Colonial missionaries, both Catholic and Protestant, arrived in India with the grandiose vision of converting the pagans because, like St. Peter (Acts 4:12) and most of the church fathers, they honestly believed that there is no salvation outside the church (extra ecclesiam nulla salus). At the end of the "great Protestant century," however, Christians made up less than 3 percent of the population in India, and the hope of the missionary was nearly shattered. But if one looks at mission in India qualitatively rather than quantitatively, one sees a number of positive outcomes. Missionaries in India, particularly Protestant missionaries espousing the social gospel, in collaboration with a few British evangelical administrators, dared to challenge numerous social evils and even began to eradicate them. The scientific and liberal English education began to enlighten and transform the Indian mindset. Converts belonging to the upper caste, although small in number, laid the foundation stone of Indian theology and an inculturated church using Indian genius. The end of colonialism in India coincided with the painful death of colonial mission theology. Now, the power of the Word of God, extricated from political power, is slowly and peacefully gaining ground, like the mustard seed of the parable. A paradigm shift from the ecclesio-centric mission to missio Dei offers reason for further optimism. In short, the future of mission in India is as bright as the kingdom of God. In today's new context, theologians, despite objections from some quarters, are struggling to discover the Asian face of Jesus, disfigured by the Greco-Roman Church. And the missionary is challenged to become a living Bible that, undoubtedly, everyone will read.

Christianity has been present in India since at least the third century, but the faith remains a small minority. Even so, Christianity is growing rapidly in parts of the subcontinent, and has made an impact far beyond its numbers. Yet Indian Christianity remains highly controversial, and it has suffered growing discrimination and violence. This book shows how Christian converts and communities continue to make contributions to Indian society, even amid social pressure and violent persecution. In a time of controversy in India about the legitimacy of conversion and the value of religious diversity, Christianity in India addresses the complex issues of faith, identity, caste, and culture. It documents the outsized role of Christians in promoting human rights, providing education and healthcare, fighting injustice and exploitation, and stimulating economic uplift for the poor. Readers will come away surprised and sobered to learn how these active initiatives often invite persecution today. The essays draw on intimate and personal encounters with Christians in India, past and present, and address the challenges of religious freedom in contemporary India.

Description: Christianity and Education is a collection of papers published in Transformation: An International Journal of Holistic Mission Studies over a period of 15 years. It brings to life some of the papers that lay buried in shelves and in disparate volumes of Transformation, under a single volume for theological libraries, students and teachers. The articles here represent a spectrum of Christian thinking addressing issues of institutional development for theological education, theological studies in the context of global mission, contextually aware/informed education, and academies, which deliver such education, methodologies and personal reflections. Endorsements: ""This is a remarkable collection of essays on theological education written from different contexts and perspectives and addressing a variety of important and relevant questions in the field such as institutional development, global mission, contextual awareness and methodologies. This book will be of tremendous resource for both academics and practitioners involved in theological education, especially for those who are searching for new and appropriate ways of doing theology today, for redefining the theological task of our generation."" Dr. Corneliu Constantineanu President, Institutul Teologic Penticostal, Bucharest, Romania ""We have set before us a 'cruise liner', bound for southern seas. At a distance we are impressed by the elegance and grace. Once aboard we can be overwhelmed by her proportions, intimidated by the passages and multitude of venues and activities. Making my way to those sections and papers that I knew best, I then began to explore the challenging or unfamiliar. I commend this erudite, wide-ranging collection of papers on education in Theology, Missiology, and training for Christian service. I pray the book will stimulate the thinking of future students in their journeying, and help pastors, evangelists and teachers in building the international Body of Christ."" Brian E. Ethnic Realities and the Church delves into the delicate and subtle relationship between new Christians and non-Christian relatives as faith is spread and churches are built. Drawing from 36 years of missionary experience in India, Donald McGavran details nine types of churches in India. He provides a way to better understand the Church as it relates to the socioeconomic, sociological and anthropological realities of its members in India and beyond. He describes church growth in the country, but also underlines the important sociological factors that can affect it. Ethnic Realities and the Church presents more than lessons from India, it equips missionaries, evangelists, and church leaders with understanding of ethnicity and how it affects the structure and spread of congregations and denominations in every land.

God’s interest in the entirety of our existence and the details of his creation is quite rightly lauded by professing Christians, including those involved in theological education. But what impact does this biblical truth have on the way in which theological education is conducted? Critics are increasingly bringing attention to the shortcomings of theological education in this regard. In this thorough examination of the issue of holistic practices throughout the operations of theological institutions, Dr Jessy Jaison provides sage and actionable solutions where others have merely observed systemic weaknesses. Jaison has applied her expertise and experience of twenty-five years in theological education in India to dissect the issues, diagnose the symptoms and prescribe a way forward that will lead to stronger leaders practicing healthier ministry in God’s Kingdom for those who have ears to hear.
