The Femme Fatale written by Julie Grossman and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-18 with Performing Arts categories.

Ostensibly the villain, but also a model of female power, poise, and intelligence, the femme fatale embodies Hollywood’s contradictory attitudes toward ambitious women. But how has the figure of the femme fatale evolved over time, and to what extent have these changes reflected shifting cultural attitudes toward female independence and sexuality? This book offers readers a concise look at over a century of femmes fatales on both the silver screen and the TV screen. Starting with ethnically exoticized silent film vamps like Theda Bara and Pola Negri, it examines classic film noir femmes fatales like Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity, as well as postmodern revisions of the archetype in films like Basic Instinct and Memento. Finally, it explores how contemporary film and television creators like Fleabag and Killing Eve’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge have appropriated the femme fatale in sympathetic and surprising ways. Analyzing not only the films themselves, but also studio press kits and reviews, The Femme Fatale considers how discourses about the pleasures and dangers of female performance are projected onto the figure of the femme fatale. Ultimately, it is a celebration of how “bad girl” roles have provided some of Hollywood’s most talented actresses opportunities to fully express their on-screen charisma.

More Than Night written by James Naremore and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-01-14 with Performing Arts categories.

"Film noir" evokes memories of stylish, cynical, black-and-white movies from the 1940s and '50s—melodramas about private eyes, femmes fatales, criminal gangs, and lovers on the run. James Naremore's prize-winning book discusses these pictures, but also shows that the central term is more complex and paradoxical than we realize. It treats noir as a term in criticism, as an expression of artistic modernism, as a symptom of Hollywood censorship and politics, as a market strategy, as an evolving style, and as an idea that circulates through all the media. This new and expanded edition of More Than Night contains an additional chapter on film noir in the twenty-first century.

Femmes Fatales written by Janine Paver and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-11-01 with Social Science categories.

She's wily, murderous and unquestionably seductive. In fact, the femme fatale may well be one of American cinema's most complex characters. And as surely as she draws men into her orbit, the femme fatale of classic film noir cinema has sparked intense interest among film buffs, sociologists, and feminist academics, among others. In Femmes Fatales: Resistance, Power, and Postfeminism, author Janine Paver dives into this lively debate, tracing the history of the femme fatale from pre-Code Hollywood to contemporary film. By looking at how this iconic character changes over time, Paver provides extraordinary insight into the complex social and political dimensions of feminist thought. The author incorporates film criticism, literary review, academic scholarship, and ethnographic interviews to give the reader a rich insight into this deeply controversial and intensely interesting on-screen persona, and how she mirrors the changing views of sex, power and gender in America.

Dames In The Driver S Seat written by Jans B. Wager and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-09-01 with Performing Arts categories.

With its focus on dangerous, determined femmes fatales, hardboiled detectives, and crimes that almost-but-never-quite succeed, film noir has long been popular with moviegoers and film critics alike. Film noir was a staple of classical Hollywood filmmaking during the years 1941-1958 and has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity since the 1990s. Dames in the Driver's Seat offers new views of both classical-era and contemporary noirs through the lenses of gender, class, and race. Jans Wager analyzes how changes in film noir's representation of women's and men's roles, class status, and racial identities mirror changes in a culture that is now often referred to as postmodern and postfeminist. Following introductory chapters that establish the theoretical basis of her arguments, Wager engages in close readings of the classic noirs The Killers, Out of the Past, and Kiss Me Deadly and the contemporary noirs L. A. Confidential, Mulholland Falls, Fight Club, Twilight, Fargo, and Jackie Brown. Wager divides recent films into retro-noirs (made in the present, but set in the 1940s and 1950s) and neo-noirs (made and set in the present but referring to classic noir narratively or stylistically). Going beyond previous studies of noir, her perceptive readings of these films reveal that retro-noirs fulfill a reactionary social function, looking back nostalgically to outdated gender roles and racial relations, while neo-noirs often offer more revisionary representations of women, though not necessarily of people of color.

"In the context of nineteenth-century Victorinoir and close readings of original-cycle film noir, Julie Grossman argues that the presence of the 'femme fatale' figure, as she is understood in film criticism and popular culture, is drastically over-emphasized and has helped to sustain cultural obsessions with 'bad' women"--Provided by publisher

Film noir is usually associated with a series of darkly seductive Hollywood thrillers from the 1940s and 1950s--shadowy, black-and-white pictures about private eyes, femme fatales, outlaw lovers, criminal heists, corrupt police, and doomed or endangered outsiders. But Film Noir: A Very Short Introduction demonstrates that the genre has much earlier origins and is more international in scope. The key themes and styles of film noir are discussed along with some of the most iconic film noirs, exploring important aspects of their history and ongoing influence: their critical reception, major literary sources, methods of dealing with censorship and budgets, social and cultural politics, variety of styles, and future in a world of digital media and video streaming.
