In this exciting first-hand account of an unexpected cinematic discovery, Michael Gates delves into the history behind a hoard of silent films found buried beneath the permafrost of an Arctic gold rush town. In 1978, hundreds of reels of silent films were unearthed from beneath the demolished site of an old hockey arena in Dawson City, Yukon. Author Michael Gates witnessed the cinematic discovery of these once-lost films—and in this book excavates and illuminates the history of a gold rush town like no other. An event in the most unlikely of places and circumstances, the Klondike gold rush was unique in the history of Canada and the development of the North. Dawson City, the “Paris of the North,” was the hub of the Klondike gold rush 125 years ago. There were more saloons, gambling halls and theatres than there were places serving food, and the live theatre was at the centre of it all. Discover the icons who went from the Klondike to Hollywood: Robert Service, Jack London, Charlie Chaplin, Alexander Pantages, Sid Grauman, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, Marjorie Rambeau and more. Join Gates on this cinematic journey as he ponders the question: Did the Klondike help make Hollywood, or did Hollywood make the Klondike? Crafted from Gates’s first-hand experience and extensive research, Hollywood in the Klondike casts a spotlight on an exciting piece of Canadian history.

From the Gold Rush to rush hour, the history of the American West is fraught with diverse, subversive, and at times downright eccentric elements. This provocative volume challenges traditional readings of western history and literature, and redraws the boundaries of the American West with absorbing essays ranging widely on topics from tourism to immigration, from environmental battles to interethnic relations, and from law to film. Taken together, the essays reassess the contributions of a diverse and multicultural America to the West, as they link western issues to global frontiers. Featuring the latest work by some of the best new writers both inside and outside academia, the original essays in Over the Edge confront the traditional field of western American studies with a series of radical, speculative, and sometimes outrageous challenges. The collection reads the West through Ben-Hur and the films of Mae West; revises the western American literary canon to include the works of African American and Mexican American writers; examines the implications of miscegenation law and American Indian blood quantum requirements; and brings attention to the historical participation of Mexican and Japanese American women, Native American slaves, and Alaskan cannery workers in community life.

Too Much Of A Good Thing written by Ramona Curry and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Before Madonna, before Marilyn, there was Mae. The impact of Mae West - through her films, attitude, and aphorisms ("Too much of a good thing can be wonderful"; "Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?") - continues to reverberate through American popular culture more than fifteen years after her death. In Too Much of a Good Thing, Ramona Curry examines the interplay between West's bawdy, worldly persona and twentieth-century gender and media politics. Although West has remained an important figure, her image has fulfilled varied cultural functions. In the thirties, she was a lightning rod for debates over morality and censorship. In the seventies, the complexity of her portrayal of gender made her a controversial figure for both the gay rights and feminist movements. Curry not only analyzes the symbolic roles West has occupied, arguing that the entertainer represents a carefully orchestrated transgression of race, class, and gender expectations, she also illustrates how icons of pop culture often distill contested social issues, serving diverse and even contradictory political functions. A pithy and innovative look at what Mae West means, Too Much of a Good Thing is must reading for fans, film buffs, and anyone interested in how popular culture evolves and circulates in the United States.

Cigar Box Lithographs Vol 3 written by Charles J. Humber and has been published by FriesenPress this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-20 with Antiques & Collectibles categories.

Collecting 100-year-old lithographs attached to the inside lids of wooden cigar boxes is a gratifying hobby. This Jack Minor cigar box imitates a log house, not the typical venue for cigar makers who made plane wooden boxes for their cigar brands. Since the log house box is labelled Jack Miner, one presumes it was made in Canada because Jack Miner, from southwestern Ontario, was world-renowned as a Canadian conservationist banding thousands of migratory geese during his life. Acquired after Volume III of this four-volume series had gone to the printer, this rare cigar box is now displayed on the back cover of Volume III. Made, 1925, by B. R. Hahn, a member of the Isaak Walton League, Bay City, Michigan, this cigar maker wished to salute this Canadian with a custom-made cigar box. There are some 200 Isaak Walton League (see Volume II, page 81) Chapters across the U.S.A.

“When you’re a success, when you’re at the top... that’s when they come for you. Everybody wants a piece... a piece of the action.” It’s 1960 and Klondike’s Circus is now a major, money-making juggernaut, with TV specials, Las Vegas engagements and all manner of sponsorship and endorsement deals in the pipeline. When the troupe is offered a starring role in a huge circus spectacular involving multiple promotions, boss Kal Klondike feels on top of the world. But that’s when the dark shadows start gathering. Sinister, malicious figures, all with a score to settle. And all wanting a slice of his profits. A deadly gangster. A humiliated performer. A madman long thought dead. And, at the head of the table, Klondike’s greatest rival, his former mentor and partner. Everybody wants a piece. Nobody is safe. The stage is set...
