Preston Emory's life makes for easy jokes on late-night talk shows. He's a has-been actor who's best known for his chiseled pecs and his April-July marriage to beloved actress Peri Conrad. To the tabloid-loving public, Preston is the luckiest man on earth. But Peri's a raging narcissist who routinely humiliates him, slaps him around from time to time, and is threatening to expose a shameful secret from his past if he leaves her. Mary Matuskevitch is "Hollywood's It Girl," an actress so grotesquely ugly that she specializes in playing carnival freaks and psychopaths. It's humiliating work, but it puts money in the bank ― money she plans to use for plastic surgery. She doesn't have delusions of being beautiful, or even pretty; she just wants to shop for groceries without scaring small children. And when she says she'd kill for a new face, she means it. Barry Fishman, known in Hollywood as Dr. Goldfish, is one of L.A.'s most successful plastic surgeons, but he's got a bad cocaine habit, an expensive mistress, and serious problems with the IRS. He's desperate for a big payday, and he's not the type of man who lets his conscience get in the way of what he wants. When Peri is bludgeoned with her own Oscar, everyone thinks Preston had something to do with it ― gossip sites, Twitter, and a hard-ass district attorney with political aspirations. The attack sets off a wave of panic in Hollywood, and the D.A. wants a suspect behind bars, ASAP. That task falls on veteran Beverly Hills Police Detective Vincent Lombardo. In a case of murder-for-hire gone wrong, Lombardo may be the only person looking to do what's right. Hollywood Ending is equal parts crime caper and modern Hollywood noir. Matt O'Connor tells the story from multiple character perspectives, with several interwoven subplots involving a socialite reality star, a sex tape, unlikely romance, and a bugout bag hiding a ransom of gold coins. In Hollywood Ending, O'Connor pulls off an impressive debut effort ― a pulpy satire of our post-shame, obscene, celebrity-obsessed culture that also offers softer, sweeter moments of love and longing and hurt. We're constantly hitting new lows. But there are first kisses, too, so it can't be all bad.

Two spectacular dead bodies—Elizabeth Short, known as the Black Dahlia, found dumped and posed in a vacant lot in January 1947, and Marilyn Monroe, found dead in her home in August 1962—bookend this new history of Hollywood’s postwar transition. Short’s murder called attention to the lives of the many disenfranchised in Los Angeles; she was, after all, one of them. Monroe’s death involved the entourage inhabiting her movie star orbit: quack doctors, gangsters, Hollywood celebrities, the FBI and the CIA, and, inevitably, the Kennedys. Hard-Boiled Hollywood focuses on the many lives lost at the crossroads of a dreamed-of Hollywood and the real thing following the collapse of the studio system as celebrities, moguls, mobsters, gossip mongers, and industry wannabes came into frequent contact and conflict.

"Speaking about the kind of filmmaking now known as Classic Hollywood ..., Vincente Minnelli once gave away its secret: 'I feel that a picture that stays with you is made up of a hundred or more hidden things. They're things that the audience is not conscious of, but that accumulate'." The ABCs of Classic Hollywood looks closely at four movies from the 1930-1945 period when the American Studio System reached the peak of its economic and cultural power: Grand Hotel, The Philadelphia Story, The Maltese Falcon, and Meet Me in St. Louis." --book cover.

What Ever Happened To Orson Welles written by Joseph McBride and has been published by University Press of Kentucky this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-23 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

At twenty-five, Orson Welles (1915-1985) directed, co-wrote, and starred in Citizen Kane, widely considered the best film ever made. But Welles was such a revolutionary filmmaker that he found himself at odds with the Hollywood studio system. His work was so far ahead of its time that he never regained the wide popular following he had once enjoyed as a young actor-director on the radio. Frustrated by Hollywood and falling victim to the postwar blacklist, Welles departed for a long European exile. But he kept making films, functioning with the creative freedom of an independent filmmaker before that term became common and eventually preserving his independence by funding virtually all his own projects. Because he worked defiantly outside the system, Welles has often been maligned as an errant genius who squandered his early promise. Film critic Joseph McBride, who acted in Welles's legendary unfinished film The Other Side of the Wind, provocatively challenges conventional wisdom about Welles's supposed creative decline. McBride is the first author to provide a comprehensive examination of the films of Welles's artistically rich yet little-known later period. During the 1970s and '80s, Welles was breaking new aesthetic ground, experimenting as adventurously as he had throughout his career. McBride's friendship and collaboration with Welles and his interviews with those who knew and worked with the director make What Ever Happened to Orson Welles? a portrait of rare intimacy and insight. Reassessing Welles's final period in the context of his entire life and work, McBride's revealing portrait of this great film artist will change the terms of how Orson Welles is regarded.

Walking Shadows written by John Evangelist Walsh and has been published by Popular Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Performing Arts categories.

Walking Shadows dramatically dissects the wild, high-profile battle between newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst and famous young actor, director, and filmmaker Orson Welles over Welles's groundbreaking film Citizen Kane. In 1940 and 1941 it became the center of public controversy and scandal, especially in Hollywood where Welles's own stark honesty and blatant self-confidence heightened the drama. Citizen Kane portrayed the ruthless career of an all-powerful magnate bearing (not accidentally) a striking resemblance to Hearst, who immediately tried to kill the picture. John Evangelist Walsh here illuminates the conflict between these two outsize personalities and for the first time brings Hearst's vengeful anti-Kane campaign to the fore. Walsh provides thorough documentation, supplemental notes, and an extended bibliography.

Blackmail written by Tom Ryall and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-25 with Performing Arts categories.

Alfred Hitchcock's Blackmail (1929) was the first major British sound film. Tom Ryall examines its unusual production history, and places it in the context of Hitchcock's other British films of the period. Is is, Ryall argues, both a considerable work of art in itself, and also one of the first to display those touches we now think of as typically Hitchcockian: a blonde heroine in jeopardy, a surprise killing, some brilliantly manipulated suspense, and a last-reel chase around a familiar public landmark (in this case, the British Museum). There's also a cameo appearance by the director himself, as a harassed traveller on the London Underground.
