Roberta Johnson employs a chronological format to highlight continuity and polemics in Spanish feminist thinking from the eighteenth century to the present. She brings together arguments from well-known names such as Benito Jerónimo Feijoo, Concepción Arenal, Emilia Pardo Bazán, María Martínez Sierra, Carmen de Burgos, and Carmen Laforet, as well as less familiar figures such as the Countess Campo Alange María Laffitte and Lilí Álvarez, who defied restrictions on feminist activity during the Franco dictatorship to publish feminist books. The topics of difference and equality are explored, and the book recounts the long tension between theorists of each persuasion—a tension that erupted publicly during Spain’s democratic era. Esos seres, vivan en el da a da causando consternacin a todos. En nuestros tiempos nos educaban, inculcndonos miedo hacia personajes tenebrosos, con la finalidad de lograr nuestra obediencia. De all que, ser obediente era nuestro lema principal. S que muchos se sentirn identificados con esta historia, porque vivieron experiencias similares. No deseo con la misma, condenar a nuestros padres y abuelos, quienes a cuesta de esfuerzos, nos formaron para ser las mejores personas, a pesar de los errores en ellos. Ms bien, ac desnudo un poco, la ignorancia en la que se encontraban sumergidos estos mayores, en cuanto a la crianza de los hijos, y de lo considerado, a su vez, la mejor forma de lograr que fusemos disciplinados y obedientes. Una crianza que estaba basada en el miedo a alguien que estaba all, conviviendo con cada uno de nosotros, quin adems, nos vigilaba para castigarnos en un primer momento, que nos portsemos mal.
