Holidays and the Feasts, revised and expanded, looks at three major subjects: The Old Testament feasts, Christmas, and Easter. Within this book the author examines the alleged pagan roots of Christmas and Easter, provides a biblical case for celebrating Christmas, and answers the question "Are Christians obligated to observe Old Testament feasts?" Contents: Part 1: Christians and the Feasts. Part I examines the Old Testament feasts, their function, and how Christians should understand them today. This section of the book begins by summarizing the Old Testament festivals and how they were understood in Jesus' day. Following this, applications are drawn concerning contemporary Christian practice. Part 2: Christmas and Paganism. Part II of the book examines the alleged claims of Christmas' pagan roots. In this section, Holidays and the Feasts argues that Christmas developed independently from pagan celebrations before speaking to various pagan ties Christmas is often charged with. The book looks at what ancient Christians wrote and thought concerning Christmas and weighs whether those Christians would form a holiday for the sake of replacing a pagan one. Part 3: A Biblical Case for Celebrating Christmas. Part III of the book presents a biblical case for celebrating the incarnation despite not being an explicitly instituted observance. This section speaks to celebration in general before moving into the Gospels and Paul in order to demonstrate that the incarnation was celebrated by the New Testament Christians, leaving an annual observance permissible. Part 4: Easter and Paganism. Part IV of the book challenges the claims that Easter is pagan by examining what is 'pagan' and then moving into the term "Easter" itself. Following this, the section discusses the connections of Easter with Ishtar and Eostre before demonstrating that Easter was a very early observance in church history formed to commemorate the resurrection. On the Third Edition: Reformatted for ease of readability Reorganization of parts of the book Expansions in parts I, II, and IV. New Chapter in Part IV Two new Appendices for supplemental reading

This book is a transcript of the podcast Episodes 148, 155, and 156 at Christ is the Cure wherein we cover holidays and the feasts. In this book we cover the most common claims of the "pagan roots" of Christmas and Easter while also discussing whether or not Christians are obligated to observe Old Testament feasts. In this book we'll discuss whether or not Christmas is truly Sol Invictus repackaged and whether or not Easter is really a celebration of Ishtar. I hope this resource proves helpful despite its unconventional nature. **Note: Due to printing costs, the print edition is more highly-priced than expected, however, due to a demand for the print copy it will remain available for purchase. That said, this book is also available on Kindle for a more reasonable price based on the length of the book.**

Every day is a holiday in the Catholic Church. In their latest collaboration, Cardinal Wuerl and Mike Aquilina examine the history and traditions behind both favorite and forgotten holidays, from Christmas to Easter, from the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity to the Feast of the Holy Angels Catholic faith is festive, and the Catholic faithful count their days by celebrating the mysteries of Jesus' life. There is a message to be found in the passing of days, weeks, and seasons. Through the feasts, ordinary Christians learn the life of Christ, share it, and come to imitate it. This book continues the work the authors began in their books The Mass and The Church, exploring the meaning and purpose of the most basic and beloved aspects of Catholic life. Each chapter uncovers the biblical origins and development of one of the great feasts or fasts -- Advent, Epiphany, the Holy Angels, all the Marian feasts, and even this very day. The calendar can be a catechism for Catholics who know how to live it. "The feasts form us," write the authors, "They help to make us and remake us according to the pattern of the life of Jesus Christ. We number our days as we walk in his footsteps, from his birth to his baptism, from his passion to his resurrection, from his Ascension to his sending of the Spirit to make us saints. We do this faithfully every year, and it defines us as who we are." "Cardinal Wuerl and Aquilina show us the transformative spiritual power in the Church's original and most ancient feasts. This is a book to be prayed with and meditated on. Because when we understand the meaning of the Church's liturgical feasts, we know better the great dignity and destiny we have as children of God." - Most Reverend Jos Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles
