Excerpt from Holy Russia and Other Poems: Translated From the Russian To the Russian People Only by knowledge won through toil and pain, Through sympathy into the spirit wrought Of two great peoples, can their lives be brought To work together for that priceless gain, The rule of freedom in a world at peace, Wherein shall live and move, unfolding still Their noblest gifts and powers of mind and will, All nations and the clash of arms shall cease. Too little we have tried to know your mind; Have read and judged you ill, and some have deemed Your day's eclipse a night that will not end. God grant your hour of need new strength may find To win the great deliverance that you dreamed, And stand by England's side a trusted friend. This biography examines the long life of the traveller and author Stephen Graham. Graham walked across large parts of the Tsarist Empire in the years before 1917, describing his adventures in a series of books and articles that helped to shape attitudes towards Russia in Britain and the United States. In later years he travelled widely across Europe and North America, meeting some of the best known writers of the twentieth century, including H.G.Wells and Ernest Hemingway. Graham also wrote numerous novels and biographies that won him a wide readership on both sides of the Atlantic. This book traces Graham’s career as a world traveller, and provides a rich portrait of English, Russian and American literary life in the first half of the twentieth century. It also examines how many aspects of his life and writing coincide with contemporary concerns, including the development of New Age spirituality and the rise of environmental awareness. Beyond Holy Russia is based on extensive research in archives of private papers in Britain and the USA and on the many works of Graham himself. The author describes with admirable tact and clarity Graham’s heterodox and convoluted spiritual quest. The result is a fascinating portrait of a man who was for many years a significant literary figure on both sides of the Atlantic.

What if you could find all the answers to the problems of modern life in the wisdom of the past? We live in a strange time. Perpetually distracted and increasingly over-medicated, we still think we are in the most progressed people in history. But scratch the surface, and you’ll see that our world is like a house built on sand. We put much of our faith in science, even as more and more of the truths we equate with “scientific fact” come under scrutiny. The lack of repeatability of many experiments is a modern science’s dirty little secret. And much of what can be verified, it turns out, often merely confirms what history, literature, and religion have already taught us. And so, many people are turning to the past for comforting wisdom to inform the future. This book is an exploration of the rich folk culture of Russia’s past. From songs of lamentation at funerals to the rules for naming a prince, you’ll find a fascinating glimpse into a world that is alien on the surface, but familiar at its heart. Reading it in light of modern life, you can’t help but be astounded at how much wisdom the Russian folk gathered through centuries and millennia of passed time and experience. Who knows? Maybe the answers to some of your life’s pressing issues are found in the age-long traditions explored in A Window to the Russian Soul. Find out by buying A Window to the Russian Soul today!

The Religious Poetry Of Vladimir Solovyov written by Vladimir Sergeyevich Solovyov and has been published by Angelico Press/Semantron this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Literary Criticism categories.

Vladimir Solovyov (1853-1900) was one of the most remarkable figures of the 19th century. He was the most important Russian speculative thinker of that century, publishing major works on theoretical philosophy, the philosophy of religion, and ethics. He also wrote profound religious verse, much of which is translated into English here for the first time. Included are all of the short lyric poems; Three Meetings, an autobiographical poem of mystical visions; The White Lily, a comical-mystical play, a genre invented by Solovyov; and a ground-breaking essay (translated into English for the first time) on Solovyov's poetry by the eminent theologian Sergius Bulgakov. The most important poems are sophianic, in that they express a personal relation to Sophia, whom Solovyov encountered several times during his life. This book presents an aspect of Solovyov's work that most readers are unaware of; it enables us to watch a spiritual genius plumbing the depths of cosmic truth.
