Not illustrated. 1883 edition. Excerpt: ...English Church." HOLY MEN. OF OLD. November Ist. FEAST OF ALL SAINTS. S early as the fourth century, there is evidence that the Eastern Church celebrated on the Octave of Whitsunday, a festival in commemoration of all the martys throughout the world. In the Western Church, the Feast of All Saints was not commonly observed before the ninth century, and the day then appointed was November ist. On this, the closing festival of her Christian year, the Church, after reckoning up her jewels, seems to say, "The time would fail us to tell of each saint individually, who from the beginning has fought the good fight, and kept the faith, and won the crown; look on them as one united whole, for that great "multitude which no man can number" are "all one in Christ Jesus." Patriarchs, prophets, apostles, martyrs--: unite their separate rays of light, and "declare the glory of God." To God alone be ascribed all their glory, for to God's grace each one owes his particular share of it. By God's grace, each one, sinner by nature, grew to be a saint, and to each of us poor exiles is the same grace offered, to enable us to follow them, as they followed the "King of Saints." The precepts to guide us to the Kingdom of Heaven are laid down in the Gospel for the week, and to encourage us in keeping them, S. Paul pictures to us "the cloud "of witnesses," who are watching, with loving eyes, our progress in the spiritual race, and assisting us by their examples and prayers. Of deep interest are we to them, for they, without us, "cannot be made perfect." When the Church militant has finished her warfare, then will that glorious vision be realised which was revealed to S. John, in Patmos, and...

The Voices Of The Saints written by Bert Ghezzi and has been published by Image this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-09-24 with Religion categories.

The inspiring stories of 365 holy men and women-from the best known to some of the most obscure-come to life in an engaging collection of biographical profiles, quotations from the saints themselves, meditations, and prayers. Voices of the Saints opens with an instruction from Saint Philip Neri: "The best preparation for prayer is to read the lives of the saints, not from mere curiosity, but quietly and with recollection a little at a time. And to pause whenever you feel your heart touched with devotion." With these words of faith and wisdom as his guiding principle, Bert Ghezzi presents the lives of such familiar and beloved saints as Saint Peter and Saint Catherine of Siena; Saint Jerome and Saint Thérèse of Lisieux; of humble, little-known figures like Felix of Nola, Pelagia the Penitent, and Leonard of Port Maurice; and of sainted men and women associated with a particular place, including Margaret of Scotland, Rose of Lima, Elizabeth Ann Seton, and Junípero Serra. In lively profiles written for contemporary readers, Ghezzi chronicles their journeys of faith and their contributions to the vitality of the Church. The voices of the saints resound throughout the book, in quotations drawn from their own writings, the works of biographers, and the recollections of witnesses. Readers can use Voices of the Saints in several different ways. Organized alphabetically, it serves as a helpful, easy-to-use dictionary. It also features a day-by-day numbering system, ideal for daily readings; notations at the end of each entry, enabling the exploration of the lives in historical order; an index that highlights particular themes (including the intriguing "Porcupine Saints"), and a calendar of saints' days. A fascinating look at disparate and unusual lives-each one a rich source of illumination, inspiration, encouragement, and motivation-along with prayers and meditations, Voices of the Saints is a valuable companion for members of Catholic, Episcopal, and other traditional churches, and an enlightening introduction to the saints for general readers.

Everyday Meditations written by John Henry Newman and has been published by Sophia Institute Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-15 with Religion categories.

Over the years, the brilliant and often voluminous scholarly writings of Bl. John Henry Newman (1801-1890), have drawn into the Church thousands more converts after him. In this more modest work, his Everyday Meditations, we encounter not Newman the intellectual but Newman the simple Christian, on his knees face-to-face with God. Confident that the Church teaches us rightly but knowing as well that each of us must walk closely with God — hearing His voice not only through the Church but in the depths of our own hearts — Newman here shows us how to look to Jesus and declare: I need you to teach me day by day, according to each day's opportunities and needs. Teach me . . . to sit at your feet and to hear your word. Give me that true wisdom which seeks your will by prayer and meditation. . . . Give me the discernment to know your voice from the voice of strangers, to rest upon it, and to seek it in the first place. This was Newman's greatest desire. It awakened in him ceaseless prayer, countless good works, a profound love of the sacraments, and the habit of daily meditation which strengthened his will, deepened his understanding, and enkindled in him an ever greater love of God. For those qualities, Pope Francis will canonize Newman on October 13, 2019. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that ongoing growth in sanctity is "an uninterrupted task for the whole Church." If in recent times yours has been interrupted (or merely slowed down), let it begin anew with this modest book. To help you discern God's voice daily, rest in it, and respond to it according to each day's opportunities and needs, we have here gathered fifty of Newman's most moving Christian meditations, each guaranteed to enkindle in your soul the very same kind of love they enkindled in his. As they nurtured Newman's daily acts of conversion and finally made him worthy of the title "Saint," so will they call you to daily acts of conversion and finally lead you, as they led Newman, "to bow down in awe before the depths of God's love."

If I Should Die Before I Live written by Richard Renwick Smyth and has been published by Chiron Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-24 with Religion categories.

A disquieting question persists: “What if I should die before I feel life is full?” It is deeply personal, hauntingly spiritual. It’s a challenge to re-visit beliefs and the dynamics of faith, love, hope. Exploration brings a fresh encounter: the human and spiritual elements of “self.” These are not contending identities; each supplies unique initiatives for life’s fullness. Both need nurturing; either can be ignored. Spiritual experience makes promise and mystery real; this enhances earthly achievements. These Meditations focus on spiritual vitality—especially for seniors. They reach beyond a biological birth-death time-frame. They touch on continuity beyond earth-time. God’s initiatives enrich the spiritual self—grace energizes faith. This generates and motivates people to offer acts of love. Love fosters grander character and perspective, wholesome relationships, healing for the heart-hungry/heart-broken. The outcome: a healthier self experiencing joy and peace—wholeness for life beyond death. Richard Smyth’s missionary service in India was designated “church development.” The Indian church prepared for autonomy, to assure continuity of American mission initiatives. “Development” involved identifying and implementing specific ministries. The challenge: match peoples’ needs with relevant opportunities. This affected worship/activity in local congregations as well as their outreach efforts. The goal: design culturally valid strategies, structures and services for the church’s mission, organization, workers. An emphasis was proper leadership and resources. He built up a multi-cultural congregation in one of New Delhi’s new suburban areas. This housed government, business and military personnel called to national offices. The congregation’s focus: build strong fellowship ties and initiate outreach services in the community. This pattern was used for nation-wide training programs by denominational and para-church groups. The last 15 years expanded the ministry to facilitate similar transitions by mission institutions in 14 Asia/Pacific nations. Richard and Sylvia Smyth retired in 1998; they reside in Asheville, North Carolina. Their family of 5 Indian children and spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren live in New Delhi, Manila, Dubai and Stockholm.

This book will uplift you spiritually in preparation for Christmas with 60 short Advent and Christmas meditations. Two meditations per day will provide you with stimulating spiritual preparation for Christmas over the 30 day period between Advent to Christmas. Advent is a time to slow our pace of life—to be open, to be welcome, to be still and gaze at the beauty before us: Almighty God, present, waiting in the womb of his chosen Mother. The Christmas season, likewise, is a time to rejoice in tranquil adoration before the simple Nativity scene. This book includes Archbishop Goodier’s meditations on this sacred time of Advent and Christmas awaken in us the powerful mystery of the Word made flesh. He guides us along—from the Old Testament prophesies to the pure Yes of Mary, from the stable birth to the daily life and growth of Jesus in Nazareth. These meditations enliven the Gospel stories in a way that enrich both our emotional and intellectual experience of the ultimate mystery of God’s Love for His people. The Most Rev. Alban Goodier (1869-1939) was a British-born Jesuit priest who served as archbishop of Bombay, India. During his thirty-five years as priest, he wrote over a dozen books on the spiritual life. He is best known for his poignant meditations on the life of Christ.
