Meer dan een eeuw geleden (1904) publiceerde Sigmund Freud zijn Psychopathologie van het alledaags leven. Met de titel van dit boek wordt dan ook eerbiedig op dat werk van Freud gezinspeeld. In de laatste verhandeling zoomt de auteur in op de hedendaagse psychopathologie die een aktuaalpathologische wending neemt. Naast verslaving en divers ageergedrag uit ze zich onder andere in zelfverwonding. Die is (althans gedeeltelijk) te begrijpen als protest tegen micro- en macroculturele tekortkomingen.
