudite manner with the issues of fragmentation and harmonisation of international law in the context of conservation. This book will appeal not only to the experts on the law of the sea, but also to general international lawyers.Í _ Malgosia Fitzmaurice, Queen Mary, University of London, UK ïThis is an excellent book, which has taken apart a very complicated part of international law, and reassembled it in a manner which is up-to-date, accessible, insightful and coherent. In doing so, this work plugs a gap in the scholarship in this area, for which the author is to be truly commended. It is an essential addition for all practitioners, scholars and students who work or study, in one of the foremost environmental challenges of the 21st century: conservation on the high seas.Í _ Alexander Gillepsie, University of Waikato, New Zealand ïThe conservation of living marine resources with diverse characteristics and life styles has become an international concern. BorgÍs book provides an examination of the regulatory and legal implications of marine conservation. The analysis takes account of UNCLOS Treaties and the UNCED (1992) that aid a more holistic response by States towards conservation, the marine environment and socio-economic needs. Despite shortcomings and failures there have been success stories that highlight the potential of effective interaction between fisheries law and environmental law. The book addresses the legal aspects of international regimes aimed at setting conservation obligations, compliance and enforcement. This is a path breaking work that shows how international law can diversify itself into different legal streams to ensure flexibility and a degree of adaptation to the different interests of the States involved.Í _ John McEldowney, University of Warwick, UK This timely book discusses various international norms that qualify the right, which all states have to access and exploit living resources in marine areas beyond national jurisdiction, in order to promote the conservation of such species. An intricate body of norms has accumulated over the last few decades, consisting of prior and subsequent rules addressing the same issues, as well as a number of specialized rules that supplement more general ones. However, this process has also exposed the fragmentation of the relevant international regimes, with evolving and diverse interpretations of the same legal terms fine-tuning or qualifying earlier treaties. Uncertainty prevails as to how these norms interrelate with each other. The book assesses to what extent the harmonization of these international regimes is possible. It highlights current trends and developments which aim at better coherence, and discusses legal techniques that could serve to harmonize both the objectives of these international norms and their scope of applicability. The author also demonstrates that in some cases, gaps and conflicts in the existing legal framework cannot be simply ïinterpreted awayÍ but require the further development of international law in order to be resolved properly. This unique book will appeal to academics and students in international law, especially those researching marine conservation and the applicable legal framework. It will be equally useful to organizations both public and private with an interest in marine conservation beyond national jurisdiction. Environmental groups and policy-makers in maritime affairs, environmental issues and fisheries management will also find much to interest them in this insightful book.

free from any of the overtones that often constrain professional fisheries meetings. The present volume is the result. This volume aims to be useful as an appraisal of the state of the art by a mixed collection of insiders and outsiders. Most interestingly, I think, it aims (especially in the four group reports) to identify some of the major areas of unresolved controversy and some of the major questions yet unanswered. I see the book as essentially a tentative statement - often by several dissonant voices - about directions in which we may be heading; the book is emphatically not a canonical utterance on how to do things. It is intended to stimulate, not to codify. Following the usual Dahlem Workshop format, the discussions were organized under four themes. Although crisp demarcation is not possible, the first two themes broadly deal with biological aspects of the dynamics of single populations and the dynamics of systems with many species. The later two themes take up questions of management under uncertainty and multispecies management. In all this, the word "fish" is interpreted broadly to include such taxonomically varied beasts as whales, shrimp, crabs, shellfish, and squid, along with fish in a strictly zoological sense.

Although the United States and other affluent nations havemore than an adequate food supply, other nations daily facethe specter of starvation. The world now has a critical population/food dilemma of potentially major proportions. Production fromthe sea and the land is not keeping pace with a world populationthat is doubling every thirty-five years. Unless this age-oldMalthusian problem is solved, millions face starvation and ultimatelydeath. The situation has stimulated substantial international interestin the sea as a source of food and raw materials. The potentialof the sea-not as a panacea, but as an important source of proteinto augment the world's food supplies and thereby as a meansof mitigating the crises we face-is a continuing theme throughoutthis book. At present, fish provide approximately 9 percentof the world's protein. Fish are sought not only for food butalso for recreation and pleasure. What forces determine the presentsupply and demand for fishery products? More important, what steps are needed to utilize the full potential of the sea asa source of food and recreation? This book explores these forcesand thus provides an insight into food potential from the sea.
