A cross-cultural encyclopedia of the most significant holy people in history, examining why people in a wide range of religious traditions throughout the world have been regarded as divinely inspired. The first reference on the subject to span all the world's major religions, Holy People of the World: A Cross-Cultural Encyclopedia examines the impact of individuals who, through personal charisma and inspirational deeds, served both as glorious examples of human potential and as envoys for the divine. Holy People of the World contains nearly 1,100 biographical sketches of venerated men and women. Written by religious studies experts and historians, each article focuses on the basic question: How did this person come to be regarded as holy? In addition, the encyclopedia features 20 survey articles on views of holy people in the major religious traditions such as Islam, Buddhism, and African religions, as well as 64 comparative articles on aspects of holiness and veneration across cultures such as awakening and conversion experiences, heredity, gender, asceticism, and persecution. Whether exploring by religion, culture, or historic period, this extensively cross-referenced resource offers a wealth of insights into one of the most revealing—and least explored—common denominators of spiritual traditions.

Called to be Holy in the World presents an overview of the history of Christianity from Pentecost to the present. Written from a Lutheran perspective, this book introduces the reader to key Christian figures and movements as it encompasses a broad view of God's work in the world. The story after all is God's story. As His story it is centered in Christ's cross, but extends around the globe as Christians lived and continue to live out their particular vocations as holy people in the world. As a resource for students of all ages, this book surveys how Christianity confronted the world and how Christians tried to balance the challenges of living wholly and holy in the world. Historical information on various controversies provides background information for the volume on Christian doctrine in this series, Called by the Gospel. Organized in a unique style, each of the twenty-one chapters deals with one century of Christian history. Discussion questions and reading guides along with informative side bars provide additional educational resource and reference material for further study.

History Of The Triumphs Of Our Holy Faith Amongst The Most Barbarous And Fierce Peoples Of The New World written by AndrŽs PŽrez de Ribas and has been published by University of Arizona Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Religion categories.

Considered by historian Herbert E. Bolton to be one of the greatest books ever written in the West, AndrŽs PŽrez de Ribas's history of the Jesuit missions provides unusual insight into Spanish and Indian relations during the colonial period in Northern New Spain. First published in Madrid in 1645, it traces the history of the missions from 1591 to 1643 and includes letters from Jesuit annual reports and other correspondence, much of which has never been found or cataloged in historical archives. Daniel T. Reff, Maureen Ahern, and Richard K. Danford have now prepared the first complete, scholarly, and fully annotated edition of this important work in English. PŽrez de Ribas was the first permanent missionary to the Ahome, Zuaque, and Yaqui Indians. After fifteen years on the mission frontier he was recalled to Mexico City, where he held various posts, including Jesuit Provincial. Addressed to novitiates ignorant of the challenges they would face in the field, his Historia was a virtual textbook on missionary work in the New World. Also written to encourage ongoing support of the Jesuit missions, it reflected the author's deep grasp of what rhetorically soothed and moved Church and Crown officials. Perhaps of greatest interest to the modern reader are PŽrez de Ribas's often detailed comments on indigenous beliefs and practices. These firsthand observations provide a rich resource of ethnographic and historical data concerning everything from native subsistence, settlement patterns, and myths to the dynamics of Jesuit-Indian relations. The many cases of conversion that PŽrez de Ribas describes are especially rich in ethnographic data, clarifying the values and beliefs from which the Indians were "rescued." History of the Triumphs is a primary document of great importance, made more valuable here by an exceptionally fluid translation and painstaking annotations. It will be a standard reference for all engaged in research on New Spain and a captivating read for anyone interested in this chapter of American history.

What is a saint? A saint is a person who has become perfectly human. A saint is a person who has discovered reality and chosen to live by that. A saint is a person who subsists on a personal set of moral priorities. A saint is a person who denies the lies of the world and believes God. Stars in a Dark World tells the stories of people who have been recognized as having lived these qualities in their own lives and are acknowledged by their fellow Christians as holy people. Stars in a Dark World also tells the stories that lie behind most popular Christian liturgical celebrations.

A Holy People written by Marcel Poorthuis and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-05-01 with Religion categories.

A Holy People investigates the various ways in which Jews and Christians define their religious identity, people or community, as being holy. Keeping in mind that historical studies can offer food for thought regarding contemporary issues, the study offers a large collection of essays, relating to the biblical, patristic and medieval period and especially to the modern period. The obvious question of many in the modern world as to whether the attribute of the ‘holiness’ allows for acknowledgement of authentic religion outside the own religious community, deserves an honest answer and well-documented study: too easily the claim of holiness intertwines with claims of power, whether by rivalling groups within the religious community, by groups divided along gender lines, or on the level of territorial claims. It will be of special importance to scholars and general readers interested in an interdisciplinary approach to theology, rabbinics, history, political science, and much more.
