In a world facing multiple existential crises, music might be seen as little more than a distraction. However, in this synthesis of ideas developed over a decade, a timely re-appraisal of the potential of musicing for human flourishing is presented, emphasising its role in the history of human evolution alongside its potential as a resource for sustainable development. A holistic philosophy of music is outlined which recognises the complex web of meaning which spreads across complementary musical dimensions of performance and participation, whilst emphasising the ‘paramusical’ benefits which arise from both. Highlighting the notion that the social bonds which arise from musicing share much of the neurobiological underpinnings of attachment and love, musicing is presented as a resource with the potential for facilitating ethical human connection. The humanistic values which are thereby materialised during musicing – love, reciprocity and justice – form the experiential grounds for inhabiting alternative social realities. Excerpt from How to Think Music In music, as in other things, we have allowed ourselves to do a great deal of thoughtless, and therefore useless work. The object of this book is to arouse those who have only played music to think music before playing it. The thought must always be prior to the fact. The inward process of listening and hearing is not adequately expressed by the word think, but it seems to be the best term descriptive of the process that the English language affords. I do not presume for a moment to address myself to the trained musician to whom this side of the question has become second nature, but rather to the lover of music who has played the piano or organ or any other musical instrument, and who has never really heard inwardly (or thought) the music he has played. Since so many persons of the latter class have enriched their lives already after the manner herein advocated, the temptation to write this book has proved irresistible. For the past decade, Fiske (music, U. of Western Ontario) has been using neural network models to test his theory that musical thinking can be described as a hierarchy of progressively more intricate pattern-comparison activity, and that the resulting musical realizations are limited to only three cognitive category types. He describes the development of his theory, several related experimental studies, and the neural network models he uses to test the theory. Neural network methodology can seem daunting, he admits, so he has tried to keep technical descriptions to a minimum in order to highlight his main goal: to describe and test a set of principles that appear to represent the foundation of musical understanding. Music theory undertakes the audacious goal of understanding why music is pleasing to the ear and why it is effective at expressing emotions. Applying mathematical thinking to music analysis is nothing new; the field of mathematical music theory is well-established and dates back to Pythagoras. This said, there is little literature on understanding music through a holistic lens. Ecologists and economists are more familiar with analyses which address indirect, nonlinear, obscure relationships between component parts of networks, often using mathematical tools. Network Environ Analysis, one of these methods, views networks as transactional systems and uses hard mathematics to describe more fully the effects which arise as systems grow in size. In this document, we investigate how Network Environ Analysis can be applied to musical pieces to understand better their musical structures. We describe multiple ways of interpreting musical pieces as transactional networks and apply the corresponding mathematics in several cases. We attempt to draw links between mathematical indices which evaluate these networks' indirect structures and musical quality, and we use these measures to give rigorous meaning to subjective music theoretic judgements. Further, we develop statistical tools which use holistic information related to these transactional networks to define and demonstrate mathematical manifestations of the style and tonality of a piece of music.

If classical singers and vocal pedagogues are to be prepared adequately for performance, teaching and co-operation in inter-professional relations, then an holistic education entailing multi-disciplinary study is essential. In this important new book, Karen Sell examines the disciplines pertinent to vocal pedagogy, tracing the lineage of views from the ancient world to the present day. In the process important diverse roots are exposed, yielding differing and even conflicting tonal ideals which have a bearing on the consideration of different singing methods and the interpretation of songs and arias. Ethics and psychology are identified as central to the entire pedagogical process along with the scientific basis of singing: encompassing acoustics, anatomy and physiology, with special reference to the bearing of the latter two upon vocal health and hygiene. A detailed consideration of singing technique is the centrepiece of the book, and an understanding of good technique and scientific awareness is shown to be fundamental to good vocal pedagogical practice. This leads to a discussion on performance and aesthetics, contributing to the education of the fully equipped singer.
