El nombre y la figura de Cristo marcan a Iberoamérica. Los primeros españoles y portugueses que llegaron al Nuevo Mundo trajeron esta presencia de lo cristiano, en el siglo dieciséis. El Cristo de la península ibérica llegó tanto mediante la presencia y forma de vida de los conquistadores, como por la prédica de los misioneros que los acompañaron. Este libro fue escrito con la convicción de que hay una realidad histórica y social bien establecida que se puede describir como protestantismo latinoamericano, y que es posible trazar el mapa de un desarrollo teológico en el seno de ese protestantismo. La centralidad del tema cristológico se explica tanto por la herencia teológica recibida del protestantismo misionero como por la respuesta contextual a la realidad cultural y espiritual de América Latina, un continente nominalmente cristiano. Casi nadie se ha atrevido tampoco a negar la eficacia transformadora de su labor teológica, hecha de cara a los pobres y perseguidos y con la intención de que los desposeídos lleguen a tener vida, y vida en abundancia. Pero sí ha habido quienes han puesto en duda su ortodoxia, así como la ortopraxis desencadenada por su producción teológica. Este nuevo libro de Jon Sobrino es, hasta cierto punto, una respuesta a estos últimos, pero sin que la respuesta pierda nada de autencticidad liberadora. Trata de esclacecer equívocos, pero intenta también obligar a sus críticos a abrirse a nuevas riquezas del saber cristológico desconocidas u olvidadas por ellos. Dice de nuevo, aunque de forma más profunda y elaborada, que Jesús es Dios, pero añadiendo inmediatamente que el Dios verdadero es sólo el que se revela histórica y escandalosamente en Jesús y en los pobres, los cuales continúan su presencia. Sólo quien mantiene tensa y unitariamente esas dos afirmaciones es ortodoxo: y sólo quien historiza adecuadamente esa unidad, que va más allá de lo definido en Calcedonia, puede hacer vivo y eficaz entre los hombres de hoy al Jesús muerto por nuestros pecados y al Cristo resucitado para nuestra salvación. Jon Sobrino ha podido hacer esto porque vive y hace lo que piensa, y piensa lo que vive y hace el pueblo de Dios, que apenas tiene figura de hombre ni de pueblo, porque ha sido asaltado a la vuelta del camino por los poderosos de este mundo: y ha podido hacerlo porque vive y piensa en ese lugar privilegiado de manifestación histórica del Dios de Jesús que son las mayorías oprimidas del Tercer Mundo en marcha hacia la construcción del Reino de Dios. Strategic Culture(s) in Latin America elucidates why many state-actors in the Global South exhibit a remarkable degree of policy continuity in their external behavior despite structural incentives for change. This book contends that the theoretical notion of strategic culture is instructive to explain such a puzzle. It extends the application of strategic culture beyond the policy of nuclear deterrence among great powers into other equally strategic areas of policy, such as diplomacy, political economy, regional international institutions, legal norms, politico-military institutions, and different security agendas beyond war and peace, for example, the illicit drug-trade and peacekeeping missions. The overall contribution of this book is three-fold: first, it rescues, updates, and expands the original conceptual and theoretical dimensions of strategic culture. Second, it extrapolates further theoretical implications of the concept through its application to five policy domains in Latin America beyond the original application of the strategic culture perspective to nuclear weapons strategy among great powers in the 1970s. Third, it draws together the theoretical and policy implications of the strategic cultures in Latin America and identifies possible applications for other peripheral, non-great power policy areas and issues in the Global South. This book will be of interest to academics, graduate and undergraduate students, policy analysts, and practitioners of Latin American Studies, International Relations Theory and Security Studies.
