The image in Hollywood movies of savage Indians attacking white settlers represents only one side of a very complicated picture. In fact sympathetic portrayals of Native Americans stood alongside those of hostile Indians in the silent films of D. W. Griffith and Cecil B. DeMille, and flourished during the early 1930s with Hollywood's cycle of pro-Indian adventures. Decades later, the stereotype became even more complicated, as films depicted the savagery of whites (The Searchers) in contrast to the more peaceful Indian (Broken Arrow). By 1990 the release of Dances with Wolves appeared to have recycled the romantic and savage portrayals embedded in early cinema. In this new study, author Angela Aleiss traces the history of Native Americans on the silver screen, and breaks new ground by drawing on primary sources such as studio correspondence, script treatments, trade newspapers, industry censorship files, and filmmakers' interviews to reveal how and why Hollywood created its Indian characters. Behind-the-scenes anecdotes of filmmakers and Native Americans, as well as rare archival photographs, supplement the discussion, which often shows a stark contrast between depiction and reality. The book traces chronologically the development of the Native American's screen image while also examining many forgotten or lost Western films. Each chapter will feature black and white stills from the films discussed.

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,7, University of Rostock (Institut für Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: HS Representations of Diasporic Identities in Film and Film Music: The Example of India, 9 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This paper is trying to “locate the East and the West in the same person”, that is, in the protagonists of two recent films: American Desi and Bollywood/Hollywood. Both were directed by NRIs (Non-Resident Indians) and are set within the Indian Diaspora of North America. Bollywood/Hollywood is a romantic comedy/parody set in Toronto, Canada, while American Desi is a college comedy set among the Indian students of a typical American college. Both films deal comically with the difficulties that arise from living in two worlds, adapting to two different sets of values and the question of identity. First, this paper is going to lay the groundwork by defining what is meant by diasporic identity, supplying some background information on the Indian communities of Canada and the USA and giving a short synopsis for both of the films. The next chapter discusses how certain themes of Indianness, e.g. family, religion and pop culture, are depicted in the films. Then, the – assumed – diasporic identities of the main protagonists are described. Finally, the conclusion will not only summarize the findings, but also try to find parallels between the films and their characters, as well as differences that might be connected with one stemming from Canada and one from the USA.

At once informative, comic, and plaintive, Seeing Red—Hollywood’s Pixeled Skins is an anthology of critical reviews that reexamines the ways in which American Indians have traditionally been portrayed in film. From George B. Seitz’s 1925 The Vanishing American to Rick Schroder’s 2004 Black Cloud, these 36 reviews by prominent scholars of American Indian Studies are accessible, personal, intimate, and oftentimes autobiographic. Seeing Red—Hollywood’s Pixeled Skins offers indispensible perspectives from American Indian cultures to foreground the dramatic, frequently ridiculous difference between the experiences of Native peoples and their depiction in film. By pointing out and poking fun at the dominant ideologies and perpetuation of stereotypes of Native Americans in Hollywood, the book gives readers the ability to recognize both good filmmaking and the dangers of misrepresenting aboriginal peoples. The anthology offers a method to historicize and contextualize cinematic representations spanning the blatantly racist, to the well-intentioned, to more recent independent productions. Seeing Red is a unique collaboration by scholars in American Indian Studies that draws on the stereotypical representations of the past to suggest ways of seeing American Indians and indigenous peoples more clearly in the twenty-first century.

Born on 9 July 1925 into a Saraswat family of Mangalore and educated in the liberal climate of Calcutta, Guru Dutt started his own production company in 1954 with Aar Paar, and never looked back till Sahib Bibi aur Gulam, 1962, his last film. On 9 October 1964, he committed suicide. His oeuvre is now widely regarded as one of the most rich and significant legacies of Indian cinema, amongst the finest examples of the melodrama mode. The aim of this volume is to lay before the reader a particular melodramatic tradition of the Hindi film that Guru Dutt typified. The critical fragments spread over the book s six chapters are all taken from the body of work done by western critics in elevating the Hollywood melodrama, primarily of the forties and fifties, to critical acceptability and respectability. Dutt s Indian melodramas, functioning around the same time, seem to be assembled in very similar ways and when examined under these rubrics, reveal an astonishing level of vision and craftsmanship. Darius Cooper is Professor of Literature and Film in the English Department at San Diego Mesa College, USA. His first book, Between Tradition and Modernity: The Cinema of Satyajit Ray was published by Cambridge University Press in 2000. His essays on Indian cinema have appeared in Film Quarterly (Berkeley), East-West Film Journal (Hawaii), The Journal of Commonwealth and Post-Colonial Studies (Georgia), Women s Studies (Claremont), The Toronto South Asian Review (Canada), Asian Cinema (Pennsylvania) and in the anthology Colonialism and Nationalism in Asian Cinema (Indiana). He has also been published widely as a poet and short fiction writer.
