Der schon in den 70er Jahren einsetzende Untergang der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft hat wenig von dem ursprünglichen Konzept übrig gelassen. Unter dem Eindruck der enormen Kriegsverluste und der Notwendigkeiten des Wiederaufbaus entwickelt, war es jahrzehntelang die entscheidende Stütze des Wirtschaftswunders gewesen und mit ihm in aller Welt bewundert worden. Das Buch geht den verschiedenen Stationen des Untergangs und den Kräften nach, die dafür verantwortlich waren und - soweit sich der Prozeß fortsetzt - weiter sind. Heute unterscheidet sich Deutschland in sozialer Hinsicht nur noch wenig von den Führungsmächten der neoliberalen Entwicklung USA und Großbritannien. Jedenfalls hat Deutschland seinen einstigen sozialen Vorsprung vor den meisten Vergleichsländern weitgehend verloren und gegenüber anderen, vor allem den skandinavischen, erhebliche Rückstände aufgebaut. Das einstige Markenzeichen Deutschlands ist so zu einer Lebenslüge der Politik verkommen. Doch mit einigen hier dargestellten Schritten ließe sich das Meiste der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft zurückholen, je mehr Krisen uns das derzeitige System beschert, umso eher. Das Buch ist die auf den Stand 2015 aktualisierte, umfassend ergänzte und jetzt mit farbigen Grafiken angereicherte Überarbeitung von „Es war einmal eine Soziale Marktwirtschaft”.

Osborne wurde damit der erste der in der Folgezeit als "angry young man" bezeichneten Schriftsteller. Nach dem großen Erfolg des Stückes assoziierte man mit diesem journalistischen Schlagwort Schriftsteller, deren politische Ansichten radikal oder sogar anarchistisch waren und deren Werke sich durch Gesellschaftskritik auszeichneten und Themen wie soziale Entfremdung behandelten. Vor einem solchen Hintergrund passt der Titel zu diesem Buch. Es bewertet die letzten vierzig Jahre zunehmender neoliberaler Globalisierung der Märkte von Waren, Geldern und Arbeitskräften. Deutschland ist in dieser Zeit von einem der aufstiegsfreundlichsten und sozialsten Länder Westeuropas fast an deren negatives Ende gerutscht, weit weg jedenfalls von den skandinavischen Standards, denen es einst nahe war. Man darf sich nicht einreden lassen, dass es uns besser ginge als je zuvor und besser als überall anderswo. Ein solcher persönlicher und zeitgeschichtlicher Rückblick ist nur im Zorn möglich.

It stitches together a critical media policy ethnography, drawing on over a 100 formal interviews and informal conversations with policy actors from South Asia, in a bid to present a deliberative policy analysis of policymaking for community radio in the region. Drawing on Grounded Theory, the book fleshes out the Deliberative Policy Ecology Approach as an inclusive heuristic to study media policies.
