The Hog Book is one of the most radical works in the annals of classic animal literature. This is the definitive work that touched off the whole recent revolution in our hog awareness leading to the ever-spreading acceptance of pigs as pets, as working partners, organ donors, movie stars, and so many other fresh manifestations of the barely tapped porcine potential. The Hog Book is also a lot of fun.

When Jacob Biggle first published The Biggle Swine Book in 1898, hog husbandry was undergoing major changes. New feeding methods had come into vogue, new breeds of hogs had been developed, and significant progress had been made in curbing swine-borne epidemics. Even the public perception of pigs as filthy creatures wallowing up to their knees in mud had brightened, and pigs were accorded a modicum of respect. But with the onset of railroad development across the United States, the backyard pig farmer started losing ground to slaughterhouses and large processing plants. The Biggle Swine Book captures this moment in American history when home animal husbandry was giving way to more industrialized meat production. Nevertheless, Jacob Biggle continued to offer guidance to the small-scale farmer on all manner of livestock issues, centered around the proper breeding, feeding, and care of pigs. His book includes valuable instructions on: What to do at farrowing time Constructing the piggery and sty Keeping on top of the manure pile Butchering and curing meats Protecting your animals from various pig ailments Illustrated with photographs, engravings, and line drawings throughout of all things pig-related, this book is a glimpse into a bygone era when sows and their litters had a place on every farm, and people knew exactly where their bacon came from.

"Green forage is essential to the economical production of pork. A permanent pasture supplemented with quick-growing, heavy-yielding, temporary forage crops is most satisfactory. There should be on an average 1 acre of permanent pasture for each brood sow kept. Some of the heavy-yielding, quick-growing forage crops will add considerable feed to the quantity produced by a permanent pasture. There should be mature crops, such as corn, soy beans, peanuts, or velvet beans for finishing the hogs in the fall. Oats, rye and wheat give satisfactory winter grazing. Green forage alone is little better than a maintenance ration. Where rapid gains are desired, the hogs should have a liberal allowance of grain. The rule should be, all the grain they will eat without waste. Woven-wire hog fencing tacked to stakes makes the best temporary fence. Growing forage crops and grazing them off on the land is an efficient method of improving soils depleted in organic matter. The exercise obtained in grazing exerts a beneficial influence on the health of hogs."--P. 2.

Extract: There were 78 percent fewer hog farmers in 1978 than in 1950 but they produced about as much pork, and were located in the same regions of the country. The hog industry has moved rapidly to fewer and larger operations that draw on more capital-intensive technologies, like special housing with automated cleaning and feeding equipment. Differences are found in the characteristics and technical input/output ratios of smaller vs. larger operations, with apparent advantages for large operations in many important areas. These findings are based on a 1981 survey of hog producers.
