We Are The Champions The Politics Of Sports And Popular Music written by Ken McLeod and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-11 with Social Science categories.

Sports and popular music are synergistic agents in the construction of identity and community. They are often interconnected through common cross-marketing tactics and through influence on each other's performative strategies and stylistic content. Typically only studied as separate entities, popular music and sport cultures mutually 'play' off each other in exchanges of style, ideologies and forms. Posing unique challenges to notions of mind - body dualities, nationalism, class, gender, and racial codes and sexual orientation, Dr Ken McLeod illuminates the paradoxical and often conflicting relationships associated with these modes of leisure and entertainment and demonstrates that they are not culturally or ideologically distinct but are interconnected modes of contemporary social practice. Examples include how music is used to enhance sporting events, such as anthems, chants/cheers, and intermission entertainment, music that is used as an active part of the athletic event, and music that has been written about or that is associated with sports. There are also connections in the use of music in sports movies, television and video games and important, though critically under-acknowledged, similarities regarding spectatorship, practice and performance. Despite the scope of such confluences, the extraordinary impact of the interrelationship of music and sports on popular culture has remained little recognized. McLeod ties together several influential threads of popular culture and fills a significant void in our understanding of the construction and communication of identity in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

Ta-Ta is a product of his environment, the firstborn of his young abusive mother, and practically living at her mercy. Trying to break free of her violent grips and come into his self is no easy task, when trapped in the triple stages of her darkness. But when tragedy strikes in the Bronx flat, and the pressures of BCW threatens her position, Sabrina, Ta-Ta's mother, crumbles, letting her drug addition nearly take her life. Immediately, he and his two younger siblings are removed from the unfit home, and split up. Now Ta-Ta must struggle with his own ups and downs, valleys and peaks, all brought on by his newfound freedom, and sudden infatuation with the streets. By the time he's thirteen, he's exposed to everything from sex and drugs, to violence, all of which simultaneously becomes daily indulgents. Nave enough to believe he can survive on his own, he runs away from every home afforded him, until he's literally homeless. With nowhere to turn, he finds himself back in the folds of the only person who understands him. And it is then and there that he realizes what Sabrina was preparing him for.

A must-read for old-school hip-hop heads and burgeoning fans alike Time 'Hip Hip is not History, it's Our story. Brilliant book' Craig Charles 'Hip-Hop Is History melds a detailed chronological retelling of the genre's story with occasionally hair-raising memoir ' Guardian 'Sharp and lyrical analyses of hip-hop's evolution with fascinating, up-close recollections of the genre's turning point... an exuberant account of a dynamic musical genre and the cultural climate in which it evolved Publishers Weekly When hip-hop first emerged in the 1970s, it wasn't expected to become the cultural force it is today. But for a young Black kid growing up in a musical family in Philadelphia, it was everything. He stayed up late to hear the newest songs on the radio. He saved his money to buy vinyl as soon as it landed. He even started to try to make his own songs. That kid was Questlove, and decades later, he is a six-time Grammy Award-winning musician, an Academy Award-winning filmmaker, a New York Times bestselling author, a producer, an entrepreneur, a cofounder of one of hip-hop's defining acts (the Roots), and the genre's unofficial in-house historian. In this landmark book, Hip-Hop Is History, Questlove skilfully traces the creative and cultural forces that made and shaped hip-hop, highlighting both the forgotten but influential gems and the undeniable chart-topping hits-and weaves it all together with the stories no one else knows. It is at once an intimate, sharply observed story of a cultural revolution and a sweeping, grand theory of the evolution of the great artistic movement of our time. And Questlove, of course, approaches it with not only the encyclopaedic fluency and passion of an obsessive fan but also the expertise and originality of an innovative participant. Hip-hop is history, and also his history. 'A must-read for music lovers, cultural history buffs, and hip-hop fans... Questlove's illuminating and insightful survey is as personal as it is expert' Booklist 'A memorable, masterful history of the first 50 years of an indelible American art form' Kirkus Reviews The musician and Oscar-winning director traces the first 50 years of hip-hop... Questlove pairs the history of hip-hop with a personal reflection on how the genre shaped his identity during his childhood in Philadelphia The Week
