The name Holsen changed over the years. When Johann Heinrich Friedrich was born 12/31/1803 it was Holste. His Father Johann Gottlieb Holste was a Trooper in the 2nd Regiment of the Kingdom of Hanover. Johann Heinrich married Sophie Dorothea Bode April 24, 1829. The record shows both his name and that of his Father--who had died recently--HOLZE. On the passenger manifest of the BARK KEPLER, on which they arrived in New Orleans November 30, 1849 the spelling was HOLTZ. (Herman Heinrich and Carl August were not on the Bark Kepler, they had come over earlier and were living with their Maternal Grandparents Georgi and Hannah Boden.) On the census of 1850 in Lawrence County, Illinois the spelling is HOLTSEN.It is evident that the Father and Mother of our GreatGrandmother Sophie Dorothea, Georg Hermann Bode and his wife Eleonore Conradine Rubenack Bode, came to Lukin Township, from Stolzenau years before 1849. The 1850 Census shows they owned real estate valued at $400. Name and age on the census Georg H. Boden age 70, and Hannah Boden age 66.Of the 42 people on the census sheet I have before me, 29 were German born, or children of German born parents. Families BODEN, STARKMAN, HOLTSEN, APPLEGATE and WETSELL. Value of real estate owned ran from nothing to $500. At that time land sold for $1 per acre or less in the area. This data by PJHI.

This book is about HOLDEN on to your family history. It is not a typical type of book. It begins with the Great-grandfather and works it way down thru the children. This is a family history from the perspective of a granddaughter. Since 1992, I have been working on my family genealogy and talked about publishing my manuscript. I procrastinated and over the years I saw several books published that mentioned my family in them. Finally I decided to have my manuscript published so that those who were already familiar with my family could actually read short stories and some history about my family and not just focus on music as well as share the uniqueness of my family with anyone. Briefly, I come from a family of musicians: 1. Granddaughter of Oscar Holden - Patriarch of Seattle - http://www.amazon.com/Jackson-Street-After-Hours-Seattle/dp/0912365927/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242151327&sr=8-1 2. Daughter of Dave L. Holden, Sr. - Musician around Seattle - http://historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&file_id=2562 3. Sister of David L. Holden, Jr. - Musician around Seattle (currently play in the band GruvBox) - http://www.gruvbox.com 4. Niece of Ron Holden - Hit song in 1960 called: ´Love you so´ - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Holden 5. Niece of Jimmy Holden - Musician around Seattle - http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=450105699 6. Sister of Darrelle Holden – Background singer for Tom Jones - http://tomjonesinternational.com/toms-music/behind-the-scenes/backup-singers 7. Cousin of MarJean Holden - http://marjeanholden.com There have been several books that have mentioned my family in them and on the front cover of ‘Jackson Street After Hours’ is my grandfather because he has been called: ´The Patriarch of Seattle´, the one that brought jazz to Seattle. The following are a few named books that mention my grandfather, father and uncle: 1. The Fortunes of Jelly Roll Morton, New Orleans Creole and ‘Inventor of jazz’, Alan Lomax 2. Dead Man Blues Jelly Roll Morton Way out West, Phil Pastras 3. The Lost History of Jazz in Canada (1914-1949) Such Melodious Racket, Mark Miller 4. The Roots of Jazz in Seattle - Jackson Street After Hours, Paul de Barros (grandfather on cover of book)

Open At The Close written by Cecilia Konchar Farr and has been published by Univ. Press of Mississippi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-23 with Literary Criticism categories.

Contributions by Lauren R. Carmacci, Keridiana Chez, Kate Glassman, John Granger, Marie Schilling Grogan, Beatrice Groves, Tolonda Henderson, Nusaiba Imady, Cecilia Konchar Farr, Juliana Valadão Lopes, Amy Mars, Christina Phillips-Mattson, Patrick McCauley, Jennifer M. Reeher, Jonathan A. Rose, and Emily Strand Despite their decades-long, phenomenal success, the Harry Potter novels have attracted relatively little attention from literary critics and scholars. While popular books, articles, blogs, and fan sites for general readers proliferate, and while philosophers, historians, theologians, sociologists, psychologists, and even business professors have taken on book-length studies and edited essay collections about Harry Potter, literature scholars, outside of the children’s books community, have paid few serious visits to the Potterverse. Could it be that scholars are still reluctant to recognize popular novels, especially those with genre labels “children’s literature” or “fantasy,” as worthy subjects for academic study? This book challenges that oversight, assembling and foregrounding some of the best literary critical work by scholars trying to move the needle on these novels to reflect their importance to twenty-first-century literary culture. In Open at the Close, contributors consciously address Harry Potter primarily as a literary phenomenon rather than a cultural one. They interrogate the novels on many levels, from multiple perspectives, and with various conclusions, but they come together around the overarching question: What is it about these books? At their heart, what is it that makes the Harry Potter novels so exceptionally compelling, so irresistible to their readers, and so relevant in our time?

But what do they actually mean? Where do they come from? Why are some symbols so hotly contested? Does Australia have more than its fair share? Symbols of Australia offers illuminating and unexpected insights into the symbols that surround us: from Uluru to the Australian flag, the rainbow serpent to Holden cars, the democracy sausage to the Great Barrier Reef. Entertaining, provocative, informative, and often surprising, Symbols of Australia reveals a great deal about the ways nations are imagined – and how they imagine themselves. Just when we most need it, a lively reassessment of the symbols that define us and their commercial and political exploitation. A mixture of scholarly ease and irreverent playfulness that also defines us. – David Malouf, award-winning Australian writer If the nation is imagined, the business of creating its meaningful symbols gives us the very essence of its history. The star-studded cast of Symbols of Australia takes us on a fascinating tour among kangaroos and pavlovas, baggy green caps and rainbow serpents, Holden cars and vegemite jars – and much more besides. On this splendid journey across desert and beach, reef and harbour, city and bush, we see and hear the nation in its full dignity, diversity and dagginess. – Frank Bongiorno, Professor of History, Australian National University Humorous, insightful and profound, this book is a thought-provoking survey of twenty-eight of Australia’s best-known and most significant symbols. Entries range from Indigenous symbols that resonate with meaning, such as the Rainbow Serpent or Uluru, to animals and the natural world, official symbols, cultural practices, and commercial items of consumption. Most importantly, it showcases the agency of ordinary Australians and the role of popular culture in forging national identity. – Associate Professor Hsu-Ming Teo, Macquarie University Symbols of Australia, in this new revised edition, is essential reading for a sure-footed trek into our constant act of becoming ‘Australian’, sifting through the raging cacophony of opinions to distil the most pertinent elements … all while keeping a sense of humour firmly intact.– Miriam Corowa, journalist, presenter, producer and director This book is a fascinating look at the symbols that have been used to define and represent our nation. At a time when Australian identity is so contested, Symbols of Australia provides invaluable insight and context, overturning long-held assumptions and rattling revered icons. Symbols of Australia will make you re-think who we are, and where we came from. Even better, it’s a bloody good read.– Monica Dux, writer, columnist and social commentator
