This monograph gives an exposition of Hodge theory, leading to three new proofs of a local Torelli theorem for curves and a proof for a smooth family of surfaces, threefolds, or fourfolds, whose cotangent map is a birational morphism.

Hodge theory originated as an application of harmonic theory to the study of the geometry of compact complex manifolds. The ideas have proved to be quite powerful, leading to fundamentally important results throughout algebraic geometry. This book consists of expositions of various aspects of modern Hodge theory. Its purpose is to provide the nonexpert reader with a precise idea of the current status of the subject. The three chapters develop distinct but closely related subjects: $L^2$ Hodge theory and vanishing theorems; Frobenius and Hodge degeneration; variations of Hodge structures and mirror symmetry. The techniques employed cover a wide range of methods borrowed from the heart of mathematics: elliptic PDE theory, complex differential geometry, algebraic geometry in characteristic $p$, cohomological and sheaf-theoretic methods, deformation theory of complex varieties, Calabi-Yau manifolds, singularity theory, etc. A special effort has been made to approach the various themes from their most natural starting points. Each of the three chapters is supplemented with a detailed introduction and numerous references. The reader will find precise statements of quite a number of open problems that have been the subject of active research in recent years. The reader should have some familiarity with differential and algebraic geometry, with other prerequisites varying by chapter. The book is suitable as an accompaniment to a second course in algebraic geometry.

This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to Hodge theory—one of the central and most vibrant areas of contemporary mathematics—from leading specialists on the subject. The topics range from the basic topology of algebraic varieties to the study of variations of mixed Hodge structure and the Hodge theory of maps. Of particular interest is the study of algebraic cycles, including the Hodge and Bloch-Beilinson Conjectures. Based on lectures delivered at the 2010 Summer School on Hodge Theory at the ICTP in Trieste, Italy, the book is intended for a broad group of students and researchers. The exposition is as accessible as possible and doesn't require a deep background. At the same time, the book presents some topics at the forefront of current research. The book is divided between introductory and advanced lectures. The introductory lectures address Kähler manifolds, variations of Hodge structure, mixed Hodge structures, the Hodge theory of maps, period domains and period mappings, algebraic cycles (up to and including the Bloch-Beilinson conjecture) and Chow groups, sheaf cohomology, and a new treatment of Grothendieck’s algebraic de Rham theorem. The advanced lectures address a Hodge-theoretic perspective on Shimura varieties, the spread philosophy in the study of algebraic cycles, absolute Hodge classes (including a new, self-contained proof of Deligne’s theorem on absolute Hodge cycles), and variation of mixed Hodge structures. The contributors include Patrick Brosnan, James Carlson, Eduardo Cattani, François Charles, Mark Andrea de Cataldo, Fouad El Zein, Mark L. Green, Phillip A. Griffiths, Matt Kerr, Lê Dũng Tráng, Luca Migliorini, Jacob P. Murre, Christian Schnell, and Loring W. Tu.

The word ``moduli'' in the sense of this book first appeared in the epoch-making paper of B. Riemann, Theorie der Abel'schen Funktionen, published in 1857. Riemann defined a Riemann surface of an algebraic function field as a branched covering of a one-dimensional complex projective space, and found out that Riemann surfaces have parameters. This work gave birth to the theory of moduli. However, the viewpoint regarding a Riemann surface as an algebraic curve became the mainstream, and the moduli meant the parameters for the figures (graphs) defined by equations. In 1913, H. Weyl defined a Riemann surface as a complex manifold of dimension one. Moreover, Teichmuller's theory of quasiconformal mappings and Teichmuller spaces made a start for new development of the theory ofmoduli, making possible a complex analytic approach toward the theory of moduli of Riemann surfaces. This theory was then investigated and made complete by Ahlfors, Bers, Rauch, and others. However, the theory of Teichmuller spaces utilized the special nature of complex dimension one, and it was difficult to generalize it to an arbitrary dimension in a direct way. It was Kodaira-Spencer's deformation theory of complex manifolds that allowed one to study arbitrary dimensional complex manifolds.Initial motivation in Kodaira-Spencer's discussion was the need to clarify what one should mean by number of moduli. Their results, together with further work by Kuranishi, provided this notion with intrinsic meaning. This book begins by presenting the Kodaira-Spencer theory in its original naiveform in Chapter 1 and introduces readers to moduli theory from the viewpoint of complex analytic geometry. Chapter 2 briefly outlines the theory of period mapping and Jacobian variety for compact Riemann surfaces, with the Torelli theorem as a goal. The theory of period mappings for compact Riemann surfaces can be generalized to the theory of period mappings in terms of Hodge structures for compact Kahler manifolds. In Chapter 3, the authors state the theory of Hodge structures, focusingbriefly on period mappings. Chapter 4 explains conformal field theory as an application of moduli theory. This is the English translation of a book originally published in Japanese. The first of two volumes offering a modern introduction to Kaehlerian geometry and Hodge structure. The book starts with basic material on complex variables, complex manifolds, holomorphic vector bundles, sheaves and cohomology theory, the latter being treated in a more theoretical way than is usual in geometry. The author then proves the Kaehler identities, which leads to the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Hodge index theorem. The book culminates with the Hodge decomposition theorem. The meanings of these results are investigated in several directions. Completely self-contained, the book is ideal for students, while its content gives an account of Hodge theory and complex algebraic geometry as has been developed by P. Griffiths and his school, by P. Deligne, and by S. Bloch. The text is complemented by exercises which provide useful results in complex algebraic geometry.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Phillip Griffiths and his collaborators undertook a study of period mappings and variation of Hodge structure. The motivating problems, which centered on the understanding of algebraic varieties and the algebraic cycles on them, came from algebraic geometry. However, the techiques used were transcendental in nature, drawing heavily on both Lie theory and hermitian differential geometry. Promising approaches were formulated to fundamental questions in the theory of algebraic curves, moduli theory, and the deep interaction between Hodge theory and algebraic cyles. Rapid progress on many fronts was made in the 1970s and 1980s, including the discovery of important connections to other fields, including Nevanlinna theory, integrable systems, rational homotopy theory, harmonic mappings, intersection cohomology, and superstring theory. This volume contains thirteen papers presented during the Symposium on Complex Geometry and Lie Theory held in Sundance, Utah in May 1989. The symposium was designed to review twenty years of interaction between these two fields, concentrating on their links with Hodge theory. The organizers felt that the time was right to examine once again the large issues of understanding the moduli and cycle theory of higher-dimensional varieties, which was the starting point of these developments. The breadth of this collection of papers indicates the continuing growth and vitality of this area of research. Several survey papers are included, which should make the book a valuable resource for graduate students and other researchers who wish to learn about the field. With contributions from some of the field's top researchers, this volume testifies to the breadth and vitality of this area of research.
