This intriguing book details the impact of rapid cultural change on the elderly in two predominantly Chinese societies--Taiwan and Singapore. As Taiwan and Singapore become more urban and industrial, and large, extended families shrink and become more isolated, experiences of older family members become very different from those in traditional Chinese society. Aging in Chinese Society describes these changes and discusses how the elderly cope with them. Interviews with Chinese elders and consultants knowledgeable about their situations, along with data from an extensive survey of the aging population conducted by the government of Singapore, illustrate how many aspects of modern life are threatening the quality of life of the elderly. Emphasizing the importance of the cultural context in which attitudes and values are formed, this book raises questions about how modernization has affected the aging experience in the United States as well as in China. Aging in Chinese Society develops a holistic approach to aging which emphasizes understanding the aging experience from the perspective of the elderly themselves. Brief stories of individual experience are included to supplement information from interviews and surveys and to illustrate ways in which elders respond to change. Geographical, historical, and cultural contexts of the aging experience in Taiwan and Singapore are considered, as are interactions of personality, culture, and religion in the quality of life of individual Chinese elders. Chapters focus on topics such as the nature of the cultural changes which have taken place in Singapore and Taiwan in the last forty years; changes in the role, status, and function in the family of the elderly; and responses of the governments of the two countries to the changing situation of Chinese elders. Aging in Chinese Society provides helpful and interesting material for gerontologists and psychologists interested in ethnicity, aging, and the impact of cultural change on the experiences of the elderly. Everyone interested in a holistic approach to the interactions of personality and culture or who wish to understand the importance of the holistic approach in working with the elderly will also find much valuable information.

This thesis documents almost twenty years of the author’s work on the development and implementation of a new approach to holistic community development in remote and disadvantaged villages in Nepal. It describes the theoretical basis of the work, the main research activities, and the practical outcomes of the implemented programs. One of the fundamental cornerstones of holistic community development is the provision of appropriate and sustainable solutions for the long-term development of local communities. This requires that people’s own identified needs be recognized and addressed in partnership with them in holistic ways. The author explains the many synergies that result from this holistic approach to community development. Another cornerstone of his approach is to utilise the communities’ locally available renewable resources for long-term sustainable development. One of the key findings of the thesis is that improved access to energy services, such as cooking with a smokeless metal stove in a clean indoor environment, basic indoor lighting, and increased food production and safe food storage (through a greenhouse and a solar drier respectively), need to be at the very heart of any long-term holistic community development project. The thesis demonstrates that tapping into locally available renewable energy resources and converting them, through contextualized and locally manufactured renewable energy technologies, has a central role in long-term holistic community development programs. Such programs are successful because they provide both appropriate technologies and life-changing experiences for the local users involved.

The book re-examines the customary belief that financing of health care is positively related to health status of population. The belief has survived, despite being fallacious, because health is not generally viewed in its widest connotation; so that resources spent on health do not touch the larger meaning of health. Hence, a non-correlation between the two. The book presents factual and analytical support for this hypothesis of non-correlation. This is done in two stages. Firstly, in terms of the existing politico-economic critique; and secondly by suggesting a holistic view of health three existing paradigms of health—the mechanistic, liberalistic and the politico-economic—have been discussed. From here the book proceeds to build a holistic paradigm of health. The holistic meaning, besides physical fitness, includes a peaceful state of mind and social consiousness, without which society can neither build a genuine health care programme nor ensure positive relationship between health care financing and health status. Such a comprehensive perspective integrates mechanistic, objective as well as subjective determinants of health. In the history of health care, the concept of health has progressively widened, first from purely microscopic to socioscopic and thereafter to culturoscopic dimensions. Holism contains them all—the body, mind, society and the total human personality. The book suggests a holistic health care perspective for promoting health and peace. “This work should lead to wider vision of health, to what the author calls Holistic Health Paradigm....â€

In 1962, when the Cold War threatened to ignite in the Cuban Missile Crisis, when more nuclear test bombs were detonated than in any other year in history, Rachel Carson released her own bombshell, Silent Spring, to challenge society's use of pesticides. To counter the use of chemicals--and bombs--the naturalist articulated a holistic vision. She wrote about a "web of life" that connected humans to the world around them and argued that actions taken in one place had consequences elsewhere. Thousands accepted her message, joined environmental groups, flocked to Earth Day celebrations, and lobbied for legislative regulation. Carson was not the only intellectual to offer holistic answers to society's problems. This book uncovers a sensibility in post-World War II American culture that both tested the logic of the Cold War and fed some of the twentieth century's most powerful social movements, from civil rights to environmentalism to the counterculture. The study examines important leaders and institutions that embraced and put into practice a holistic vision for a peaceful, healthful, and just world: nature writer Rachel Carson, structural engineer R. Buckminster Fuller, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., Jesuit priest and paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, humanistic psychologist Abraham Maslow, and the Esalen Institute and its founders, Michael Murphy and Dick Price. Each looked to whole systems instead of parts and focused on connections, interdependencies, and integration to create a better world. Though the '60s dreams of creating a more perfect world were tempered by economic inequalities, political corruption, and deep social divisions, this holistic sensibility continues to influence American culture today.

INTRODUCTION Mustafa ÖZCAN's book on "HOLISM" With the beginning of the Renaissance in the 17th century, a new way of thinking was initiated in the world of philosophy and science. Although the holistic approach was a popular way of thinking among philosophers in ancient Greece, it cannot be said that there was an important theoretical recovery in these periods. This movement in Europe is primarily Rene Descartes, who wrote books on scientific methods and brought important rules. This groundbreaking philosopher was followed by the great physicist Isaac NEWTON. On the other hand, in Germany, Leibniz has taken important steps on theoreticality and holism with an approach similar to Descartes. In the 20th century, with the great journey Charles Darwin made with his holistic point of view, holisticization also took an important step. At the beginning of the 20th century, Albert EINSTEIN fundamentally established the Darwin's-like important point of view in physics and astrophysics in his perspective on the universe and atoms. This book, in my opinion, was an important step calling for holistic thought, which became increasingly impoverished at the beginning of the 20th century. I believe that this book, which tries to make a synthesis by reflecting in the views of many thinkers on both the history of philosophy, the history of science and holism, will try to fill an important deficiency in the literature. Prof. Dr. Erol Başar Beyond the blissful integration of classical, analytical, familiar science and philosophy, Mustafa Özcan, thinking about the design and use of holistic science, went beyond the holistic science, which is still in the embryo stage in Western science, and what he describes as "meta-theory". It aims to make HAK (Understanding Everything - (or Explainer) - Theory) understandable. You will try to grasp an extraordinary effort and an intellectual challenge with pleasure in this work. Ateşan Aybars Mustafa Özcan's Holistic Science book opens new horizons for those who think on these issues with a wide inclusive and integrative approach in the world intellectual environment where the debates about the end of science, philosophy and even history continue. Prof. Dr. Fuat İnce Holistic Science... It takes great courage to prepare a book on such a subject. Dear researcher and author, Mustafa Özcan, has made a great contribution to our society and our scientific world, as he has made such a subject into a book as a result of his research over the years. Prof. Dr. Murat Dinçmen
