This book provides a comprehensive overview of developments in the field of holographic entanglement entropy. Within the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, it is shown how quantum entanglement is computed by the area of certain extremal surfaces. This book focuses on AdS3/CFT2, addressing different aspects of this correspondence in field theory and in gravity, including entanglement entropy, higher genus partition function, and conformal block. Holographic entanglement entropy is an important area in holographic and quantum information, which implies a deep relation between geometry and quantum entanglement. In this book, the authors use holographic entanglement entropy as a tool to investigate AdS3/CFT2. They study the entanglement entropy at high temperature in field theory and in holographics, and show that the results match each other in classical and one-loop order. Recent decades have revealed many interesting links between quantum gauge theories, statistical mechanics, and graviation. Entanglement entropy, especially in the context of Gauge/Gravity Duality, has emerged as a useful probe of these relations. In this thesis, we will compute the entanglement entropy in some special cases and assess the results in the context of more general issues. In particular we have in mind spacetimes with boundary and the effect non-conformal boundary physics has on entanglement entropy when the theory would otherwise be conformally invarient. Spacetime boundaries with canonical Neuman or Dirichlet conditions preserve conformal invarience, but "mixed" boundary conditions which interpolate linearly between them can break conformal symmetry and generate interesting Renormalization Group flows even when a theory is free, providing soluble models with nontrivial scale dependence. We compute the (Rindler) entanglement entropy for a free scalar field with mixed boundary conditions in half Minkowski space and in Anti-de Sitter space. In the latter case we also compute an additional geometric contribution, which according to a recent proposal then collectively give the 1/N corrections to the entanglement entropy of the conformal field theory dual. We obtain some exact results in both cases which illustrate monotonic interpolation between ultraviolet and infrared fixed points. This is consistent with recent work on the irreversibility of renormalization group, allowing some assessment of the aforementioned proposal for holographic entanglement entropy and suggesting a generalization of the g-theorem for boundary conformal field theory
